Has anyone done a Pet DNA test? We adopted a puppy a few weeks ago and are considering it. We don't know his background at all. He looks like a mini lab. We think we can see some Jack Russell. Vet suggested maybe some Shiba Inu because of his coat. Here's a photo if you want to guess (and because I know the rules). His name is Tucker.

Oh my Word!! Is he adorable. I have no guesses other than the lab bit! I have a friend who did it and was happy with it. We are also talking about doing it as we don't know what our pup is, humane society said rough collie/lab mix, but we find that hard to believe. A lot of people say she has pit in her. It would be interesting to find out.

I haven't but if I had a mixed dog I would just because I love knowing things. Being involved with 4-H and training my own dog I also know that different breeds respond differently to different types of training methods. Our Samoyeds learn much differently then our German Shepherd Dog does. Which is another reason I would want to do it if I could

What a precious pup! Those eyes! As for the DNA testing, I've not done it but a friend did. She was upset because the test said that her purebred (ie expensive) yorkie was part maltese! DD is wanting to do it for her mixed breed, but I figure he's almost 9 years, what's the point now.

We've thought about it. Our dog is a rescue and the agency told us she's a Shih Tzu but it's doubtful she's a purebred. She's too big (tall and long), and her hair doesn't grow out straight but very curly. The vet says maybe some Lhasa Apso but I'm thinking some poodle.
However she is perfect for us and if/when we get another dog we'd like to get the same kind if possible. She's SO laid back, never barks (seriously like maybe every few months), doesn't shed much, doesn't destroy things and is a little love bug. That said she was trained when we got her so we didn't have to do the hard part!

What a cute pup!!
As far as DNA on a dog, I've never heard of doing that before and not sure I would - I guess his/her DNA wouldn't matter to me.

I agree with gmcwife1 ; if we had a mixed-breed puppy, it might be useful information to know, both in terms of how big the dog is going to get, and what its temperament is / how it would need to be trained. Plus, it would just be interesting!!
eta: and I totally forgot to say-- he is ADORABLE!!!
(I mean, if you think he's part Jack Russell terrier, be ready for tons of energy, right?!?! So it might be useful to know.)

It could completely change the way the dog is trained or the expectations of that training.

Tucker is adorable! I think with a mixed breed pup it could be interesting/useful to know a bit more. Let us know the results if you go ahead.

Tucker is a cutie!
While we were at dog training we met a family that did DNA on their puppy. The puppy was found in a bag that someone tossed out on a road-3 pups, one didn't survive-about 3 weeks old. They did because they wanted an idea of the approximate size to expect. This puppy was about a combination of 3 breeds and the dog trainer was able to point out aspects of each of the breeds which they could potentially have to deal with or on the flip side, training tricks that would make the most sense for that breed.

I just ran Tucker's DNA. His results came back as 100% adorable. No charge!
I think it would be interesting, go for it!

Your pup is adorable.
We did DNA testing on three of our dogs last year. I bought three tests, one for each of our dogs whose breed was in question. It doesn't matter to us but it was fun. Our Dixie, who looks like a 20 pound yorkie, is half yorkie and other half cow-dog and mutt. My daughter's "cow dog mix" turned out to be half rat-terrier/cow dog and half american staffordshire. It's good to know that she's half pit but she really doesn't look it unless you close one eye and look at her sideways. The other dog (our Tucker) was part rottie, part cow dog (I think) and I cant remember what else.
It was fun and interesting. We got a long description of the breeds that were found.
I think I am going to get a test for another daughter for her dog who is half chihuahua and half something else. We aren't sure what the daddy is.

First of all, Tucker is adorable. I rescued a shih tzu, so the rescue said, but he didn't look like my other shih tzu. Like someone said above, his legs were longer, his face not as smooshed. I thought part poodle as well. So I paid $70 for a DNA kit from Amazon. It came back shih tzu and 'other' possibly a Rhodesian Ridgeback? ? Wha? ? So I paid $70 to learn basically my dog was 90% shih tzu and 10% other. Well, hell, I could have told you that. The test results were actually interesting, so if you don't mind spending the money, go for it. Hopefully your results will be more informative than mine.

I did it recently for my rescue. She turned out to b. e mostly boxer ( that we knew). And Siberian husky..... Total surprise but it does explain her blue eye and brown eye and some of her behaviors. And someday it may be useful for her health. Contrary to popular belief, a mix is not always healthier than a purebred. a mix may have problems of many breeds.... Anyway, it was fun and interesting, although sometimes the results miss the mark

OMG, my daughter was just telling me that this is a thing! We were joking that if we DNA tested our Yorkie mix we might find out that she comes from a long line of royal dogs!

Thanks everyone! He is definitely a wonderful addition to our family.
The jack russel possibility definitely is scary! Our other dog was so mellow. I think we might do the test (Wisdom Panel) and open/look up the results for xmas. It would be a fun gift to Tucker from Santa!

We did it about 5 years ago for our beagle mix. He was from a humane society and we knew nothing about his parentage. We did it as a gift to our daughter, who loved getting the results back. He is at least half beagle, but has some chow in him which explains his fluffy tail and chest. Some of the rest of the results were a little odd. He showed some amount of greyhound. But its important to note that they only had 64 breeds in the mix that they test for. And greyhound was the only "hound" dog listed. Our dog came from rural Kentucky where there are any number of hound breeds and none of them were options in the test.
Nevertheless, it was fun, they got the beagle part right even though we didn't submit a photo, which makes me think it was somewhat legit. I don't remember the name of the test company.
