I'm living in Germany right now, and I am looking for ways to document and preserve my memories. I don't have enough time to REALLY scrap since there are so many other things to do. I just got back from Budapest late last night and planning on a trip to the Christmas markets in France later this week so I never really have time to pull out all my goodies. :-) Not a bad problem to have, btw. I love the idea of a journal, and I would love some ideas of what y'all have used in the past. The PL app is great but BH and her other designers aren't really my style. I LOVE Rhonna Farrer, Teresa Collins and Heidi Swapp to give you an idea of my style. I use to spend HOURS creating pages (which I loved at the time), but I just don't have the time/energy for that anymore.
I haven't really scrapbooked in a long time. A few mini books here and there, but my motivation has been blech. I lived in Hawaii for several years and had the same problem...too much to do and not enough time to scrapbook. Hence, my pictures got away from me, and i never sat down to journal the photos and memories. I don't want my European memories relegated to "yea, I think I remember that." KWIM? Any thoughts or ideas would be most appreciated. ETA: I am terrible journaling! That is part of my problem. I HATE that part of the process but it is really the most important. I need to get better at it.

Maybe a travelers notebook is the thing for you! Lots of YouTube videos about journaling (they can be used for everything, so not all the videos you'll find will be relevant to you).

I'm a big believer in 'journal it now, scrap it later'. Even if you don't write long stories everyday, I think it would be helpful for you to at least capture the facts - who, where, why, etc and then jot down a sentence or so about how you're feeling each day (elated, adventurous, disappointed, etc) or one funny or insightful thought. That might be enough to spark the fuller story when you do get a chance to scrap the photos.

Have you tried the Day One app? You can add really quick journaling and a picture so that if you want to scrap the photo later, you can look back at your entry for context!

I find emails (that I send to family telling about my adventures) and facebook (captioning photos) to help with future journalling.

Oooo, that sounds intriguing. I'll go search for it, but do you have a link or a bit more info? Are they made especially for traveling?

I second the Day One app recommendation and the emails to friends and family too. Take loads of photographs, keep as much ephemera as you dare (!) and if it doesn't have a date/time/place on it, write that down somewhere now. Hadn't thought of FB - I'm not a great sharer - but that sounds a good way of keeping track too.
The most important thing is to have fun now! Definitely live your life now, record as much as you can when you can, make sense of it all later!!
The Travelers Notebooks are just a brand of notebook to write in - you could do the same thing in any plain notebook you find. If you're in Europe you can probably find the Rhodia or Clairfontaine brands, which have the most luscious paper, so smoooooth..... (and the ink doesn't seep through like it does in the Travelers books)

I'm on my iPad, so I don't know how to link from that one, but there are tons of it on Pinterest, Instagram and Facebook, too. Search either travelers notebook, Midori or fauxdori. The original one is just a plain leather cover where you put a couple of notebooks, but other makers offers TNs that hold so much more. They are used for planning, memory keeping, art journaling, school notes, home maintenance notes ......everything under the sun, actually.

Clairfontaine and Rhodia makes nice notebooks, but they're not as stuffable as a TN. If you use fountain pens, I recommend the Tomoe river paper (several insert makers on etsy offer the option and ship to Europe, I really, really like frasizzlemade). You can get inserts made from watercolor paper or mixed media paper (Yellow Paper House on etsy have these, and again, they ship to Europe).

I lived in London for 5 years in the 90s and kept several travel journals. And it was definitely worth it because all these years later, I'm finally scrapping the best photos from all the travelling I did around Europe. I also wrote letters home every week and my mother kept most of them - lots of details about people, places etc that I'd completely forgotten.
So my tip is to just record as much as you can so you can go back and scrap later. I'm not a huge journaler either, but enjoyed capturing what I was doing because it was all so new. Even if you make some bullet point notes I'm sure that will help with descriptions later. Enjoy all your traveling!

The paper in the original Midori TNs is just so poor, it drives me nuts and it's not always easy to get hold of an alternative (thanks for the suggestion btw). I am a notebook/journal junkie and there are just so many great alternatives.

An extra little thing you can do is to write postcards to yourself, recording the moment or day trip and mail them back home for your family to hold on to. You'll have really cool stamps, postmarks etc to add into your book. We do this when we vacation somewhere new and although we usually beat the postcard home, it's a fun way to remember our trip.

When I went to Europe I posted on facebook and then later printed up my comments along with the photos and I had my journalling for many things, plus the dates, places, etc.

I would get a small printer to be able to put 2x3 pics in your journal. I'd collect as much memorabilia as possible and put them in plastic bags labeled with the sites or the months. Is there an app that can turn your words into text? If you don't love to write, use that instead.

If you have an iphone you can voice email or voice text yourself with snippets of your day. So much quicker than typing or writing. Plus the email or text is time/date stamped.

There is another app that I recently saw in an article and called Collect. I know you said PL cards in the app are not your style, but you can purchase other cards and put them in your dropbox to use on your layouts. I like Just Jamiee's Stacked Pocket Cards - more "depth". Here's how to use them. Of course, the tutorial should work with any PL cards you like.

Thanks for the links for the pocket cards. I will check them out. I do like the PL idea, but most of the kits just don't float my boat.

Thanks Kymberlee for starting this interesting thread! We travel a lot and I'm always looking for new and different ways to record our stories, so ideas like those from LisaDV and @scifiscrapper are much appreciated. I am always encouraging the use of voice recorders on cellphones as part of my job, so quite how I never thought to record our travel stories like that is beyond me! (duh) I've not really got on well with the PL app, even though I keep my PL going whilst I'm travelling as well - I just take pre-prepared cards* for each destination and collect small ephemera in a mini concertina file so I can stuff pockets when I get home. * I create simple "list type" 3x4 cards in PSE before I go, ready to complete with the usual eating - drinking - watching - enjoying - noticing style boxes to complete. At least then I have a record of where we went!

I never journaled before I travelled, but when traveling, I write down a few notes at the end of each day: date, where we went, what we did, any highlights I found interesting, funny, or impressive in any way. Maybe the weather if it affected what we were doing. Just one tip about jounaling in a notebook: if you plan to use the journaling on a SB page later, journal on just one side of the page. Then you can glue it in later when you have photos. If you can find an ap where you can include both photos and basic journaling, that would be awesome. Especially if you have the option to print and scrap what you do on the ap later if you decide to traditionally scrapbook your adventures. Whatever you decide to do, Kymberlee, have a wonderful time!

I use a small moleskine lined journal. It's about the size of my hand and fits in my purse when needed. I'm living in Poland and Budapest was my favorite city until I went to Amsterdam last month

I am still primarily a paper scrapper; however, I have started doing some digital layouts using Photoshop Elements, Project Life App, and a couple of other apps called PicFrame and LetterGlow. I heard about "Phone Booking" (scrapbooking on your phone) from Steph when she was a guest on the Paperclipping Roundtable podcast. You can read about it on the Daily Digi.I buy digi kits and save the elements and paper I want to use in Drop Box. Then I use the supplies in my LetterGlow to make custom embellished title and journal cards. I can even include scanned memorabilia using the app Scannable. Once you save and export your LetterGlow card you can add it to PicFrame or Project Life just like a picture.
