Oh my, what do y'all wear to jog outside in the winter? If I dress like a Michelin tire, I just can't run. But man, I don't know what to wear to keep warm. And my running shoes are that weave fabric on top, and the cold just goes right through them. I have to go out because I am jogging with the dogs. They have to get out or we are all unhappy. Any ideas on keeping warm while jogging in 20 degree weather? Thanks!

Winter running tights, smartwool socks, gloves, 3 layers on top - two tech material long sleeved shirts and then an under armor pullover. Neck warmer and hat too. Nothing is too bulky.

For feet, SmartWool running socks. They are not at all itchy and nothing keeps your feet comfortable like they do - other socks I have been known to actually overheat, but not these.
Bottoms, leggings. Thick, but not too thick. I don't generally wear the ones that say they are specifically for winter running because I find they get too warm. yes, my legs are a bit cold when I first step out of the house, but they get comfortable once I start moving. On top, three layers, thin, sleeveless base, quarter zip tech fabric, or when it gets colder thin quarter zip fleece, finally a thin vest. I wear a thin hat and thin gloves. As I heat up these wind up in the pockets of my vest.

Wool, wool, wool in layers. Smartwool, Ibex, Woolies all make different weight layers. Winters where I am aren't as harsh as yours, but we do go xc skiing, and layers using wool are best. Sporthill also makes several kinds of cold-stopping, wind-blocking clothing. Their 3sp stuff will keep you warm in one layer. For my head, I start off with an earband, but anything on my head, no matter the temp, will come off at some point, same for gloves. Happy jogging!

When it is freezing out make sure you keep your limbs covered ! Exposed, warm skin and frigid cold air don't mix. There are runner tights and shirts that are made just for cold weather running.

I don't run but I walk every day in winter. Fleece-lined workout tights, a wicking heat-retaining undershirt, a heavy sweatshirt that covers my butt, these awesome Champion running gloves I got last year at Target that are warm but lightweight and that "hinge" to become fingerless if I need to blow my nose or something, a scarf around my neck (if I ran I would use a cowl type of neck warmer) that I can loop/ unloop to regulate my temperature. Over all this I wear a wind proof fleece jacket and over that a fleece lined soft shell jacket and if it's REALLY cold, is layer a down vest over all that or just chuck everything and wear a down coat. Oh yeah, those ear muffs that go around the back of your head. I know you're supposed to wear a hat because of heat loss from your head but I can't stand tight hats on my head.

Great question!! I'm wanting to bike ride prior to the snow flying and need clothing. So, I'm going to watch this thread and see what people suggest!

Check out websites like Brooks, Asics, Saucony. They all have really great winter running gear. Also, as people have said upthread, layers are the key. Wear layers that you can shed as you get warm. Be prepared to spend a little bit of $$$ 'cuz winter running gear is pretty spend. Have fun! Winter running is so much better than summer running. Also, if it is really, really cold, you might want a balaclava to help warm the air as you breathe. I personally hate them, but I know many of my buddies love them for the winter.

I don't run. ICK!! but all my co-workers do, and do all winter in -20F below. It's all about thin layers. NOT wool. Most of them wear Under armor, and north face. There is a lot of winter running gear out there. It's spendy though.
