One of my kids left the garage freezer door open at my sister's last night. Everything was lost. Just got back from restocking it. Ugh. Ever happen to you?

My husband didn't totally close our freezer door once when I was out of town.

Ugh, what a pain. I'm sure you could have done without that.
It hasn't happened to us only because the fridge and freezer sections both have an alarm. If the door is not shut properly an alarm goes off to let us know. It goes off more than I like.

Look at the bright side, you can tease your child about this for years.

Not the same scenario but we recently replaced our main kitchen fridge and will soon replace our second fridge in the pantry ... the old fridges just sucked energy and we were paying through the nose ... now we have energy efficient so hopefully our monthly bill will reflect that

OMG yes I did that once when I was a teenager. My family didn't have a lot of money and I did this at the freezer in the basement where my poor mom had carefully stocked up on meat whenever it was on sale, plus frozen veggies from my dads garden. Please give your kid a hug for me, because I still feel bad when I think about it and I'm 50.

What a shame, but that was awfully good of you to replace the contents!

Oh no! I'm so sorry! That's a huge loss.
I haven't had it that bad but more than once, my total tightwad, but absentminded husband has taken things out of the freezer and set them on the W/D while looking for something else where he will forget them completely. Nothing like finding several pounds of ground beef stagnating a couple of days later!

It hasn't happened to us only because the fridge and freezer sections both have an alarm. If the door is not shut properly an alarm goes off to let us know. An alarm is a great idea. OP: Sorry that happened and you needed to replace all that food. But you definitely did the right thing replacing all of it.

We had to restock ours twice in the same year-the first time was due to Hurricane Ike and the second time was due to the power going out while we were on vacation. It was an expensive year!

My husband left it open once a few years ago, but thankfully I noticed before too much damage was done. But during Hurricane Matthew last month, we lost our entire freezer (upright in the garage) and fridge/freezer (in the kitchen) contents. We also needed our roof replaced, garage ceiling replaced and a leaking window repaired. Fun/stressful times at our house right now!

Nothing like finding several pounds of ground beef stagnating a couple of days later! Not the same, but my ex had once bought chicken breasts on the way home from work, planning on bbq-ing them (he hadn't told me of this plan and I made dinner, as usual). Well, when he arrived home, he forgot the chicken in the trunk. In Georgia. In August. I found it six days later when I needed to borrow his car. Reminds me of another gross food story about my ex. (Hope you don't mind the hijack) Have I ever told you about the time he helped me put away the groceries and I found the potatoes, now in liquid form, five or six weeks later, in the utility closet? Why would one put a bag of potatoes with the hot water heater? I have no idea.

I started having everyone lock the freezer after getting into it. It is pain in the rear but worth it. Jen

My sister had a pet pig for about a year, with the intention of growing it into a few nice dinners. So the pig gets old enough/big enough, and the pig is killed and butcher that my sister is friends with cut it up. I think the whole family received meat from this pig, but most of it was in my sister's freezer. Until her 4-year old unplugged the freezer. We never got a good explanation as to why the 4-year old would unplug anything, but, you know, she was 4.
So a year of fattening up the pig went to waste. But it's a funny story. And we did get to enjoy some of the meat.

Once many years ago. I'm now paranoid about double and triple checking the freezer door is actually shut.

I have. On my old freezer the door didn't shut well so you had to pay attention when you closed it. There were at least 2 times I had to replace all the food (and ice cream dammit) that wasn't all the way in the back.

This happened to us once and I think it was me that left it open. Luckily it was noticed before everything thawed out. Now we only have chest freezers. I actually left one of those open for hours once and everything was still frozen solid inside. I have many reasons to hate my chest freezers but there are a few reasons to love them.

Done it - we have an upright freezer and I had gotten something out, thought I had closed the door, but something was sticking out. That night I had felt some cool air in our bedroom. Ha, the next morning there was water on the floor and about half the contents was defrosting. I had to clean it out and cook quickly. I now push twice

Not quite the same, but some element in my refrigerator died while I was out of town just recently and what I came home to was so bad that I had to throw out every. single. thing in both my refrigerator and freezer-because the funk permeated into everything and effected the taste of even things you would have expected to be okay.
Although, I have to say, my fridge is cleaner than it has been in years. I had to use a toothbrush to clean in the little nooks and crannies to get all the funk out. lol

Awww man! That's a bummer!
But hey... I can cheer you up... bless my 16-yo son. Last month he broke two... not one... but TWO flat screen tvs in about a 30 minute time period. He was rearranging the loft (where the boys have a "gaming station" and fun room set up.
Ugh.

My dd had an apartment where the freezer door would sneak open if she wasn't careful. her SO had to replace food once when he didn't check to see if it was closed.

Ohh that's no fun! SO sorry! I've left a bag of groceries in the car. It had cheese and bacon in it! Maybe the smell would be okay but not down here in the heat!
