I know I surely could use it after this week! Here's the beginning of a description: Hygge (“heu-gah”). The art of building sanctuary and community, of inviting closeness and paying attention to what makes us feel open hearted and alive. The Danish practice of HyggeI've already pulled a few extra blankets, pillows and throws for the living room. Been lighting more candles. Drinking more hot tea. Invited a group of friends over for dinner last night where we just enjoyed each others company.

Or "kos". Those words are interchangeable, and we use them in the rest of Scandinavia, too. I think it's the long, dark winters that makes us so obsessed with trying to make it "hyggelig" or "koselig".

I think I'm doing it this weekend. Having a girls weekend. Four of them are coming tonight and sleeping over. More are showing up tomorrow. There are differing views in the group, but this is a yearly thing and it's just about being together, being silly and having fun. Ages will range from 17 to 54.

I was just chatting the other day with my cousins Danish wife about this We decided that since she is in Australia now we need to come up with a word to describe the Australian summer feeling... long summery days ,beaches barbecues and long late nights with friends ,hot dry light filled days ,drinks with ice, warm stone fruit and ice cream We decided it was similar to hygge but in a hot light way.....!

This sounds like what I want for my family for December. Closeness, comfort, enjoying simple times with others.

I'd love to hear how we all practice Hygge or Kos or the new Australian version!
Tonight I'm shamelessly watching a Hallmark Christmas movie while wrapped in blankets with loads of fluffy pillows and it is good medicine.

that sounds like a great idea. I am going to try it tomorrow. I got a beautiful Christmas throw by Lennox at Ross this weekend. I will use that ,but will have to turn the ac on because it is still in the 80's here.
The sleep over with all the girls sounds like so much fun.

Wellway, I've had both of those books in my shopping cart on Amazon! Seeing your suggestion, I went to check them again and the first one had dropped in price by $3. Its out of stock, but I ordered it anyway. Must be a lot of people needing some Hygge about now. Thanks for the prompting to order!

It's a little funny to see you can buy books about hygge, it is just something we do, and I am sure you do it to, you just don't know it 😄
