Or an exercise program?
Example: I've been on a specific diet for three weeks. No weight loss. Should I move on to something else?
I've been doing strength training for 5 1/2 months. No weight loss, though I do feel stronger. I had decided to give it six months. Should I keep going?
ETA: I know muscle weight more than fat, but I don't feel like any of my fat has left.

I'll be following this. Been doing Atkins since March 1st and although I have lost 24 pounds, I haven't lost anything in the past 2 weeks.

For diet I would say 8 weeks. Have you lost inches?

No inches lost either. It stinks, because I've been soooo good and disciplined.

I gave those garcinia cambogia pills a month before calling it quits. If you are feeling stronger and have more energy, I'd keep on with the exercise routine and maybe visit your doctor for advice on a diet to add to it.
Have you made sure that you aren't eating too few calories and throwing yourself into starvation mode so that it's harder to lose weight?

I have lost a lot on Atkins. It's a diet that is pretty easy to follow. If I had the motivation and willpower I would do it too. 24 lbs is a LOT of weight to lose. If you have it, lift a 20 lb bag of flour or rice. You have lost MORE than that. That's the awesome part!

Muscle doesn't weigh more than fat...it is more dense than fat. Sorry that just drives me crazy! But back to your question...the diet you are following/ are you eating enough food? If you are strength training you need to eat the right amount of protein/carbs etc or else your body goes into starvation mode.

Needtimetoscrap - sorry I said it wrong, I know muscle is more dense than fat. I quickly added an ETA before someone said I was gaining muscle.
I'm not eating too little or too few calories. I have cut sugar, soooo I'm crabby! I eat lean protein, veggies, fruit, and very little carbs. I have one cheat drink per day, besides that only water.

I would give it at least a month. I need to go through at least one hormonal cycle to know whether things are working. If it's a particularly restrictive diet and I've seen no results, I'd quit after a month and move on to something else. If it's not particularly restrictive and I feel better and healthier, I'd probably stick with it another month. I'd keep up the exercise even if I didn't see weight loss. In my mind, exercise is different - I do that for my general health and well being, not to lose weight. If I lose weight in the process, it's a very happy side effect.

Honestly, I try not to try any "diet". I just consider it healthier eating. I've been doing the weight loss thing a long time - basically my whole life. I was an overweight kid, turned into an obese adult. I tried all kinds of diets and none worked. After I had my ds, 11 years ago, I decided I needed to make a change. 350 lbs was just not working for me anymore. I'm still a work in progress and working toward my ultimate goal but I've lost 130 lbs or so. Eat right and exercise. I try to make sure I have a 500 calorie deficit...if I'm supposed to be eating 1500 calories, then I try to eat around 1000. As long as I eat healthy stuff, regularly exercise and keep that deficit, then I can on average lose around 1 lb a week or every 2 weeks.
That said, it's hard. You HAVE to be committed to it. At least, I did. I'm sure it's a battle that I'll fight my entire life. I love food, I love to cook it and eat it. But as much as I love food, I love being able to do stuff with my kids that I would've never been able to do weighing 350 lbs. I recently went to a water park and then an amusement park and had NO fears about keeping up or being able to fit in rides.

Just like a cubic inch of lead weighs more than a cubic inch of olive oil. You can replace the same number of cubic inches of fat with cubic inches of muscle and gain weight. Or replace a number of cubic inches of fat with fewer cubic inches of muscle and lose inches but stay the same weight.

I did an Atkins type diet for 14 months. I saw my doctor and two nutritionists to set it up. They all swore it would "definitely" work.
I lost a total of 10 pounds -- all in the first 8 weeks, then nothing more. After losing NOTHING for a year of faithfully following it (and hating every minute of it), I decided it wasn't worth it.

Are you doing cardio along with your weight training? The best way to lose weight is to get your heart rate up for an extended period of time.

The first thing I would say is don't diet. Switch to a healthier way of eating consistently and make it a lifestyle change. You won't feel deprived and the weight will come off. I lost 80 lbs this way, but it took me close to three years.

Thanks for the advice. I do want this to be a lifestyle, not a diet. I just need to find a lifestyle that helps me lose a few and then maintain.
Sabrina- I am doing cardio. I've been doing couch25k. No weight loss with that either.
I keep adding new things to the mix hoping something will work.

Check out www.iifym.com and iifym women on fb, and track your diet awhile. You may be surprised by the amount of food you do need.

Are you logging your calories? If you log the next week you might discover why you're not losing lbs. In any case, do you have a back up plan? By quitting the diet, do you mean going back to bad eating habits? Or do you have a plan for your future life style? It might be worth a couple of minutes to form a post diet plan. As for the weight lifting, or any exercise program. You shouldn't stop that. That's for life Good luck with your weight loss journey. If you keep changing habits, it will klick, and the weight will come off

No a pound of bricks and a pound of feathers weigh the same...a pound. It just takes a lot more feathers than bricks to make up a pound. So a pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat, but there will be a lot more fat in the pound, which is why you can lose inches and gain muscle and still weigh the same as when you had the extra fat.
Which is why it is important to track inches lost and measurements not just wieghtloss.

Watching this thread, I've steadily gained since starting synthroid. I'll lose five then regain seven. I'm discouraged, and my dr keeps saying it's not due to synthroid

Which is why it is important to track inches lost and measurements not just wieghtloss. Wow! I am stunned that a pound of bricks and a pound of feathers weigh the same...a pound. Who wooda thunk? Oh yeah, everyone. Everyone knows that. Everyone also knows that a pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle. A pound of anything weighs the same as a pound of something else, that is completely obvious. When someone makes a statement that A weighs more than B, they are comparing the same volume of A to the same volume of B. That should be obvious, because only a total idiot would think a pound of one thing could weigh more or less than a pound of another thing. So the next time you hear someone say "muscle weighs more than fat", you should give the benefit of the doubt that the person speaking is not a total idiot and realize they are comparing the same volume of muscle to the same volume of fat. Watching this thread, I've steadily gained since starting synthroid. I'll lose five then regain seven. I'm discouraged, and my dr keeps saying it's not due to synthroid The Synthroid wouldn't be what is causing you to gain weight, but the thyroid deficiency it is treating would. Some people find that Synthroid doesn't help with the weight gain issue related to low thyroid as much as Armour (pig thyroid). You may want to ask your endocrinologist about switching or adding Armour.

OP, are you doing THM? Your description sounds like it. I started THM a couple weeks ago, slowly, trying to get the hang of it.

Do you have a pedometer like a Fitbit or any other kind? Keeping track of your steps really helped me. I am not good about it right now but will get back at it soon. Wear a pedometer (can be a cheap one you get at a sporting goods store) and try to get 10,000 steps in a day. I know for me 8000 is enough but for some people 10,000 is what is recommended for them. You will win this battle. You will. I have total faith in you and your commitment that it is going to happen Elannah

I don't believe in diets, but I don't think 3 weeks is long enough for change. How long do you think it took to gain the weight that you are trying to lose? Probably slowly over time right? I just want to encourage you to not give up and keep trying for that healthier lifestyle. It will probably all the sudden click and you will see the changes. Although, bodies are all different and what works for some may not work for others. If you seriously don't see or feel any improvements you may want to consult a doctor/trainer/nutritionist for help. Just keep trying!!
