What did everyone think last night?
For the writers saying everything is not going to be about weight, they're sure talking a lot about it. And now to embark on the surgery storyline? It's going to preoccupy even more. I also thought it was weird how she just came in and "announced" it. But maybe it means we're through with Toby.
It was nice to see Kevin have a heart when he was sharing the pie with the actress and when he let Miguel be the pilgrim.
Randall being all excited for Thanksgiving at the beginning of the episode made me smile. I think I have a little crush on that actor. It will be interesting to see what they do with the relationship with him and Rebecca. And if he'll find out that Beth knew and didn't tell him.
I think the people helping coach the age progression of John Huertas and Mandy Moore are outstanding. The make up, the speech, the clothing, the body movements-they're all excellent. Even when she was hiking in the present day, she was hiking like an older woman. And how the other actors can so thoroughly treat them like they're aging in terms of how they touch them, address them, etc, is really well done.

I agree with everything you wrote, especially the weight thing. Its getting a little much now. IDK. I wish they'd just let her BE her. The weight doesn't have to consume her ENTIRE life does it? Can't they just let her live life and be glorious as she is?
I enjoyed last night's episode a lot, and ITA about the crush on Randall. He's perfect. AND he cooks Thanksgiving dinner too?! <swoon>

I am loving this show. I was so glad to see Kate stand up to Toby and my heart broke for her when she was on the plane and the lady gave her a dirty look for sitting beside her. To see the two hold hands when there was all the turbulence made me tear up.
I loved how Randall saved all the thanksgiving traditions, and his excitement of the day. I wasn't sure how he'd react to knowing his mom knew his dad. At first I thought he was going to let it slide. I wonder if some of his anger isn't also for his dad not coming forward sooner too?

I love this show but they don't have to make Kate's story solely about her weight! I do liked it when they showed her being good at her job. I mean, there are so many other stories they can write for her. I wonder if Kate will move to the east coast to be with her brothers. Beth asking Randall about his bad assistant, maybe Kate can move and be Randall's assistant this time? I'd like to see Kate, Kevin, and Randolph interacting more.
Felt so bad for Randall. Still trying to figure out when Jack died and when Miguel and Rebecca got together. Obviously Randall and Keven can't stand him, soo, just wonder what happened there.
I loved seeing the flash backs with the triplets and the parents and their Thanksgiving tradition, that was just so sweet.

Miguel - seems like a puppet, clearly appearing only to show animosity from the brothers/further past storyline, & lacks chemistry with Rebecca; I look forward to more backstory & substance for this character
Rebecca - my least favorite character. Although I realize she never wanted kids, suffered a stillbirth/depression, & was reluctant to adopt, her over-controlling & favoritism toward Randall may be catching up with her!
Kevin - continues to add more depth to his character
Toby - criticized for seemingly never respecting Kate's wishes & always pushing boundaries, his quick acceptance of her rejection seemed out of character (& will be a dissappointing exit, if his role in the story is over)
Kate - the overlooked child living in the shadows of either the smart or famous brother (why doesn't she get a turn to wear the hat?), which likely explains the root cause of her weight. Her late flight causes her to miss family traditions & subjects her to more perceived public shaming, then her entrance/announcememt is overshadowed by Randall...again. Hoping the conversation between Randall & Rebecca is foreshadowing Kate relocating to the east coast to replace Randall's assistant & bring the family back together.
Randall - Rebecca's favorite child, who is smart & successful with a loving family & still burdened by his past; this new information will undoubtedly change the dynamic of the family
Beth - the polar opposite of Rebecca, who keeps Randall grounded
Randall & Beth's girls - totally adorable!
William - my favorite character for his cool vibe, humility, gratefulness, & wisdom; he impacts every character.
I look forward to next week's episode. Until then, hope everyone has a safe & fun Thanksgiving (Go Redskins!)...

Isn't the actor who plays Randall the same guy that got kicked off of Greys Anatomy for being a jerk?
I love this show, and even if that was/is true - I love his character in this show and think he does a great job.
Great script - tugs at my heartstrings just about every episode.

I also thought it was weird how she just came in and "announced" it. But maybe it means we're through with Toby. I agree - I thought it was strange how she just came in there and blurted it out. However, I can see why her character is so focused on her weight. It does consumer her life - everything she does she has to think about her weight first (I have to get 2 airplane seats, I have to climb all those stairs, I can't have that certain food, etc. etc) - I like how she told Toby that she needed to focus on getting her life and weight under control and she couldn't do that with him. However, I hope it isn't the end of Toby - I like him. A friend of mine, who also watches the show, said that apparently it was written into her contract that she would have to lose weight for the role so perhaps the actress will really go through bariatric surgery or perhaps she will lose weight as part of the character's development (even if she doesn't go through surgery - either the character or the actress). I do wish she would move out to the east coast where all her family is. I would like to see more interactions there. Plus, I remember her telling Toby that she and her mom didn't get along all that great, so I am interested to see why and see more of a story between her and her mom (as adults) I love Randall - love how he woke up and was all happy and prepping for Thanksgiving and that he kept the family traditions. I feel so bad for him though that he found out that he could have known about his birth father his whole life. Looks like they will develop that more on the next episode. I'm starting to like Kevin a bit more. At first he seemed shallow and self-centered but I think he is coming around.

Brown plays Randall, and he was "Roland" on Army Wives and I loved him on that too. He also won an Emmy (or maybe it was a Golden Globe) for his portrayal of Chris Darden in the People vs. OJ Simpson Save

You know, I thought that was really random that they brought her (unnamed bad assistant) up out of the blue like that, but your idea makes a lot of sense. I thought it was to set up how close Rebecca and Randall are--she knows everything going on in his life because they talk often. To set up for how deep her betrayal is. Kate and Randall live nowhere close to each other--opposite coasts. I don't see her moving.

It was discussed on The Talk today that the actress who plays Kate agreed to lose weight as part of her role on This Is Us.

I loved it when Kate made the decision to break up with Toby because I've been saying she deserves so much better. I don't like him for her. Haven't for weeks. When they were at dinner and she was talking, going through the motions I was yelling at the TV, "You go Kate! Dump his ass! You deserve so much better". Like she could hear me. I too loved the part where Randell got up so early and was so excited to start the traditions for Thanksgiving Day. And especially when the flashbacks would play and you'd see the family in the past going through what they did on their Thanksgiving Day that created those traditions. I wonder why Kate's Mom was so critical of their family and especially of their children? I heard Kate on the phone saying, "I'm not going to subject my children to this". I wonder what all of that animosity was about? I thought is was so sweet of Randell to go back to his father's apartment to get the music tapes that his father recorded with his buddies on past Thanksgiving Day, but sad that he came across that letter from his mother. He was so angry at his mother when he came back. Part of me thought he was a bit childish in that he couldn't hold in that anger at least until the next day to confront his mother-he ruined the holiday for his children. But then, I have no idea what that would have felt like in his shoes, maybe it just wasn't possible to hold that much anger in. I agree it was strange for Kate to burst in with the announcement that she had decided about the surgery but then again, maybe it felt like she'd finally after all of these years found the answer to her weight problem and she wanted to share it with her family and she couldn't wait another second-she was that excited! I can see that. I felt sorry for her that Randell stole the moment with his crisis and everyone was all up in arms right before she could walk in and share her news. I understand Rebecca keeping the secret from him. He was a child and his biological father was a drug addict. What would you do if you adopted a child and you found out the biological father was a drug addict? You'd keep the news from that child, tell him he's special because although he wasn't born in your tummy (when he's small) he was chosen and leave it at that. I do think as an adult though were it me I would have told that child (now adult) the truth. I think that's where Rebecca went wrong and that's where Randell has cause for his anger.

This week I was actually thinking of you, @missjen, while I was watching it, because just last week you mentioned how the weight is so much of her part on the show, and this week is was just ALL of it. I mean seriously---all the rest of the family is together and relating to one another, and we have Kate conveniently stuck behind on a plane where her weight can come up over and over again. She's reassuring people that she bought 2 seats, we see the bit with the belt extender, even after thinking she's going to die, her reaction still goes to her weight. And what really struck me as odd was when she was breaking things off with Toby and she said to him that it wasn't all about the weight, that it was about all parts of her---but then she still only listed the weight. She said something along the lines of "the weight and everything else". How hard would it have been to write that line letting her mention specifics---her new job, her relationship with her family, anything at all? But nope, just the weight and then some vagueness that would have driven me crazy if I was in Toby's shoes. Thanksgiving dinner would have been a great chance for use to see the problems in Kate & Rebecca's relationship, but nope, instead they decided to make Thanksgiving about Randall, William, & Rebecca; about Randall's love for their traditions; about Olivia & Kevin; and when Kate finally arrives she doesn't even say "Hello! How are you?" it's immediately about the weight. This week I felt more annoyed than ever about this, can you tell? (And even in the flashbacks Kate's character was just basically given the same line to repeat over & over again. And while it wasn't weight related, I still feel like WTHeck with Kate? Especially after she was virtually ignored in last week's flashbacks.)

See, I thought it showed that she could remember something so trivial like his assistant's name but yet couldn't remember Kevin's plays name even though he told her 8 times. Stacy

Aside from my Kate annoyance, I really did love seeing how all of the traditions started and then played out in the present. That was sweet. I adored how much Randall loves Thanksgiving now. I loved how Rebecca heard the kids when they told her that she acted differently (in a bad way) when they visited her parents, and she decided to do something about it in the end. And I love how Jack definitely made lemonade out of their Thanksgiving Day lemons. It was heartbreaking to see Randall go from being so, so happy to so devastated over the course of the day. Beth didn't have a lot of quality screen time this week, but I loved when she stood up to Rebecca and for her marriage and insisted that Rebecca put an end to the secret that evening.

Oh, and I agree that they do a fabulous job with the aging of the characters of Miguel & Rebecca. (Why in the world does ProBoards not recognize a completely traditional and common name like Rebecca? Every week I wonder this as it underlines her name in red in all of my posts. )

For those who want to be spoiled as to whether Toby is gone for good, It shows him being in the first 13 episodes so obviously he isn't gone for good.
