Can you search the web and access email from it?
I'm thinking of getting my dad one since he's moved back here for the winter and had to leave his computer home. He doesn't feel comfortable going in DH's office to use the computer and the Fire tablet is certainly a cheaper way to go than an IPad since all he'd really use it for was email and web searching.

Yes you can. DS16 got an aftermarket case with keyboard ($10-15 on ebay) so he uses is for school. No more carrying around the heavier laptop.

To answer your question, yes, you can. However, if that's how he'll primarily be using it, he may find it to be a bit awkward. I use my Fire mainly for reading books. It's also nice for watching movies, but the Fire I have has a small screen, so it's not suggested for everyday movie watching. OMG! I just checked the Black Friday price on Fires! YES! Get him one. I paid $100 more for mine, but it's my favorite thing in the whole world. Seriously! For only $20 more you can get him the 16GB. That's the route I'd go. I haven't been able to download very many apps to it as I have the 8GB one. If I were buying one today this is the one I'd get.

Funny, that's the one I had in mind for him.

I love my kindle fire! I just ordered one for DH, can't beat the price today. I personally haven't needed anything bigger than the 8G, but I'm not a big app person. I mainly use it for facebook, Pinterest and browsing the internet. You can put an SD card in it and I think DH will movies on his, he watches a lot of movies on his phone.

I love my Fire for email and surfing the web and hate it for reading. For the price, I think it's phenomenal. There aren't a ton of apps available for it, but between my Fire and my phone I don't feel the Fire lacks much.

Funny, that's the one I had in mind for him. To me it feels a bit awkward probably due to the difference in size of the keyboard on the Kindle verses the a keyboard on a PC or even a laptop. But then again, I'm one that I don't even like emailing from my phone as the keyboard is so small. My Dad was a big reader. Before he died he switched over to books on CD because his eyes hurt if he read too much. The Kindle Fire will read your books to you if the book is text to speech enabled. Your Dad may enjoy this feature. I love to listen to books while I'm doing housework or driving.

I love my Kindle Fire and use it to surf the web, FB and to watch videos and movies. Don't even use a Desktop computer since I got it. Today's price is fantastic, I'm tempted to order another.....

Will it work in Canada?
A few years ago I wanted to purchase it for our DS who lives in Ottawa. Fortunately I found out many features would not work in Canada prior to purchase.

I just bought a few for my classroom. I looked last year, but waited. I found some good apps so I think I'll keep all 4. I wanted a simple tablet without personal items on it.
