My parents JUST moved to Seattle from across the country, and I was thinking about getting them gift cards/certificates to activities or restaurants that are Seattle-specific (aka not chains) to help them explore their new city.
They're in their late 50s, early 60s and are pretty open minded and adventurous when it comes to food and travel activities. They also love the outdoors (nothing hardcore, but sightseeing and light hiking). My mom LOVES a really good French or Euro style bakery, btw.
They will be living on one of the islands west of downtown, maybe a 45 min ferry ride, if that is helpful information. My mom will be taking the ferry into downtown for work every day. My dad is more or less retired.
Does anyone have any suggestions for good experience or food related gifts to give these new Seattle transplants for Christmas/my mom's birthday?

gift certificate for Ivars.. there is a branch right on the waterfront..south of the ferry terminal tickets to a ball game or huskys football. underground seattle tickets. a couple of Betty McDonald books.. The Egg and I and Onions in the Stew.. onions is about a couple who lived on bainbridge island and commuted downtown..in the 1950's.. with their two teens. both very funny books.

I'm not a Seattle local, but we go a few times a year - just got back on Tuesday If they are pizza fans, I'd suggest Serious Pie. They have 3 locations. It's not typical pizza, but very gourmet offerings. It's by local chef Tom Douglas. I think many of his restaurants would be good choices. If they are Starbucks fans, the Starbucks Reserve is a fun place unlike a "regular" Starbucks, but I don't think they have special gift cards. Serious Pie also has a location at the Reserve.

Which island are they on? We might be able to make suggestions based on their location.
I agree about the Discover Pass....what a great idea! If your mom is coming into downtown daily, I'd concentrate on downtown restaurants for now so that they don't need to bring their car over, rather than in some of the neighborhoods. A GC to the Pike Place Market?

The Renee Erickson restaurants are popular here. Walrus and the Carpenter, Bateau, etc -- they are very Seattle and are pretty reasonable, and they do gift cards.
REI has a lot of classes if they are interested in learning various outdoor activities. The Center for Wooden Boats has sailing classes. Their island may have a place that offers kayaking lessons, depending on which one it is.

Your description means they have moved to either Vashon or Bainbridge Island. If it's the latter, I can give you some Bainnbridge specific ideas if you like. Sadly I don't know Vashon well enough to do so. If you don't want to be specific on the thread, you can PM me.
I really like your idea for Seattle-themed gifts.
