Note: I'll call my doctor tomorrow but wanted to see what others knew.
A few weeks ago I started taking turmeric. I had spoken with my gyn about it in the past (he's also my gp) . I'm scheduled for carpal tunnel surgery in a week so I was planning to stop all supplements tonight even though they only said to avoid ibuprofen for the week before. I just looked up turmeric and it says to discontinue it 2 weeks before surgery (it doesn't mention anything on the bottle) . I last took it last night. My surgeon never mentioned it but I can't remember if I was taking it when I went for my consult and scheduling. Now I'm freaking out.

I am on blood thinners and my Dr. will not let me take Tumeric because it thins your blood. I bet you are ok but you definitely need to let them know.

I would definitely mention it. I know when I went for pre-op, they told me to discontinue all supplements immediately (my pre-op was only a couple of days pre-surgery - ordinarily they would have wanted me to stop 1 week before)

I read an article that said that the turmeric tablets aren't proven to be any better, that you should stick with just added the spice to your food. Just to be on the safe side I would discontinue all vitamins before surgery. You never know what you thought was harmless caused some reaction.

I'm having an ablation and colonoscopy and was told by my dr no supplements of any kind. The packet from the surgical center says no aspirin, ipuorofin, Motrin, Alene, fish oil, vitamin e or other blood thinners for 7days prior to surgery.

You're most likely going to be just fine stopping for this week prior, but do mention it to your doc. It's not because of any reaction with the anesthetics, but because of its blood-thinning properties (which may or may not have even taken effect in you, not having been on it very long) but it's nice to know during surgery that a blood thinner's been used so they know the cause of a little more "bloodiness" during the procedure.

Well the pre-op nurse wasn't worried about it. I did say I last took it Sunday night and I wasn't planning to take it or any other supplements until after surgery. She said that was fine and that they just need to be aware of what I've taken and when. I called the nurse this morning to ask (before going in case I had to reschedule) and she finally called me back around 4 pm. She said pretty much the same thing. Thanks everyone.

I too take turmeric but Not store bought pills. I make turmeric paste I belong to the group Turmeric users group on facebook. They can answer all your questions. The store bought pills may help you but they aren't really absorbed into your body like a homemade paste is look up even on google or aol and you will get information. Good luck with your surgery and stopping turmeric for a while might be a good thing.
