I swear this dog is trying to kill me. She started throwing up, not eating, bloody diarrhea and generally not feeling good. Called the vet and the doctors weren't in today so I had to take her to a different one. He suspects pancreatitis but really only based on the fact that she's throwing up and has diarrhea. Her blood tests were normal. He gave us an antibiotic and an anti-emetic. Friday we will be following up with her regular doctor.
When the vet's office faxed her records the receptionist was shocked about how lengthy her file is.

Our Westie has a sensitive gi system that reacts to stress. Boarding used to trigger it, so my parents started keeping her when we were gone. Now even that stresses her out. It presents just as you described. A round of antibiotics does the trick. I hope it does for your pup! We now give our pup probiotics when she's away from us to try and prevent an attack.

oh no! hope she feels better soon! I remember when my terrier got a $700 case of indigestion. Pepsid. after $700 worth of Urgent Care tests, that's the best diagnosis and prescription they could come up with. two days later her regular vet gave her a hydration pack in her neck and she was fine. that visit was $60.

I'm sorry your pet is sick. When my doxie had pancreatitis, my Vet said give him cherry flavored Kaeopectate. He fortunately liked the flavor and lapped it up. Took care of the diarrhea.

I'm so sorry. Our dog got sick on Christmas day a couple of years ago, which added even more stress to the holidays. Hope your puppy is ok and feels better soon!

I don't know what to do. Her regular vet said they would probably have her on IV fluids and keep her for a few days. That's if the vet was there today, which they aren't. The vet she saw today said he's reluctant to do that. I don't know why. She has gone from wanting to go out to just lying on her bed and barely raising her head. I tried to give her some pedialyte but she's just not interested. The emergency vet is over an hour away. The vet she saw today said they could do the IV but there wouldn't be anyone monitoring her.

Oh dear, I don't like that. Do you have a syringe? Have you tried giving her pedialyte through a syringe? You should be able to get some down that way.

Dh got some into her with a syringe a few hours ago and she drank a tiny bit on her own. She went out to pee and drank some plain water. She didn't want to come back in but I want to know if she throws up again. When we went out she was holding her tail higher and walking a little faster.

She managed to keep the antibiotic down so far but she hasn't been drinking much. She won't eat at all. She wants badly to stay outside but the last time we took her out she started digging.

Glad y'all were able to get some water into her. The not eating wouldn't worry me. They can go 24 hours or more without food. Fluids are most important. Praying she is a bit better this morning and will take in more water. Do you have any canned food? I keep canned Hills ID on hand at all times so when/if they have a tummy upset, they can have that. They almost always (90% of the time) will eat it even if just a bit but as I said I wouldn't be as worried about food. Update when you can.

She seems quite a bit better this morning. She's getting up faster and wagging her tail more. She's not a big fan of the pedialyte so she's mostly drinking plain water. I offered her a little cottage cheese but she's still not interested. She gets the antibiotic in about 2 hours and the anti-emetic shortly after so we will see how well she keeps those down.

She's much better this afternoon. I think we may have found the culprit. We have a makeshift compost bin in the yard and there's some pokeweed growing in it. She has been digging around it so I suspect some critter is living under it and maybe she accidentally ate some of the berries. I looked it up and the symptoms are exactly what she has had. Since we've been keeping her in all the time unless we're with her just to go potty, she has gotten better. DH took the weeds out of the bin and put blocks all around it to keep her from digging. It may not be what caused it but if it is, we don't need a repeat.
Now for food. She has been turning her nose up at the cottage cheese but she ate about half a spoonful of canned cat food with no problem (earthborn holistic chicken). I gave her about a tablespoon total and she almost licked the design off the paper plate. She wants more but I know she needs to take it easy. What's the best way to reintroduce solid food? I know she's hungry but I'm guessing an entire can of cat food at once is not a good idea. Should I give some every hour? two hours?

Glad her meds have stayed down! And to reintroduce food, I would follow this. She has some great advice.
The bland sick diet for dogs! (What to feed your sick dog)
Dogs get sick for a wide variety of reasons. Whether they are recovering from surgery, suffering from a bacterial infection or having a bad case of diarrhea, sometimes they need a little help getting better. There are several steps to take when your dog has been having digestive upset. Following this "sick dog diet" will help them recover as soon as possible.
The first step is to fast your dog for 24 hours, which for most dogs means skipping two meals. By fasting your dog, you give their digestive system a chance to clear itself out and settle down. Giving the digestive tract a chance to calm down is the first step in making your dog feel better. Animals can go days without eating, so don't worry about starving your pet. You won't cause them any harm fasting them for 24 hours UNLESS they have a medical condition that requires regular food intake. Water should always be available, and you should add unflavoured electrolyte replacement such as Pedialyte to their water to replenish all they lose by having diarrhea.
After that 24 hour period, you can start feeding your dog a bland diet. The bland diet will introduce food back to your dog without stressing the digestive system. A bland diet is essentially easy to digest food that will provide healthy fibre to firm up the stool and soothe the digestive tract.
Feed your dog as many cups of the bland diet as you would their normal meal. Raw feeders can offer the same amount of bland food as they would a raw meal. For my 85lb German Shepherd, I give him two or three cups of the bland diet twice a day. Feel free to give half of that for the first meal to introduce your dog slowly to the food once again.
Consider feeding your dog one cup at a time spread out throughout the day if possible. This will help soothe the digestive system and firm up the stool. How to make a bland sick diet for your dog:
Grain-Free Bland Diet: Two large sweet potatoes One can of pure pumpkin (not pie filling) One cup of boiled ground beef or shredded chicken breast 1/8 a teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1/8 a teaspoon of ground ginger
Rice and Meat Bland Diet: Two cups of double-boiled brown rice or oatmeal One can of pure pumpkin (not pie filling) One cup of double boiled ground beef or chicken 1/8 a teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1/8 a teaspoon of ground ginger
Additional ingredients you can add: Boiled green beans Unflavoured Electrolyte Replacement (add 1/4 cup per 20lbs to a bowl of water and/or add a tablespoon to the meal) Probiotic and Digestive Enzyme supplement Baked potato
Feed this diet for 24-48 hours and then re-assess your dog's condition. No change or worsening of symptoms will require a visit to your dog's veterinarian.

Thanks. right now I only have the canned cat food plus rice and cottage cheese (her usual bland diet is rice and cottage cheese). I have to leave for a bit but the kids are going to give her a bit of cat food mixed with cottage cheese (so that it's at least a little bland) or else I'm afraid she won't eat it. She goes to her regular vet tomorrow afternoon. I'll stop and get some of those other ingredients when I can. None of our little podunk stores are open on Thanksgiving. lol

Her follow up went well. Her blood tests are somewhat abnormal in areas but the vet said that's to be expected from a dog recovering from an illness. The other vet didn't even tell us anything about the results (other than to say they seemed normal-which they were not) but luckily our vet requested them and was able to show me what had changed between then and now. Huge difference. So now we monitor and get her back on feed slowly. I got 2 cans of the prescription bland diet but I'm going to make the recipe listed above and eventually mix it with her regular food and slowly transition her back to it. She had been eating a fish based food but they also make others. bison/lamb, lamb, chicken, and turkey/chicken/whitefish types.

Has she been tested for Lyme? Mine currently has it and we don't get here and he doesn't dig. He's not a digger fortunately. That was the first ?? they asked me was if was digging. I"m not sure why they would dig with it. Our biggest issue was his lameness and he was the same way at first not eating, lifting his head, he didn't have a fever but he had all the other symptoms. We've been giving him antibiotics, steriods and tramadol for the pain and swelling in his legs. So he was advanced by the time we got it. I've also been giving him the low sodium chicken broth when he doesn't want to eat alot but that's gotten better with the steriods. Both my dogs don't like the pumpkin but they do like the sweet potato and it's really good for them along with rice. He will eat that if I add it to his bowl I hope you guy feels better or they can figure it out. It took us a while to figure it out. We're just hoping his muscle tissue isn't totally wasted.Hope for the best for you guys. It's so hard when you can figure it out.
