Here's the crux of it: One thing this election has made me do is really study the process. From Primary to Election night, I've learned more about how our country functions (or malfunctions ) during the transition of power then I ever did when I was in school. The Electoral College had always tripped me up a bit. Didn't make sense to me, much in the same way Super Delegates don't make sense to me. Only time and examination will tell if it's time for the Electoral College to be disbanded or not. That said...

And that is exactly what I think is wrong with the electoral college- the winner take all approach in almost every state.

Perhaps more people would get out and vote if they knew their vote counted in the solid red or blue states. I am sure there are some big complications with getting rid of the electoral college vote or they would have done it years ago.

The electoral college effectively shifts voting power from individuals to states. Last I checked, it was "We the people" and not "We the states." That in a nutshell is why I would abolish the electoral college.

We the people are a Republic, not a Democracy. We vote for electors. It is a misconception that we vote for the individual president.

It's not an inherent problem with the EC. So petition your state legislators. You're right. But I live in the Deep South in a state that almost always goes one way. They won't even budge on early voting (I believe they do this because it keeps voter turnout lower). Still, I try and I will keep on trying. I know that states' rights are very important, but honestly, in nationwide/Federal elections, I wish that things were uniform across the country.

I know that states' rights are very important, but honestly, in nationwide/Federal elections, I wish that things were uniform across the country. I want each state to retain its individuality. Change needs to come from within different states. If one local group could gain momentum in a smaller state so that it becomes an actual issue within that state, the way that state determines the distribution of their electoral vote could be redetermined. Residents of other states could use that as precedence to make it an issue in their states so that they too could vote on redetermining the allocation of their electoral votes. It would take a lot of time and effort, but any changes made that way would be far more lasting than if there were a federal mandate for all states to conform to a new federal regulation.

I think the Electoral College was a brilliant idea for the time it created in. Now that we have two elections in recent times where a candidate who lost the popular vote lost the election, it's probably time for something to change though.
