It's been a long day and the insurance company has is what is finally going to push me over the edge. Fireball here I come So 3 months ago I insured a car in dd's name (new driver.) The car was her brothers who is 2 years older. He got new car, she got his. They are both under 3 year drivers which is the same rate. He HAD a policy set to run from 4/16 - 4/17. I'm sitting here looking at the policies, identical except that she has 14% more in discounts (good student, mileage.) I ended up taking the collision off for a $600 savings and I'M STILL PAYING MORE. I call the actual insurer and they literally can't answer any question I have they've point blank said they have no idea, i'd have to ask the agent. The agent who has multiple policies for my husband's business plus 6 vehicle policies forget to email me or today can't get in the system for a specific question. Seriously! Guess I get to add shopping for new insurance to my weeks agenda Anyone have Liberty Mutual - goods/bads? A car dealer had mentioned them so i'm considering them. We haven't shopped insurance in a long time so will a different agent have a different price for same carrier? Is the rate set by the state?

I was under the impression that girls are cheaper to insure than boys? Is that no longer true?

We had LM for years. Couldn't touch their rates. But then about 2 years ago they went up. So we shopped and ended up with Hanover.
As for your question, a different agent won't have a different rate for the same carrier. I work for an insurance agent. We put the info into corporate's system and the rate comes back to us. There are some things the agent can try to do to help a little. But not much really since it comes from home office. States do have an impact on the rates. We have seen things go up and there really isn't an answer. Just happens w/state increases and such.

I was under the impression that girls are cheaper to insure than boys? Is that no longer true? It was for us. $92 a month for ds, $58 for dd. And that's after putting the van that they share with her as the primary driver. (Which she is--ds is 1,300 away at college.) They did discount him $36 a month as he is away at school 9 months out of the year, with no vehicle to drive.

Both had the same discounts (good student, etc.). We insure all family vehicles under the same policy for considerable savings. Our coverage is through Geico and they have been great to deal with over the phone (I don't go through an agent). SaveSave

Think it's time to shop around... The only thing that makes me pause is one of my older ones totaled a vehicle and the insurer was awesome. It was a 6 month old vehicle, not her fault, but they covered pretty much every penny.
I expected expensive and probably wouldn't be questioning too much but they are charging me a lot for the same darn car!!

I work in insurance and have seen a big jump in premiums in the last year or so. Believe it or not, those of us in the office often have no idea what all goes into the rates. It is determined by those much higher up in the company. I wish we had some control but other than making sure all discounts and appropriate coverages are on the policy, there isn't much we can do anymore.

I have found that other than State Farm (really expensive), it has been a wash for us.
At the time we had four drivers (two in early 20s), five cars, two homes, umbrella.
So if home insurance is cheaper, then car is more expensive or umbrella is really expensive.
But you can't buy, for instance, Geico for car and Liberty for homeowners because you get a discount for multiple types from the same company.
It was beyond frustrating because a couple years ago I was on a mission to lower our insurance.
I couldn't find a combination that would work for us.
But maybe it's just because of our combination of things. Maybe yours will work, it doesn't hurt to try!

Are the types of cars they are driving the same (i.e. Sports car vs SUV, etc)? IAlso, check to see if one of their policies has the charge for uninsured motorists included in the premium.

We have had State Farm for 20+ years. No other company can touch our rates bc they provide us discounts for car, house, accident free and longevity of our policy. I would love to lower my rates, who doesn't want to save money, but it's just not possible for us. Dd will be driving eventually so that should be a fun additional expense

Even a 4 cyl vs. a 6 cyl could impact rates. (I worked in the rating department for an insurance company many moons ago) Double check vehicle rating information, driver rating information, location of vehicle, use of vehicle. It really could be anything.

I will add that even knowing what to look for, it's sometimes very difficult to spot. I recently spent a few weeks fighting with USAA because they insisted that I lived in Fulton County because their computers and my zip code told them that I did. I live in a new apartment complex, so even trying to pull property tax records was difficult. I told them that if there was a fire, it would be Forsyth County units coming to put the fire out...NOT Fulton County. The school bus that comes to pick up the kids says Forsyth County on the side. I guarantee you that FOrsyth County would not be educating children living in Fulton County.
So even though I knew what to look for, it wasn't easy to spot but I eventually prevailed and now my renters policy and my auto policy is being rated as Forsyth County as it should be.

We have been with Farm Bureau for over 30 years and have yet to find cheaper insurance anywhere. Agents will tell us that bring our policy and they can beat it then they see what we have and they say umm.... sorry. You don't have to be in Ag anymore or in ranching or farming to get it. We have always had great agents and local offices for us to visit for personal service. He even comes out to us when need be.

The car is the same actual car. Which of course is why I can see the difference in the cost of the insurance, I have the coverage selection plans in front of me - exactly the same. The car - exactly the same. The drivers are different, but both under 3 years, which I've clarified with my agent is the same rate. So I just do not get why by transferring the car to her name they want to charge me more? Going to try another company who I believe directly sells their policies...maybe at least they can explain to me why they do what they do. More than the money is the lack of answers at this point.

Just spent an hour on the phone with another carrier who sells their own, no middleman agent. Answered all my questions, quoted me a new price and raised some of her limits. All the while saving me in the neighborhood of $500 for the year. I am a happy camper!

When I came here two years ago to complain how high the rate was, that was pretty normal. We live in northern Virginia in a densely populated area. Both kids have good student discounts, the van they drive is a 2005, and we have USAA with multiple policies and have been members for almost 30 years. All that does help. And I still pay $56 a month for DS, who drive once over Christmas last year, not at all at spring break, and then 3 months of the summer. But the truth is that teens are expensive to insure. DS was t-boned this summer by a 16 year old girl who pulled out 10 feet in front of him and attempted to cross 5 lanes of traffic to make a left, saying that, "The lady waved me in." Never mind that DS was in the lane closest to the other driver, it was FIVE lanes of traffic, and the speed there is 45 mph. Thankfully, she was deemed 100% at fault, was cited for reckless driving and failure to yield, and DS's rates didn't go up. But you know there's a little flag on his account. And it was $2,100 to fix the van (luckily the other driver had insurance.)

He has never had an accident or a ticket.
