No, we don't get anything. However, I agree with you. I think there should be some communication. I'm really tired of my kids have a half-assed learning because the teachers are missing so much time.

My kids' school has a weekly newsletter that is emailed out to parents. I'm sure there would be some sort of write-up about a teacher leaving. We did have one leave mid-year because she had a baby and it was in the newsletter. It's a small school and is pre-school through 8th grade.
My oldest daughter is in high school and they too would probably have some sort of write-up in their weekly newsletter. Again, it's a rather small school (about 600 students) and they really focus on family, it's not just a school but a family. They want the teachers, administrators, coaches and students to be a family. The school focuses on welcoming everyone to the school and to treat everyone with respect. It's a Franciscan high school. They would treat a departing teacher as if a family member was leaving. They would send him or her off with a warm good-bye and welcome a new sub or teacher.
If my kids were at big schools I wouldn't expect a notice or be surprised by no notice.

For 8th grade, no I wouldn't expect to hear anything. Because the kids are not with one teacher all day everyday at that point anymore. If it were for 5th or lower, then yes I would expect to be notified.

I think the school SHOULD communicate with the parents. I doubt they will

I have one kid who has graduated and one who is a senior this year, and my experience has been that you don't get communication from the school about this kind of stuff past elementary school unless there is some kind of special circumstance (such as the teacher dying, or maybe, like someone else mentioned, if there was an arrest).

My son's Year 6 teacher will be off for the next 4 weeks and she's only coming back for the last week of school. We got a note sent home to inform us.
I would not expect to get any communication about these things in high school (which is Year 7 - 12 in Australia). They might mention it in the electronic newsletter but they probably wouldn't send a note home with each student. I noticed a huge drop in the level of communication when my DD went from primary school to high school.
