We have had a change of plans for spring break. We are now thinking of coming to SF.
Kids will be 12/17. Last week of March. I have read all the past threads I can pull up here for advice.
We will be doing all the regular painfully touristy things. I have learned we need to dress warm and be ready to be cold and then hot as we travel throughout the city. Car rental is not necessary. Book Alcatraz asap.
Few questions... -We need to stay at a Hyatt. Which one would be the most convenient for walking and public transit? Is Emeryville too much of a stretch? -Any off the beaten path things you feel are a must?
Any and all tips are greatly welcomed.

Yes, Emeryville is too much of a stretch. If it were me I would stay at the Hyatt on Union Square.

Which airport is best to get you closest to the action? You can go to SFO or Oakland. I usually buy the cheapest ticket. They are about the same distance to downtown San Francisco.

Don't stay in emeryville. I'd stay in the Hyatt on Stockton street or in fishermans wharf. For off the beaten path need to know more about they type of thing you like to do.... Could hike around angel island, could explore golden gate park, tons and tons of things

No one likes fishermans wharf but I think that area is more central and fun than embarcadero - embarcadero is so corporate but maybe that's just me. I agree that Stockton/ union square would be my first choice.

Thank you so much! Any insight on temperatures and packing for that time of year? It will more than likely be chilly but will be warmer than Jan or Feb. A lot depends on whether the sun is out or if it is windy. In other words, no way to know. Bring a little of everything and you should be covered. Since y'all like to hike I would say a trip to Muir Woods is a must.

a trip to muir woods.. hike through the presidio.. there is a shuttle that goes around and connects with the muni system.. I would take a 38 geary bus out towards the ocean.. get off at 5th ave and walk over to clement street and eat and shop. or out at 23rd and geary. or wander the inner sunset (around 9th and irving) next to museums in Golden Gate park. angel island is a wonderful place to wander around.. hike, take the bus, check out the immigration station. take the ferry to Tiburon, not sausalito. march could be raining or 80 degrees. likely windy. check out the historic ships, the museum mechanique. Lands end (new visitor center and hiking..) stay in sf. pm me if you want more local advice.. have lived in town 30 yrs(and used to work on Alcatraz). also..crissy field..rent bikes in fisherman's wharf and ride down the beach.. cable car museum, asian art museum, de young museum.. my favs. along with the Palace of the Legion of Honor museum. lots of concerts and plays to enjoy.
