I've never ordered from them before, but I think I've just found a place to buy some gifts. I found their prices to be reasonable especially with free cocoa and free shipping. We sent grill boxes and another intro box with some of their blends to different family members who we don't typically see. They have plenty of stuff, so buying consumables works for me!

I will never understand why any business would risk alienating at least half of their potential customer base. First, I highly doubt they are alienating half their customer base. That would partially assume that their customer base is split 50/50 Trump supporters, or 50/50 Politically liberal/conservative. I don't think that is a valid assumption to make. Even if that was true, you are assuming that all their customers receive and read their emails. My mother and husband both love Penzeys and neither of them heard about the email as they are not on the mailing list and it isn't exactly wide spread national news. You are then assuming that if all their customers were split evenly and all customers heard about or read the email that half of them would feel strongly enough to boycott. I don't think Penzeys has anything to worry about. And actually, I like Penzeys better now and as evidenced by this board they have at least gained some new customers and had loyal customers make extra orders. ^^^ THAT. I love Penzey's spices (walking into their store just smells HEAVENLY, lol!!) and am not set up on their mailing list. The only place I heard about this issue is here, actually. So only some particular portion (we have no idea if it's half, even) of the clientele who even gets their e-mails will be offended by it-- that's a VERY small percentage of their actual potential customers.
It's a good time of year for them, because their variety / gift boxes make wonderful Christmas gifts!! If I want to shop, I should do it sooner rather than later, because the mall will just get more and more crowded.

They can believe whatever they want, but from a business perspective it is stupid unless you only want to sell your product or service to a certain segment of the population. Last time I checked, both liberals and conservatives like spices. I went into my Penzey's store this afternoon and it was packed, right here in super-conservative Texas. I think maybe some people are overestimating the damage this will do to their business. ETA: Kind of like all our liberal outrage hasn't hurt Chick Fil A one bit. Yep - and we're also looking at it from the perspective of a lot of socially astute women, which doesn't represent the whole population. Look at the anonymous surveys that were done here prior to the election. It was usually 3 or 4:1 pro-Hillary, which didn't translate to the election results. I've ordered from Penzey's once. But the only reason I've even heard of this email is from this board. I'd bet the majority of people have no idea this controversy is even going on. I thought the email was in poor taste, and I didn't vote for Trump. I don't need you (business owner) to try and shame me (general 'me' customer) on the reasons I voted for a candidate or how I can repent for my sins (which is how I read his email to make a donation). Just sell me cinnamon and make your own donations with the profit you made off of me. I also don't agree with the CFA owner guy either, but I even find that different (and I'm southern and not going to stop eating at Chick Fil A - I also know that while the owner may have views I don't agree with, they don't discriminate against anyone for employment, and they support a lot of community initiatives). But at least that guy was answering an interview question when he gave his beliefs. He didn't take it upon himself to email all of his customers directly.

I came back to this thread to share some of the other spice shops' names and links with my husband. Something new occurred to me. I don't participate on the political threads as a rule, but this thing struck me in a different way today. I agree that Penzy's owner has every right to send an email to his customers saying whatever he likes. I do feel, though, that his words are chilling and potentially marginalizing to some of his own employees. When you have a corporate culture that implies that everyone who works for that company is in lock-step with the CEO or owner, that makes employees with differing viewpoints feel marginalized. Some may cite Chick Fil-A as a similar situation, but I've never heard that Mr.Cathy ever discriminated against gays or sent out any type of scolding email. He simply expressed his own opinion. This whole thing kind of grates on my nerves. It just reminds me a little of "groupthink" and how easy it is to assume everyone does, or should think in one correct way. I do appreciate differing opinions on 2Ps. Generally I avoid controversial threads. I've changed my mind on many issues due to one pea or another sharing a well-reasoned opinion. But in this day and age of lots of talk about "marginalization", I think that can go both ways. In my opinion, it's best to be true to your principles but do it without offending.

This was from their latest email:
"And the results are in from Friday's Racism Update Email. You may remember this email was us re-sending our previous day's email. In it we kindly asked those who chose to cast their vote for an openly racist candidate for the President of the United States to take responsibility for their action. With the re-send we put the UNSUBSCRIBE BUTTON right up on top for those needing to use it. We also hoped they would one day come back. The final results are that 0.721% of those on our email list chose to opt-out. 99.27% of you are still here. As I said Tuesday, I love cooks. You are amazing people."

As I said from the beginning, Bill Penzey knows his market.

That guy is really full of himself, isn't he? Good Lord. He made his point (although he also didn't share his open, CTR, or bounce rate). I'd unsubscribe and check the "too many emails" reason, not the 'I voted for a racist candidate' box.

I got this email too, and I was impressed that so few unsubscribed, but then I wondered if it was just a function of how many people delete unread. I get tons of marketing emails daily, but if I'm not planning to shop today, I usually just delete everything without even opening them. The main reason I've read this whole string of emails was because I opened the first one to arrive after the election, specifically because I wanted to see Bill Penzey's response to the results. And then I kept opening/reading to see what came next. I could totally miss all the excitement by never opening a marketing email, and I can't be alone. That said, I will be ordering by tomorrow and enjoying my free shipping, free cocoa powder, and whatever else they decide to throw in. His politics and his manner don't bother me at all. Would probably feel differently if I were a Trump supporter, though.

I've never gotten newsletters from them. I read it on fb. So I didn't "unsubscribe" but I did ask them to remove me. I never got a reply confirming that they did.
