I have a 5 year old Kenmore fridge with an ice/water dispenser on the outside of the door. First it was iffy about making ice for a few weeks. then it completely quite making ice. Then it got iffy on dispensing water, and now its quit that too. Any thoughts before i call the repair guy? Hubby looked at it and doesn't think the lines are frozen. The other functions on the digital screen still work (temp control.... lights.... etc...) Thanks
Edited to add: did google for answers/ideas and didn't get anywhere with that.....

Sounds like something is wrong with it getting water to the various functions that need water.

Well, sarcastic me who just spent $170 to find out our heat pump wasn't working because DH hadn't been cleaning the filter, I'd Google for answers before scheduling a repair person. We don't have an ice maker on our fridge so I don't have any ideas.

I'd also google, if I were you... there's plenty of information out there on even very specific model #s, if you google the symptoms you're having and the brand / model of refrigerator. That's how my BF has fixed our icemaker the last couple times it's been on the fritz. He googles, finds some appliance-related forum posts, then finds a youtube video that shows what he needs to do. (So far, he's been lucky that it's worked, lol!)

Oddly enough, I can tell you the answer. Or at least the answer when it happened to me and had to call the repairman.
Essentially, there is a 'switch' of some sort that when your freezer starts loosing its temperature, stops the ice maker from making ice and the water flowing. It has something to do with the automatic heater that keeps your your coils from frosting. You may not even notice that the freezer and refrigerator are not cooling the way they are supposed to as apparently it is pretty gradual.
It was an easy repair (about $200) and as soon as the temperature return to normal, both started working again.
Of course, I learned all this after coming home from being away all weekend and loosing the entire contents of my fridge and freezer so the $200 was relative. lol

^^^ you know what? this might be the very thing that happened to our refrigerator last night / this morning!! My boyfriend went to get ice, and a big gush of water from melted ice cubes, came out, instead... the frig and freezer were still cold, but not as cold as they should be, and the repair guy (my BF is on vacation today, thank goodness) said it was some sort of switch that burned out and needed to be replaced-- and it cost exactly $200 to fix it! How odd is that?!?
I'm sorry to hear you lost the contents of your fridge/freezer, anxiousmom .

Are your hoses clogged?

Thank you! We will look into the switch thing a little further.

on our fridge, it was some sort of 'starter' relay switch... the fan in the fridge kept running, trying to cool down the inside, but the starter that was supposed to start the compressor was burned out, so the compressor wouldn't run to actually COOL things down. Don't know if that would affect the ice / water or not, though. Our fridge was actually getting warmer inside; you could tell.

We have a Kitchen-Aid and the ice maker has broken 3x. It used to make crushed ice (heaven) and it stopped. Then no water would come out or ice. Then no ice would come out. It has been working remarkably well for the past several years, though. It was kind of just in the first 2 years that it was acting up.
The repair guy the shop sends is very nice. That's pretty much all I know about it. Parts took at least a week to get to us.

Per the really nice man who fixed my fridge, there is some kind of sensor thing that trips when it gets too warm and prevents ice maker/water line and stops it from working. But honestly, I didn't totally understand and got lost after he said I wasn't going to have to buy a new refrigerator. lol

Have you cleaned the coils? That can make a big difference in performance. Also if you have hard water you may need a new ice maker. We recently had to replace ours. Water was pouring out of it one day and the hard water was to blame for the water not turning off when the ice tray was full. Very thankful I was standing there when that happened as it was a big puddle very fast. Hope it's nothing serious!

Our kitchen in our house in Michigan was designed around the previous owner's huge Sub Zero fridge. So we had to choose a fridge that kinda went into the space--thankfully it was by a doorway, so the smaller fridge we wound up with didn't look ridiculous.
We got a great deal at the Sear's outlet. We bought the extended warranty. The fridge quit making ice on Christmas Eve the year all of dh's family was visiting us.
It was the computer board behind the door panel. We wound up having to have that board replaced 2 or 3 times. We also had to have some work done on the copper water pipe going from our sink into the back of the fridge--I think it was damaged when the Sub Zero was disconnected, but I don't remember.
I do know I'm never owning another Kenmore or Frigidaire.

Make sure that the hose has not come loose. The tubing to my friend's fridge came loose and she had a water leak behind the fridge. Worth checking!
