Update #1: I have been working with one of the local GSD rescues because we were interested in one of their dogs named Sandy. After working with the placement person there, she recommended NOT getting Sandy because she had a high prey drive, so not good for the cat. However, she did say that they got a new one in named Max that wasn't yet featured on the site. Max was abandoned by his owner and then attacked by a bunch of dogs and left for dead in a ditch about a month ago. She (the placement person) rescued him herself, and he has been with his foster mom ever since. She has a couple other fosters plus a cat, and Max is great around the cat. He has been getting medical treatment and he is all healed up now. The only major evidence of his attack is the tip of his ear. My son and I went to meet him on Sunday, and he is the sweetest dog! We just love him to death. He's about a 3yo white german shepherd. He had to be shaved at the vet after his attack, but his coat is growing in nicely. He's at the vet again today to get fixed, but we will be getting him this weekend. I cannot WAIT!!! Here's his Halloween picture: ------------------------------------------------ On Friday, we are moving into a bigger townhouse with a small yard. DS and I have been talking about getting a dog for a while, and we really like German Shepherds. I have filled out an application with our local GSD rescues so far. They have to check references and do a home visit, but in the meantime, I'd love to hear the pros/cons of owning one. I am already aware of the nickname "German Shedder" so I have a Roomba on my Christmas list Although my yard is small, I am a block away from an extensive hike&bike trail system, so we have plenty of room to go for walks. Also, we have a cat who rules the roost, so we are making sure that the dog we get matched with is cool with him. We are really excited about getting a new family member, but obviously we want to be prepared for the good and the bad.

I've never owned one, but we've met some really nice ones at the dog park. And earlier this year, a neighbor up the street got one. He is the sweetest, friendliest dog and our whole family loves him. He and our mutt-girl Riley have a real true-love thing going on. If he gets out of their yard, he heads straight for ours. He's the only dog Riley will let in our yard-they romp and play and they both grin like fools the whole time they're together. (They're both fixed-no danger there) Lots of times, when she's outside, she just sits and stares up the road at Bailey's with a look of longing.
eta: Oh, and yes-the SHEDDING. It's awful. We're pretty sure Riley is part shepherd, and she sheds something awful.

The shedding is insane. You will encounter people who are terrified of them. You may want to consider if you'll have homeowner's insurance issues. We once rec'd a request from our homeowner's requesting we identify if we owned any of the following breeds: Rottweiler, Doberman, GSD, "pit bull" of any stripe, etc. At the time we did have a GSD and I kept my fingers crossed and never returned the form. We never received a second request. This was 2002-2003. We lost our boy in 2004 so it was a moot point after that.
They can have significant allergy issues. We switched to a raw food diet with our GSD that cleared up his skin allergies.
Still, the short two years we had our beloved GSD, Max, were wonderful. He was a lovely boy who was devoted to me. He was the perfect hiking partner.

There are several GSD that walk the same trail we take with our dogs. They are all younger (under two) and are extremely curious about our dogs. They pull their owner's arms almost off. One guy has been training his for months to not pull when we go by. She has finally become trained to walk past dogs that come close to her. I love the breed, but I think they are awfully smart and can be difficult to train. I am sure you can find a trained one from a rescue. I would just make sure that you feel you can control the dog in different situations.

Most protective dog ever. Ha! Our GSD would defend us to the death from squirrels, but other people? Those are just more potential ball-throwers in his mind! FWIW, though, the 8 lb. cat totally bosses the 90 lb. dog in our house, so maybe that's how your situation will turn out too, OP.

Make sure to set your Roomba to run at least 2x a day. That will help. Brush on a regular basis, with a good brush. They don't require regular bathing. That I was told is a factor for allergies. Mine has never been bathed, but he's an indoor dog. They can be big lap dogs, be prepared for that. They will stay by your side no matter what or where you go in the house. Plan on having them sleeping in the same room as you, they will regardless Mine does his routine every night, he perimeters the house to make sure everyone is where they are supposed to be, when he's satisfied he'll come to bed. If my daughter is late getting home, he will not sleep in my room until she is in her room. If we have visitors, he will sleep out of my room but by the door, his choice. They are so protective & that is one quality I love about them. They tend to 'mouth' everything. Although it's not a bite, it can hurt because they have huge teeth. My guy is 10 years old now & he has cancer. He had a mass removed last summer & we are monitoring him. He's doing great & still going strong, but he is struggling with stairs & his joints tend to swell. Mine doesn't like big dogs, but he loves the little ones! He is deathly afraid of cats, will go out of his way to avoid them. He has a temperament that if I am calm and okay, then he is; if I'm nervous or afraid, he will be & god help you if attacked anyone in our family, I know he would defend until the end.

I saw a fun playful baby of dog smash through a glass door to defend a child who was getting a spanking from his dad. German shepards are to be respected. A more loyal dog you not find.

I have never had a GSD but my sister did, and I know many Rough Collie owners have both a RC and a GSD. They do take a lot of training so you will want to make sure you have access to a trainer if your rescue is not trained. And yes, some people are very scared of them so you will want to make sure you can control him/her on a leash. They can pull extremely hard in an instant. I recommend an easy walk harness. Our trainer has a GSD, and he wears a prong collar. She highly recommends them. I don't care for prong collars but in some instances, they can be great.

We have two Samoyeds and one German Shepherd Dog. They are nothing alike Our Samoyeds have always been pretty lazy (throw rugs), laid back and fairly stubborn when it came to training and/or focus. We applied to get a GSD through our state GSD rescue because dh has always wanted one. They denied us because we did not have prior GSD experience. I didn't understand that at the time since we'd had dogs for almost 10 yrs. After getting our GSD I did understand the difference between general dog ownership knowledge and ownership specific to GSDs Our GSD is 4 and a lovely girl. She has been our 17 yr olds 4-H dog. When we got her as a puppy we were told she was the dominate puppy in the litter. That didn't really mean much to us at the time. Remember we came from Samoyeds that love everyone and are more likely to lick you to death We were lucky that that first year we had her we had a wonderful obedience trainer that volunteered with our 4-H club. Like many GSDs, Nita had dog fear aggression and would lash out to other dogs. We worked really hard to overcome that. Our trainer passed away just after Nita turned 1 and that year was very hard on Nita and us without her knowledge and support. We were able to get her over her fear aggression and her tendency to guard me and our dd. GSD puppies are known as land sharks because they are very mouthy. They like to nip and put everything in their mouths. We were constantly putting a toy in her mouth. She learned to grab a toy herself every time she got excited They are also very smart, which is great for training, but that also means they get bored quickly. So our rule has been to keep her both mentally and physically stimulated to keep her out of trouble. We worked on obedience (sits and downs heeling, etc) for her mental state and then also did a lot of physical things with her like throwing the ball, agility, dd would jog with her. GSDs are a lot of work but very worth it. I wouldn't trade Nita in for anything, but at the same time, I would still rather get another Samoyed for myself.

So that is also something to think about.

Before the last and current PITA, I mean Aussies, (I love him, really. He's just like a third child who never grows up!) we had 2 German Shepherds. They were brothers and in their prime were both over 100 lbs but big babies. I think a lot is how they are raised, as with any dogs. Never bothered anyone. (except each other- they acted just like brothers!) The bigger one did stop a friend from entering the house once when we didn't hear him knock. The dog didn't jump or bite but just slowly and gently pushed his hand away from the doorknob. Friend said "yeah, Shadow, you're right, I'll wait." They do shed a lot. When I brushed them both in yard at one time it was unreal how much fur came off of them and I didn't think it could get any worse. Then I got the brilliant idea to get Aussies next. Smooth move, Aussies are even worse. Hair, hair, hair has been in my whole adult life. I'm smart like that. Some people fear German Shepherds just because of their size but I find the little dogs are more aggressive because of their size. The big guys don't have to be because, well, they're big.

I grew up with German Shepherd dogs. The best guard dogs ever. We lived on a farm, very rural. My brother had trained the last GSD & they had a great relationship.
My favorite dog, on the farm, was our Saint Bernard, so loving & loyal. Even with the non ending drooling.
