My heart hurts for all the children on the bus & the parents whose world just crumbled.
I can't imagine how in a single vehicle accident the bus ended up like that. I can't imagine speed not being a factor.

Wouldn't it help to have seat belts on school buses? We mandate them on airplanes but not school buses. Seems backwards.

I got a breaking news alert on my phone within 30 minutes of this happening, and have been following the story since. I'm extra emotional right now anyways, and find myself flat out crying for the victims, their families, and the first responders.
What force it took for the tree to split the bus in two like that. Speed had to have been a factor.
Let's not let this get into a discussion of seatbelts on buses. Many studies have been done. Many opinions are out there. Right now, let's just focus on what happened and continue to pray and send positive thoughts for all involved.

Oh lord how awful. Prayers for those families. Wouldn't it help to have seat belts on school buses? We mandate them on airplanes but not school buses. Seems backwards. those are state by state laws as it is required here in my state ( NJ )

Perhaps it's time for a Federal regulation. They are not mandated where I live.

I can't imagine speed not being a factor. I had the thought that his hydraulics could have gone out. That would explain the speed and lack of control.

Oh lord how awful. Prayers for those families. Wouldn't it help to have seat belts on school buses? We mandate them on airplanes but not school buses. Seems backwards. those are state by state laws as it is required here in my state ( NJ ) They are required in NY also. But from what was explained to us by the transportation director in our district years ago, there is mixed data on whether they are truly beneficial. He said that school busses are built to have a "compartment of safety " around the passengers. That's why the seat backs are high and padded . The real benefits of seatbelts aren't usually seen except in high speed crashes. My heart breaks for these families. Maria

I know we're all heartbroken for the families and the community, as we should be. Please also pray for the emergency responders. It doesn't matter how much experience and training you have, something like this is going to have a life-long impact.

Wouldn't it help to have seat belts on school buses? We mandate them on airplanes but not school buses. Seems backwards. Not when the bus is cut in half and is wrapped around a huge tree. And in California, my kids district now has belts on all buses. When needed 5pt harnesses and in chair car seats.

This came on the news as I opened this thread. How horribly sad. It seems the driver is responsible 😕 Prayers for the families and, yes, the first responders.

Yes, just saw that too, and the driver was just 24. They also interviewed a little boy that was on the bus. He said that the driver was driving very fast and that they hit a garbage bag and a mailbox first before hitting the tree. I have been praying all night since I got the breaking news last night. I can't imagine the parents' grief. I ache for them!

The driver error/arrest news is so upsetting. Makes it even harder to wrap my brain around, if that's even possible.

Does anyone else think 24 seems kind of young to be driving a bus full of school children? I can't explain why, but I was kind of surprised the driver was so young. Maybe because all we ever had were much older drivers when I was in school and that's sort of what I envision when I think of a school bus driver.

I think many places are always in need of drivers - I know the city nearest me is always advertising for them - so unfortunately there may not be many options.

This was horrible. It came on the news last night and SO and I just stopped what we were doing to watch. The picture was horrible and now this arrest because the driver did cause it all. Very tragic. Prayer to all the families and all of the responders, doctors and nurses.

So heartbreaking. As a mother of a kid who rides the bus home from school, this is my one of my worst nightmares Same here, especially since I drove my kids both ways for years and years. But eventually, the schedules became an issue and I couldn't be 2 places at once, so we switched them both to buses. I hear stories like this and my heart just clenches. I can only imagine the pain that the parents, families, & community are in. My heart goes out to them. Save
