My dh has gone to New York to spend Thanksgiving with his sister whose husband just died. And their mother died a few months ago, and sister was very close to her. A hot-and-cold relationship with the husband who was an alcoholic, so that makes his death worse in some ways. (they were still married and living together) So dh is there and won't be back till Sunday. Dd's university gets off for Christmas break exactly one week after they get back from Thanksgiving so she asked me if I'd mind if she stayed down there. She and one roommate are staying, and there are two other friends who are staying, so they'll do their own Thanksgiving. And ds was just up here and I told him not to try to drive back up from Georgia when we'll be seeing him in December also. He'll spend Thanksgiving with his boss's family, along with other students and various people who aren't home. So it's just me and the dog. Am I sad? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! lol. I have been cooking Thanksgiving dinner for years and years and years and YEARS. And I don't even really like turkey or most of the sides. I like pumpkin pie and I may or may not buy myself one. But I am so happy not to have to do the holiday. For me it's not the day that's important, it's whenever I can see my kids. And they'll both be home in early December. When they come up I may actually try a turkey breast in my pressure cooker just because I want to experiment, but we'll see.
So I'm getting ready to make chicken noodle soup in my pressure cooker in a few minutes. I found THE best recipe so I'll be eating that for a few days. I might get a pizza for Thanksgiving, just because over the years I've been known to grumble about "why can't we just order pizza for Thanksgiving?" hehehehe
I'm in the middle of a "West Wing" binge on Netflix so I'm going to set up the extra monitor ds brought me (no we can't get Netflix on our TV) and watch that show and play online. I'll make another batch of boiled peanuts and have those as an appetizer to my chicken noodle soup.
I'll wake up in the morning whenever I want. And I'll only leave the house to walk the dog.
Dh travels a lot and was gone for two weeks last month and earlier this month but I had to work every single day of that time, plus I was on call at the hospital several times. But for the next six days I have NOTHING I HAVE TO DO except show up at church on Sunday to serve communion.

I'm sorry for the entire situation regarding your SIL's husband, but I'm very happy for you to get a nice quiet peaceful break from the annual thanksgiving cooking. Enjoy!

Good for you! I'm sorry about your husband's sister. I secretly have been trying to figure out a way I can be sick "cough" "cough" and skip the meal with the inlaws and just get my husband and kids to go. But I need to cook a side dish. I have been stressed so much lately that I really really REALLY would like a day to myself. I'm an introvert. I need to recharge before the rest of the holidays. Thanksgiving isn't my fav because I don't like most of the food, everyone is over eating and acting crazy (in a good way).

Now don't forget to watch Gilmore Girls!! (don't know if you are a fan or not!)
I am pretty excited for you. I am close to being alone, but not quite. I will have tomorrow and Friday alone (this day is dedicated to Gilmore Girls and one stop at a store for a Black Friday deal for SO). SO has to work and daughter is with her mom's family. I will enjoy it immensely!!

I too treasure alone time at holidays, but only because it's not the norm. I will be aloe from Christmas Day teatime until the Tuesday after this year - 'my DD will be at her boyfriend's family home , my oldest moved in to his girlfriends home when their baby was born and my youngest is going to his dad for a few days .
I'm not sure how I will be over a few days but I'm sort of looking forward to it!

I'd make a giant pot of gumbo if I was on my own. It wouldn't even be turkey gumbo, since I much prefer seafood gumbo.

That sounds great!
Our next door neighbor was going to be home alone one Thanksgiving as his wife and son were going to visit family out of state. He had to work the weekend. We invited him over, but he wanted to stay home alone. I completely understood. I did send DD over with a huge plate of food. He was good with that, lol.

I'm also a Myers-Briggs introvert, obviously. lol. And it's funny how extroverts, some of them anyway, don't understand that we're happy alone. It's because they would be miserable under the same circumstances. lol. I was chatting with a neighbor yesterday and asked her what they were doing for the holiday. Then she asked me and when I said I was going to be alone and told her what I was doing, all with a huge smile on my face, the first thing she said was "is there anyone who is also alone who you could get together with?" hahahahaha That was RIGHT after I'd said how much I was going to enjoy it. But she's the one who seems to have people over every single weekend, and sometimes during the week. For me one of Dante's circles would be to entertain people on a weeknight! (maybe on a weekend too....lol)

I love my 3 small children and my husband, but my fondest wish is that he would take them all somewhere for a week WITHOUT ME! And I could spend a whole glorious week doing whatever I want to do, eating whatever I want to eat, not nagging anybody to do their homework or clean or anything and I can work on all the projects with no interruptions! ENJOY your day! I'm envious!

Enjoy it! I have to admit that it does sound really appealing! I'd be watching movies and knitting all day, and eating junk food.

One year my family drove to another state for a football game on Thanksgiving. I went out to eat with another family and it was perfect. I cook for two days (for four people), we eat in 20 minutes and then they all go back to watching football. Thanksgiving (for me) was an easy holiday to not have family around.

I still haven't ruled out getting sick. I'm just trying to figure out how I can prepare the dish I've signed up for without getting anyone skeeved out thinking I prepared it while I was sick. Lord, help me if a pea is a relative and they are happy I kept my sick-self at home but sent my germs along with the side dish. I did make the pumpkin bread this past weekend...
