I've been buying from Penzeys for probably 20 yrs but I won't be anymore. Yesterday I asked them to stop sending catalogs and emails. I think I'll try Spicely.

I have never bought from them before but will make some holiday purchases this weekend for others. I wish more people would stand up and say "we don't support racism and misogyny and you shouldn't either," I read it out loud to my husband and we both thought it was great! I wish more people would stand up and say it! I agree! I also wish fewer people would stop trying to label or identify others. Penzeys email could have said "we don't support racism and misogyny and you shouldn't either," and been effective. Continuing to label all Trump supporters a certain way eventually wil be come a type of bigotry itself. Maybe it already has? It's not helping and causes many to tune out. I'll still shop Penzeys. I didn't vote for our future President. But I think people need to think about getting the message across, not causing another divide. I know many will disagree with me.

oh yvonne, thanks for the link to the savory spice shop. Do you have any favorites or must haves before I complete my order? TIA See my post above yours, lol. I honestly have too many to count, and I have been happy with all of them. The taco seasoning one is good, it actually has masa harina in it. Okay just checked my cupboard and here are more must haves Parmesan Pesto Sprinkle...omg on warm buttered or evoo'd pasta, sprinkled on French bread...on anything! Mexican Adobo seasoning, all in one, use this in my rice OLd Market seasoning, good all purpose blend MT Elbert, sprinkled on popcorn, on everything Siesta Key Spanish Sazon..ahhh so good, love this one

oh yvonne Thanks for the website recommendation. Options are always good. The email wont really affect my shopping there or not. It's his email to use as he sees fit - he will reap the consequences good and/or bad from what he says. Though I did not like the following paragraph, it doesn't speak to love, or unity or anything else he seems to want to speak to. It's seems to almost wish for further divide. Which is not going to be healthy. Also just how does one decide whom to treat poorly when ballots are private? "Whether any of us like it or not, for the next four years the 80% of this country who did not just vote for an openly racist candidate are going to treat you like you are the kind of person who would vote for an openly racist candidate."

Since variety is the spice of life there is also The Spice House link (sorry, I just had to say that). I've never minded the political stuff in Penzy's emails but this one just seemed so over the top.

Alright, Signed up with Savory Spice Shop! I see they have a store in Omaha, so I'll have to check that out! However, I still love Penzey's and will continue to buy spices there, too. And I love Penzey's recipes in their catalogs. I really love Savory, I think they really are a step above Penzeys. On my short list with them is the Roman Pepper seasoning. If you like Schilling Montreal Steak Seasoning, you'll really like the Roman. It has a nicer blend of spices, plus a touch of red pepper flakes that pushes it up a notch. It doesn't make your steak too spicy, just a tiny subtle kick. I buy it by the bagful. And then there is the Team Sweet Mammas BBQ chicken rub..ahhh, I could go on..lol Oh man, that Montreal seasoning is what my dad always made his own version of Chex mix with at Christmas every year! My sister and I try to copy it for the rest of our family, but never get it exactly right. Now I need to try this in it instead. Maybe it will be better! Thanks!

I had not heard of Penzys before this week, but placed an order today. Got some spices for stocking stuffers. We have a great butcher shop in town that has a lot of spices and specialty sauces. I always get my son a bottle or two of hot sauce with different names for his stocking My bil loved getting butt rub in his stocking, for his pork butts I can't read the email, I can't access Facebook at work so I can't comment on that. Thanks for the spice suggestions oh yvonne

I saw that too. I'll keep ordering from them because I have zero issues with how they see this. I get that others will not do business with them and that certainly is their right. He's sent out political emails before, so this wasn't a surprise. I'm a very new Penzey's customer/fan and I must say that I applaud them for publicly taking a stand, standing up for their beliefs, knowing that it will cost them business.

That's what got me, too. How is this not hate speech as well? I can't and won't support hate speech like this. Didn't vote for Trump, and won't shop at Penzys. Not that I ever did, but still. Lol

Yes to the above. I'm sure he realizes he has risked offending a good-sized segment of his customers. He's brave to keep speaking out. I don't entirely need anything at the moment, but I'll order this weekend, too. They're giving away a jar of cocoa powder with purchase. I'm easy. Good for him! I had never heard of him, but will check out the site. There was recently a thread, or perhaps two, about how fantastic Penzey's spices are. I made my first purchase as a results, and sicne then I have purchased some of their gift boxes for holiday gifting and hostess gifts - and there are always great coupons floating around for a free item or two, sometimes with as little at $10 spent. I'll def. be shopping with them more now!

I unsubscribed as well. I would have unsubscribed if Hillary had won. I just didn't like how he spoke to the voters. I realize he is a privately held company and can say whatever the heck he wants. However, I just want some spices and not his political opinion. Stacy I actually wish more companies would be clear where they stand on moral issues like racism. And not lip service because not many companies would stand up and say they support the racist appointments like those Trump is making. I would love to put my money towards people and companies who will stand up for what is moral. I wish more would take a stand against Trump and his racist nominations. AMEN!!!

I've purchased their boxed sets to use as Christmas gifts and they went over well. I love the frozen pizza seasoning and sandwich sprinkle. I got a free cocoa powder with an order last year - it is really good.
I don't think they'll lose much business over this because I think they'll pick up a new customer for everyone they lose.

Wow bravo to them for taking a stand for what's right! I've seen all the Penzey threads here lately and don't get the hype. It's overpriced spices that aren't anymore better than Trader Joe's $2 spices and yes I've tried them. Well actually I get that their appeal is all the combo spices with fun names. I'd rather have a cabinet full of single spices that I combine myself as I like to cook complex recipes from scratch.

If anyone knows of a good diy spice that tastes like Penzeys fox point seasoning please share. I've heard good things about trader Joe's spices. We don't have that store here though. We don't have whole foods either.

I wondered if/when someone was going to post that email!
I do kind of think he was a little over-the-top. I have no problem whatsoever with his bluntness, and in fact am kind of happy to see it. I'm even fine with calling people out along the lines of "If you voted for Trump, you may not be a racist. But because you voted for him, you really need to show it." But I agree, there's no need to TRY to alienate people. Expressing his views will certainly make some people upset, sugar coated or not. And this issue is one that I personally feel is super critical and needs to be out there. But you can still be clear and firm and respectful. I haven't quite decided if I feel like he lost that last part (respectful) or not.
At the same time, I do give him credit for having the guts to just put it out there. I'm sure he will lose customers; he may or may not gain any. And I respect those of you who choose not to patronize his business, too. Standing up for what you believe is important for all of us, and your wallet is one way to do this that can be very effective. For myself, well, I'm kind of disappointed that I have placed 2 orders over the last month and really don't need anything else!

Good for you sticking with your convictions...and good for them doing the same! I have never bought from them before but will make some holiday purchases this weekend for others. I wish more people would stand up and say "we don't support racism and misogyny and you shouldn't either," I read it out loud to my husband and we both thought it was great! What's happening in our country right now transcends politics, IMO. This is about human decency. Right vs. Wrong and Good vs. Evil. Not many things in life are truly black and white, but White Supremacy, National Registries based on religion, and normalizing even more kinds of bigotry are very clear cut issues for me. I'm honestly confused that they wouldn't be for every single American. Those things are not ok and I will not sit back and enable it by refusing to speak out against it. Off to make a Penzey's order because I appreciate them so much for speaking up

If anyone knows of a good diy spice that tastes like Penzeys fox point seasoning please share. I've heard good things about trader Joe's spices. We don't have that store here though. We don't have whole foods either. Trader Joe's, at least the local ones, has a very limited selection of herbs and spices. You really aren't missing anything besides low prices on maybe a dozen very basic seasonings. ETA they do carry a nice variety of different salts and peppers, though. Penzeys sent me a free Fox Point last time I ordered. If they do that again, I'll send it on to you if you like. At least you'll know they didn't make any money on it.

Try ordering from my favorite spice shop, Savory Spice shop, based in Colorado. I get ALL my spices from them, I think they are better than Penzeys ANd yeah, I'm kinda done being preached at by any business. I didn't vote for Trump, but this hits me the wrong way. Savory Spice ShopI drive to Napa for Savory Spice Shop Spices. The. California citrus spice is to die for!
