Have any Peas ever had jewelry melted down and recreated into something new? My Mom has been asking me what I would like for a graduation gift in May. When I graduated with my B.A. my parents designed a sapphire in a platinum setting for me. And I would love a diamond now, I have never had one, but I know that's too much to ask for. Then I remembered I have both sets of wedding rings that my Gramma and Poppa had. They eloped after knowing each other for 3 weeks and their first set was quite small. For their 50th anniversary, they bought much nicer sets. I've always loved the story of how they got married and would love to have their jewelry melted and redesigned to be able to wear myself. My Mom loves the idea. I have a style picked out. Ring It would be in yellow gold though. I would only need to add the small diamonds in the circle. Her solitaire and the gold from all four rings should be enough for the rest. I don't want the diamonds on the band. But will this just cost even more than buying a ring? Of course I won't have any idea of cost till I go to a few jewelers and get some quotes. BUt I'm wondering if it is even worth bothering. Any chance this wouldn't top $1000?

Stereotypically, custom jewelry does cost more than just buying "off the shelf". Here's the thing: the sentimentality of having your grandparents represented in your ring would make it worth the cost, wouldn't it? Only you can judge for sure, but I have never regretted splurging for custom design. I've done it several times and the results have been worth the (small) sacrifice. In your case, I don't know how much it would cost or if it's worth it, but I wish you well in making a decision.

Yes it would be worth it to me even if it's more. But since it will be a gift from my parents I want to watch the cost. If it's more than I'm comfortable asking of them I'll just do it for myself sometime in the future.

I honestly don't know. I had my diamond from my original engagement ring, my Mother's diamond from her wedding set and a new diamond mounted in a ring for me. I looked through the jeweler's book or ring designed and modified one of them. The jeweler was a friend of mine though, so while I know what the ring cost me, I have no idea if there was an upcharge. I was thrilled with the results and loved the ring. Even after my divorce, I would wear it on my right hand if I went out. Unfortunately someone stole it so I no longer have it.
I think it would be well worth the money to have the ring made. Check with a jeweler you trust or ask friends for recommendations for one. I would not go with a jeweler in the mall. Then again, I have a friend in the business so I have never had to. Good luck and congratulations.
