Can't stand to have a cat getting on my food area. Our cat has decided she wanted to use my place mat as her nest. I tried a couple of things, and she just laid on that (magazine/red pepper/books) However, I have discovered an empty plastic grocery bag is offensive to her.....so, 4-5 empty bags on the table, and the cat is off the table.  |

My cat covets the kitchen counter. I prepare food there and it's gross. Nothing I try works. I have to sanitize the counter every time I prep food. I'll have to try bags. My other cat covets my pillow. That is at least cuddly.

Red pepper sprinkled on the table worked for the previous cat.
The cat's nature to sniff an area taught that cat that it burned his nose and he learned to stay away from the table top.
I have been told that aluminum foil also works as the cat does not like the sound nor texture of walking across it. That was going to be next plan, some foil dedicated to the table, but these bags are a bit "easier."

I hate to think what my cat gets up to when I'm at work. I have discovered what looks like cat hair on the counter, so I'm sure she spends at least some time up there.

My two cats decided the counters and table were fair game when I got them as kittens. After a year of trying everything and being consistent, I finally broke down and got a scat mat. It worked beautifully! They are now 3 1/2 and I very rarely see evidence that they've been where they shouldn't be.

In my experience a cat either jumps on counters and tables or doesn't and there isn't much you can do about it. I have one jumper and one ground dweller. We are just in the habit of wiping up *before* we start cooking or eating.

Did you have to keep moving it around to different counters/kitchen table etc. or did once do the trick? Do you have to do "refresher courses" or was it a onetime fix? |

 I've given up trying to keep the cats off anything. We just clean the table and counters well before using them.

We only have one that likes to get on our dining room table, but we can't really do anything about it because we put him up there to give him his insulin shot while he's eating (then we put him down on the floor), so that would confuse the poor guy....no, you can't be there, yes, you can during your shot......so we are just in the habit of wiping our table down before we use it to eat.

But she didn't like to sleep in the plant; she liked to pee in it. Gross. We repotted it, put all new dirt in there, and covered the base completely with foil. She couldn't get in there and dig so she stopped using it as a backup litter box, thank FSM. |

Oh how I wish I could keep the cats of the table. And counters. And the top of the refrigerator. And the top of tge shelves. And the top of the tv. And...well, pretty much the everywheres. lol
Mine pretty much own all the places and just allow me to clean it for them.
One of mine likes very much to hang out on the top of a stack of old barrister cases and every time I walk by he swipes at my head with his Freddy Kruerger like talons of razor sharp doom.

We pretty much can't keep our cats off of anything- while we're home, they DO stay off the tables and counter, but I am fairly certain they will go anywhere and everywhere in the middle of the night or during the day when we're gone.
One of our cats has an uncanny ability to find a twist tie, ballpoint pen, bottle cap, etc. -- even though there is NO way she should know they're up there, we will still find things like that on the floor (or under the stove) in the morning, or when we come home from work.
I just wipe off the counter before I prepare food, wipe down the table before we use it, and we don't leave placemats out on the table-- we put them away till right when we get ready to eat.
(oh, and the plastic bag thing? our cats like plastic bags, unfortunately- one of them got her head stuck thru a bag handle, and took off through the ENTIRE house with it 'chasing' her... while it was hilarious to watch, cleaning up the pee (because she was so scared she peed herself) was NOT funny. Since then, we keep plastic bags out of their way. |

Our kitty used to jump on the counter, then on top of the fridge to finally get on top of the cabinets to walk around and observe life.
I'm a mean cat mom and I put a cookie sheet with WATER in it just beyond the edge of the counter where the cat couldn't see it from the floor....
Well, it happened when I wasn't home, and there was a bit of a water mess to clean up, but the kitty stays off of the counter now. LOL

That is the #1 reason that we do not have a cat! (second reason - I can smell a litter box as soon as I walk into a house where one is present. The litter itself, so it doesn't matter how clean the box itself is. I would also like credit for not referring to this as the #2 reason we don't have a cat!)  |

Our kitty liked to jump on the counters so we put packaging tape sticky side up on the counters. It took just once of landing on the stickiness for her to decide the counters weren't worth it.

Ha! I've had a good laugh at all of these! If I'm home and see it happen, I holler or flick water on them. They give me that "eat shit" look and get down. While we are gone all day? God only knows what happens. One evening I was hosting a book club and even bought a new table cloth for the occasion. The table looked so elegant. You guessed it...right during dinner my fat white cat jumped up on the table.

All of my cats are from the shelter where we volunteer. This shelter has cat rooms where about 8-10 cats live together. Three sides of each room have cabinets and a counter top, just like a kitchen. The cat beds are on the counter top, and some of the cabinets are just shelves where we've made cat bunk beds. So, of course, when cats come home with us, they're used to jumping on the counters to sleep! And I have one who tries to get into the cabinets when they're left open.
Once here though, most of the cats transition to finding a favorite spot in the house and no longer get on the counters. I have one that still loves to lounge on the counter. I know it's gross. I go through a lot of bleach spray.

I moved it around from the counters to the bar, and to the table. It took about 6 weeks I'd say. Easy peasy. It has 3 settings, I always had it on the lowest and never heard a peep out of them about it. Then we had to do some shorter (maybe week long) remedial training down the road, but I haven't had to have that thing out for a couple of years now. They're 3 1/2. I highly recommend it. |

Ugh. My MIL had a cat that loved being up on the kitchen counter. And she loved taking that cat to the lake cabin. Except the cat would get carsick in his carrier EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. And MIL wouldn't bathe it after she let it free from its puke/poop prison once she got there, claiming "cats are self cleaning" and let him go where ever he wanted to go, including all over on the counters and stovetop where food was prepped.  Oh, and the cat box was located in the kitchen too. Needless to say, DH and I bought a LOT of Clorox wipes every summer up right until his mom passed away and the cat was rehomed. |

I wish I could figure out a way to keep my cats off the table. They leave the counters alone for the most part but I can't keep them off the table. I have tried nearly every single trick listed here. I just make sure I am constantly cleaning my table.
