Yes, I realize all the British peas are likely fast asleep, but maybe they'll see this when they wake up. Why do the English give a word of Latin origin - Regina - an anglicized pronunciation? Particularly when it's so awkward sounding? All through this show I keep thinking for a split second that they've said "Elizabeth Vagina" because that's what it sounds like. Regeeeenah would be so much nicer. And that's how we pronounce it when we sing in Latin. I think you all should suggest it to the royal family.

Haha, this is near and dear to my heart as I just sang, Boito "Salve Regina" from Mefistofel for the local chamber choir. I have never been so happy to be done with a piece. Bring on Christmas music! jen

Yes, it definitely sounds like vagina every time they say it.
I'm only watching the show for Matt Smith, personally.

I was listening to a girl on the radio go on and on about people mispronouncing her name, which was Regina. I had to laugh because any Canadian would automatically say it to rhyme with vagina as the capital city of Saskatchewan is pronounced. It was only fairly recently that I realized some people pronounce it "Regeena".

It's my aunt's first name. It is Reh-JEEN-ah but we just call her Gina. It is also repeated in their family at least 5x.

Never heard anyone have it as a name, and only ever heard it pronounced to rhyme with vagina.
I'm two episodes in and I think it is fab. QE2 has changed the way she speaks pretty drastically over the years. In the early days, she sounded like a cat was being strangled in her throat, and I think the actress is going some way, but not far enough, to mimic that. It was a strange, strange way of speaking. Over the last few decades, she has sounded much less weird - I think there must have been some voice coaching to help her sound a little bit more normal. I can't wait to see more of Margaret's adventures.

Regina's a pretty common name around here, and every single Regina I have ever met pronounced it regeena. And many of them use Gina (geena) as a nickname for it. (I'm come across a few who went by Gia or Gigi also, but again, the nicknames were always based off of that "jee" pronunciation.) SaveSave

I admit I snickered too when they pronounced it Reg-EYE-na. I recently heard a joke about Regina, Saskatchewan. I've already watched the whole season and will watch it again. Matt Smith is great, but personally, John Lithgow is the best as Winston Churchill. I love that they filmed parts of the episodes at Chartwell. I wish that they had made his bedroom like the real one in Chartwell--but it would make your eyes bleed--it's covered in ivy wallpaper--even on the ceiling. The gardens and pond were gorgeous. When I went to France with my French teacher and mom when I was in college, we spent a few days in England. I wanted to see Stonehenge and London. My mom loves gardens, so my French teacher found us a private travel guide who took us on a day trip around Kent--I love painting and history, so going to Chartwell was fantastic--I LOVE Churchill. We also went to Penshurst because of the gardens. For Stonehenge, we took a tour bus that went to Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, and then Bath. Amazing. The tour was horrible. Horrible food at a "pub"--tinned clams on pasta and water if you didn't want the wine. The tour guide considered himself a comedian and wouldn't.shut.up. Even though we were literally telling him to SHUT UP. We went in '97--before they closed off Stonehenge, so we got to walk around it. Bath was gorgeous--the Roman Baths were amazing, and we got a chance to just walk by the river and shop. Then we took the Eurostar to Paris--my French teacher wanted to go through the newly opened Chunnel just as much as I did. I had her her last year as a teacher. She has a travel agency specializing in France--she spent a few years in Switzerland and then as a missionary in Chad as a teen. So she volunteered to be our personal guide as a fact finding trip. So much fun.

All depends on they type of Latin it is based on according to my beloved. Classic or Vulgar, and there are subdivisions of these too evidently including Ecclesiastical and Jesuitical.
That's all I know. He went on about pronouncing Cicero as Kikero.
I lost the will to live at that point.

english pronunciation is crazy. linkYes, yes it is www.i18nguy.com/chaos.htmlWhy? Just the way we learnt it. There are probably lots of words in English that are adopted from other languages but that we pronounce differently - like homage or terrain. Most of us didn't learn Latin per se ( ) so wouldn't know the 'correct' pronunciation. And in any case, vagina is also of Latin origin, so surely that should be va-jee-na too

Matt Smith is pretty hot. I'm taking my time. I just finished episode 4. I like it so far. But how much is made up - like did Margaret really stand behind the curtains and did her BIL find her purse there and comment on it?

Why do you all have such a problem with word vagina? Who said they had a problem with the word vagina? Used in the right context, it's a great word. Looking or hearing one word and constantly hearing or seeing it as vagina is a little different and, let's face it, I think most on here are having a bit of a laugh at how it (Regina/vagina) sounds.
