Running out the door, but I've got this on my mind now that dd put it there, lol. She's mentioned a couple times over the last week that we should go to New York. I finally asked what she wanted to do or where she wanted to go.
She mentioned time square and some shopping. The conversation didn't go further, but now i'm starting to think about it....and wonder if it's something we might want to do. So what is there to do, what would you see? I feel like the peas maybe had nixed Times Square as their first choice so tell me some other choices.
Also it's within driving distance for me but obviously driving into the city in a big vehicle especially isn't wise i'm sure so where would you drive to get into the city. Figure since i'm out for awhile today and can't look into anything what better than some pea advice waiting for you when you return, lol.

I'd do it before thanksgiving-the touristy spots are INSANE between thanksgiving and christmas-especially times square and rockefeller center

I have less than zero interest in visiting NYC, but very much want to see the 9/11 Memorial. I hope to one day go for that and only that.

When we went, we saw the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, the rubble/construction for 9/11, Broadway's the Lion King, and SO much more. We loved it all, and want to go back, especially to see the completed memorial, and another Broadway show. They are AMAZING!

There's another thread going on about visiting NYC, although I don't think there's much shopping information. If you explain things like the age of your daughter, what she wants to shop for, and what $ type (budget, luxury, designer), you'll get better responses. Times Square is not a place to shop (well, maybe tacky souvenirs and M&Ms and crowded chain stores). It's a teeming mass of (tourist) humanity wandering around while trying not to bump into each other. And I imagine many of them are thinking, "Is that all there is?" But some people love it. ~AmeliaBloomer Times Square Hater

Add me to the Times Square haters. I live in NYC and the last time i had to be in that area was bar review. It was horrible. Just a teeming mass of humanity like someone said. It's pointless. There's really nothing to do but watch tourists try to dodge cabs. Blech. If you want shopping there's SoHo and Madison Avenue. Go to the park. Take a tour bus to Brooklyn and have Grimaldis brick oven. Avoid Times Square like the plague.

There's parking garages in the city, just depends if you feel like paying for it and sitting in traffic. NYC has all the same stores you have, in Times Square you can find Forever21, American Eagle, Aeropostale, GAP, and Sephora. Further out is a stand alone NYX store in Union Square as well as H&M and Old Navy. I personally don't like shopping in Times Square, I feel it's so crowded, if I walk around with a ton of bags it advertises I have money an I risk being pick-pocketed, I'm just paranoid about that. It's probably easy with everyone distracted on their phone.

Otherwise it's a teeming mass of tourists, chain stores and restaurants that you can find anywhere, and cheap tchochkes and souvenirs. Don't know when you're planning on going, but I love seeing the shop windows done for the Christmas season, the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is lit up in late November, and little Christmas markets spring up in various places like Grand Central, Bryant Park, and in the Village. I get sensory overload in the city, so I like to be able to duck into the Park for a calmer environment.

When I took the kids to NYC each had their own "must do" list and at the top of DD's was shopping in Times Square. She carefully shopped every one of the 6 floors at Forever 21 and a few other stores while DS and I people watched and hung out. I could visit NYC and never go to Times Square again but understand the draw to a teen and think everyone should visit once, preferably at night to get the full impact of the lights.
All the stores are going to be available to you locally but there is something about shopping in Times Square that was special for DD and she still wears one of the jackets bought on that trip regularly.
My one hard & fast rule whenever we travel is no chain restaurants unless they aren't available at home.

My dd LOVED times square. There is a Hershey's store there too that was pretty neat to buy souvenirs at. We waited for over 45 min. at Carlo's Bakery but was not worth it. Very over priced. Been there, done that now. We found one in little Italy that was even better.
I have been there twice, early December both times. Crowded, yes, but love the decorations and the holiday feel. Gorgeous!

If she's never been, a single walk through Times Square, looking at the lights, the huge advertising display, the TV screens, is something to do. Once is enough though. And the stores are mainly just larger versions of what's in any mall, carrying the same items in a large space (sometimes).
I do sometimes drive into NYC, but usually take mass transit. If you live within driving distance, you likely within a distance to take a train or a bus. Within the city, I take the subway. When I do drive in, I usually find parking a bit on the periphery (ie not in the midtown area between Penn Station and the Times Square area). You can search for parking in advance. But, with the cost of tolls and the cost of parking, the train works out cheaper for me!

my kids love times square too, especially at night, and my dd had a great time shopping at the forever 21 there. Take her to do all the other touristy stuff in the city too - my kids enjoy riding the gray line busses to see the city & get the tour & hop on/hop off options
and a broadway show is a must! my dd loved Wicked

I don't know if this interests you or your dd, but seeing The Rocketts (sp?) perform at Radio City Music Hall was a blast for us! (it's been a million years since my Dad took us, so I'm not sure if they still perform there?) Rockerfeller Center is SOOO pretty this time of year, as others said. The Christmas tree, other decorations, and ice skating. I've heard RAVES about a place called 'Serindipity' and their famous frozen hot chocolate. Our friends recently went, and they LOVED the famous 'Carnegie Deli ' ---best sandwiches they've EVER had. The 9-11 memorial would be a must-see for us, PLUS, a Broadway show for sure! Our friends just LOVED 'Wicked'. ------------------------------------------------------- AmeliaBloomer---I LOVE your avatar pik tonight !!! Too cute!!

We visited NyC last year. Time Square is a sight to see especially at night. The best part is all the people dressed up as movie characters like your at Disney or something. I definitely have no need to ever go back but I'm glad I got to see it. I would think there would be better shopping elsewhere in the city.
We actually stayed at a hotel in Hoboken & took the hotel shuttle over to the city everyday to avoid driving in the city.
