I am wondering if anyone has noticed that Amazon is actually raising prices this week. I have been watching a serger sewing machine ever since it was reduced on prime day, and yesterday they raised the price by $30! Then a Columbia jacket I wanted to get for my son just went from $120 to $170! Both of these items are sold by Amazon not another company.
At least 5 stores are going to have the Kindle fire for $33.33 and Amazon is advertizing it for $49.
Do you think the computer is taking note of things I browse and then raise the price because of interest? Why would they be raising prices so much when everyone else is dropping theirs?

No one knows what causes Amazon to raise or lower prices.....sales, inventory, interest, number of clouds in the sky, way the wind is blowing..... My guess is they have an algorithm that takes all of that and more into consideration. If you're looking at something in particular I recommend camelcamelcamel.com which gives the pricing history.

The price of Prismacolor Premium pencils has been consistently down. I just bought the pack of 150 for $83. I bought them last summer for $135 and thought I was getting a deal. The 72 pack is only $38.

It wouldn't surprise me. Sometimes I will be browsing the internet and I put something in my "cart", then decide not to buy it and click off the site. I've never been on the website before, and then I get an e-mail saying I've left something in my cart without checking out. It freaks me out and it happened again today.

I had just today been looking at my local craft store--in fact I am in the parking lot of one right now -- neither had the set of 150 and their price was $160 and I would have been willing to pay that! I just saw your post and got them for under $90!! Whoot whoot!!!!!

I don't think it's just this week. There have been times when I've just searched for something on there and left it up in the search on an open tab in my browser (not even in the cart) and the price has gone up. Or worse yet, the thing totally sells out and then I can't get it at all. I've learned the hard way that if there is something I want and the price is good, just hit buy.
The camelcamelcamel suggestion is a good one, they email you when the price hits your designated price point without you having to constantly keep checking it.

I think some sites do note if you are checking out a certain item and do raise it.

I have told DH before that I was sure Amazon had some algorithm for raising the price based on how often I viewed something. I recall wanting a high end stroller for quite some time and going back to the site daily to see if the price would drop. I eventually gave up hope. I went to town that day to buy an Amazon gift card with the birthday cash I had been saving. By the time I got back home, they raised the price $50. I waited them out until the next week and it magically came back down. Makes you wonder!

The prices go up if you keep doing the same searches or looking for things over and over - and they go up and down multiple times a day. I agree about using CamelCamelCamel - that's what I used to snag my Cameo for a really good price.

The prices go up and down constantly. I leave items in my cart or saved and wait until the price drops back to what i want to pay or what I know I saw it cheaper. I was looking at suitcases 2 weeks ago and the price on the identical case went up over $45 in a matter of a couple of days. It is still sitting high bt I know it will drop again. It isn't a problem for me because i don't need the items right now.

It's annoying sometimes. The Harry Potter wand remote is $19.95 at Barnes and Noble. Amazon had it for almost $50. Are you shitting me, amazon?
Usually I can get better prices via Amazon but once in a while, it's ridiculous.

I wanted New Balance sneakers. Dick's, Nordstrom & Macy's were all cheaper than them. Usually they are cheapest or so I thought.

The Prismacolor pencils (72) were $32 last week. They went up to $38 this week. Inktense pencils are also a good deal. I notice that the price drops with Blicks puts them on sale.

I've noticed that the price goes way up the third time that I check an item. Often, though not always, the price is lower the second time I view an item.
It's really weird.
You'd think they'd want me to buy something but having a big price jump the third time I view something just guarantees that I won't buy it.
