I had a job interview today, things went well. When I got home, I sent a thank you email and made a grammatical error (HR told me not to send a physical note because they are making a decision in the next couple of days) . I can't believe it, I am nit picky about these kinds of things. Do you think I knocked myself out of the running? I said "...valuable member or your team." Obviously, I meant to say of instead of or. I read the note multiple times, even out loud, but passed right by it, that is until the HR lady responded with thank you and it may as well have been in a bold red font for how obvious it was to me at that point. I am so upset with myself, I really need this job. Btw, this is for a secretary position, so grammar is important.

Oh dear! Well, there's nothing you can do about it now, but hopefully the person who read and responded skipped over it too.

If it's any consolation, I had to read your sentence 3 times before I worked out that you had typed "or" instead of "of". My brain read it the way that made sense. Hopefully they didn't notice!! At least you didn't write "a valuable member of you're team" !!!

Thank you, Peamac, I also hope they didn't notice. I even sent it to be proofread by someone else (prior to sending) and they missed the "or" too.
AussieMeg, I'm quite upset with myself, but had I written "you're", I would be furious with myself, LOL! The thing is, I am so into things being correct. I even told my girls when I first got them cell phones that they weren't ever to use "chat speak" and they, as well as I, send a second text to correct errors with a *. Really, what I did is quite ironic, Alanis Morrisette could add a new line to her song.

If you were the leading candidate, I don't think it would disqualify out as we all make typos and it wasn't a grammatical errors.
If it was a close decision, it might be the deciding factor.
Fingers crossed for you .

I would stress too, but really I don't think it's so bad. It's a typo, it happens.

If you were the perfect candidate otherwise, that would not stop me from hiring you. I had to read it a couple times to find the mistake anyway.

What's done is done - try not to worry. It's obviously a typo, which is much more forgivable than a grammar error or clear misspelling IMO. Of course, it's great when no one makes mistakes, but it's not the end of the world.
Like AussieMeg illustrated, those kinds of typos are frequently "corrected" by our brains when we're reading. It's possible they didn't even notice.
It's likely they'd already made the choice whether to not to hire you before they even received the email. I have a hard time imagining it would be a deciding factor for anyone hiring. I hire a lot of people and if I was already sure about someone based on their resume, experience, references, and interviews, an innocuous typo would not cause me to throw all that out.

Thank you so much everyone, I'm very upset with myself, but feel a bit better reading your responses. Thank you all for taking the time to cheer me up. I need a new job badly and this one is pretty excellent.

I send and receive hundreds of professional emails a week. It's super common and it wouldn't even touch my radar.
If you were the leader it won't disqualify your chance I wouldn't think.

I had to read it a few times to catch the misspelling. I think you'll be fine. Good luck.

I read your post so fast I didn't see the error until you pointed it out. Perhaps the HR person was the same. Or she gave you grace realizing you probably sent it quickly from your phone but it doesn't outweigh your qualifications and experience.
I know someone who brings thank you cards with him, writes them in the lobby after the interview, and leaves them with the receptionist.

I wouldn't stress. Like the others it took me a few times reading it to catch your error. In a former position I proofread our editor's articles too.

We once interviewed someone for an editor position. She said she was super detail-oriented and that nothing gets by her. And then she sent typed thank you letters with two typos. We didn't hire her based on the job. If it was anything but the editor position, I think we could have let it go.

I didn't notice it either first time I read it. I would imagine HR skimmed the e-mail the same as we've all done on this thread and didn't notice it. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

This would make me in knots, I would be inclined to send a note acknowledging it immediately.
It was helpful to read the responses - that probably isn't a good idea and would call attention to a mistake others over looked.
Good luck, I hope you get the job!

I would chalk that up to a typo. I am less forgiving of mistakes in your resume.
You mentioned that the HR lady responded. Could you ask her for the email address of the hiring manager so that you could send him/her an email directly? That would give you a chance to correct you mistake if the hiring manager did notice.

It was a typo not a grammar mistake. I wouldn't worry too much over it. I t would not sway me any in the hiring process. Good luck!

I doubt they would even notice that, but even if they did it's unlikely to alter their decision. If it did, would you want to work for those people anyway, where any tiny little error would be made into a catastrophe?

You didn't make a grammatical error. You made what anyone would recognize as a typo. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Thank you all for your replies, I appreciate each and every one. I also wanted to give you an update on the job situation ... I was offered the job!!! I'm so excited, this means I can stop using Covered California (my policy just had a large premium increase for 2017) and I'll have amazing benefits for not just me, but also my family. Funny thing is, I accepted this job and got a call for another one two days later! One is for the county, the other city, so the benefits are pretty awesome!
