I will be visiting Edinburgh in December. DD is at the University of Edinburgh for first term. I expect that she will show me around some, and we will also go to Stirling and Glasgow.
Any tips regarding what to see and do?
Thanks!

Unless your daughter is picking you up, the tram from the airport is a great & inexpensive way to get into the city.
What to do? Spend some time in New Town (lunch at the Conan Doyle, shopping along George Street, more pubs along Rose). If the weather is favourable, check out Calton Hill or possibly Hollyrood Park (a bit more of a hike).
In Old Town, visit the tartan and whisky shops along the Royal Mile, go to the Haymarket and/or Grassmarket areas (look for the statue of Greyfriars Bobby), check out the National Museum and the Scottish National Gallery, and visit Edinburgh Castle.
ETA - if you want to plan any tours outside of the city, check out Rabbie's - we had a fantastic tour with them to Islay.

Edinburgh in December will be cold, dark and probably wet. But even then, it will still be beautiful. There is a wonderful European Christmas market in Princes Street (the main thoroughfare) and this year there will be also be a Scottish Market in George Street. I'll add more later, but I'm on my way out to collect DS!

Eat plenty of Scottish grub, Stovies, tablet, Shortbread and all the other fattening food wonders I can`t remember now `cos I`m drooling. Hope you have a lovely time in Scotland.

You could spend a whole day just walking up and down the Royal Mile with a guide book in hand, wandering down all the wee closes and popping in to the various museums along the way. The National Museum is incredible, and like most museums in Scotland, it's free. The art galleries are worth a look if they interest you. It could be very, very cold and very, very wet, I'd recommend long underwear and lots of layers. If you know and are interested in the story of Greyfriar's Bobby, his statue and the kirk are right next to the museum. If you like seeing oldy-wordy buildings, then the Georgian House on Charlotte Square is good. A look round Harvey Nicoll's and a coffee and a cake in their cafe is a wee treat. The Camera Obscura on the Royal Mile is a favourite with my teenagers and their pals.

Take the train at some point. It's a great way to see the country.
Also, take a guided (LIVE guide) tour of Edinburgh - the Green Line I think it's called? And also the haunted tour, the one that happens at night. Those guides are really entertaining!

I will be flying in and out of Glasgow, so I will get to take a train upon arrival. DD did say that she will come and meet me at the airport. I guess after 4 months she misses her Mom!
Thanks for suggesting Rabbie's. I had checked them out before, and was interested.
Coming from Canada, I am not too worried about the weather. It will be mild compared to the temperature at home!
I do want to go to the Christmas market. I will have to check into the Scottish market.
I am interested in art, architecture (old + new) and history. Also, I want to do a bit of shopping.

I would like to check out some bookstores. DD has already told me that I can't buy any furniture. I guess there are some nice antique shops, too!

Go tour the Yacht Brittania...it was so interesting. You really get an idea of how the queen and family live...she had a twin size bed. Prince Phillip had his own cabin again with a twin size bed...cabins were big enough for bigger beds. When Prince Charles took Diana on the honeymoon on the yacht, he moved in a new bed...just a full size one...too cheap for a king size. The dining room is set up with place settings for 75 guests!

We loved Edinburgh. I bought Fodor's guidebook before the trip and it helped me to figure out what I most wanted to see.
We also loved the food. Without exception, every meal we ate at every restaurant we visited was outstanding. Something we did not expect: your waiter will not bring your check until you flag them down and ask for it.
On Facebook, check out the Edinburgh Spotlight and Edinburgh Christmas Market pages.
