Mine was the stuffing...was asked to bring stuffing, made a new recipe that had good reviews. Had thought of making a little cup at home and sampling it, but didn't.
So sister is cooking and I tell her approximately how long it needs to be in oven since she's got things at a different temp. Mom says she's heard of these deep fried stuffing balls and we should put them in the turkey fryer. All of the sudden the tin of stuffing is now half a tin of stuff and a bunch of stuffing balls. I never saw the results from the fryer, but the results from the now thin layer of stuffing cooked too long was dried out crust that I wouldn't even try....
Wish i'd tried it at home, spent the morning on it and have no idea whether it is worth making again because it was ruined.

momto4kiddos I would NOT have been happy to have someone in my family hijack my food! My fail was my sweet potatoes. They got overcooked and mushy, because the turkey took longer than I expected. I like them firm, not mashed. Oh, well...

I am one of the world's worst cooks but I pull it all together for one meal a year and that's Thanksgiving. I had 2 new dishes I added because my turkey was so small (my mom gave it to me) and the only thing that happened as it always does is I burned the biscuits. I always leave them in just a bit too long trying to get everything else on the table. But they were edible.
I'm actually feeling just a little bit proud of myself pulling off so many dishes. You know just now I remembered I forgot the corn.....

My turkey. Set the timer for 2hours (1/2 the cooking time). It was very brown at 2hours. Temp at breast and thigh was 180!!! Pulled it and covered to rest and started the sides. Cut into it and it was still bloody near the bone and all the bottom. Threw it back in the oven with the stuffing and then the rolls. Breast was good but didn't trust the thighs. I'll be putting it into a casserole today to make sure it's cooked through.

brussels sprouts were my fail - I roasted them with some bacon - never roasted them before - and they just weren't good

My poor DD-22 made a berry pie at her in-laws. She is not the best cook, she's learning, but she was so nervous about it.
I guess it came out runny and bitter and she had to throw it out. She said she was so embarrassed and felt like they think she's a bad wife.
I told her even experienced cooks have flops now and then. She's going to try another pie recipe for Christmas and I told her to try it at home first.

By the time you get to them you're doing so many things that they're the forgotten item. The running joke in my family is that it's not mealtime until Aunt Frances burns the bottoms of the rolls. My fail occurred before I even got started. I was preheating the oven Wednesday evening to start cooking cornbread for the dressing and about halfway through the preheat my kitchen (and a good deal of the house) filled with smoke. I had to unplug the oven to kill the preheat, then let it cool down so I could clean what appeared to have been bacon grease that had spilled onto the bottom of the oven (the griddle had been in the oven but I removed it - guess DS spilled some bacon grease from it when he had put it in there). Doors and windows open, fans going to pull the smoke out, and a few adult beverages later and I was able to get a start on my cooking (which threw me off on Thursday - 3pm instead of noon mealtime, but everyone was fine with that as long as they got their turkey and dressing LOL)

Actually, we did not have turkey but a pot roast. It did not come out - over 50 years of cooking pot roast and my first fail was the first time we did a roast for Thanksgiving. Also, the pecan pie was a spectacular fail as well. I used egg beaters instead of regular eggs and it kinda blew up. There was no explosion, it just looked like it blew up in slow motion. I have never seen anything like it and I've cooked hundreds of pecan pies (My students used to bake them and sell them every year)
Oh well, the store bought turtle pie was a hit. I loved it.

My sweet potato casserole looked awful but tasted fine. The turkey was pink at the bone too. Even though the temp said otherwise. My thermometer must not be right.

I bought a blueberry pie from the store, and it tasted good, but it, too was runny. For our meal, I have to say the entire thing was just sorta blah. I'm not good at multi-tasking different dishes, so several years ago we started catering the main parts of the meal. There's a smallish caterer by us that we love the food, so that's been our go-to. The past couple of years there's been something here or there we weren't too happy with. This is the second time now the mashed potatoes were a miss. I could not figure out what was wrong with them, but something was off. And when my kids won't each mashed potatoes, yeah...something's wrong with them, lol While the meal was "okay" I've already decided I'll go back and try making a small fresh turkey next year.

The key is to roll with it. Fortunately, my family (in-laws) have always been encouraging even when something doesn't work out. Those are the things we laugh about now. Without fail, the year I first made stuffing/dressing comes up. It ended up being soup. LOL! Mom and dad tried it anyway. She told me that it had a good flavor and to not give up on it. We all have to learn. I think it's wonderful that she is willing to try again. Remind her also that some recipes are simply failures. The ones that turn out right but you can't give it away it tastes so bad. LOL!

It turns out that we as a family don't really care for cornbread dressing! It gets all crumbly instead of retaining the shape of the bread cubes. So that was a fail. Back to regular white bread cubes next year.

My breakfast casserole- it wasn't a flop, but the shredded hash browns that make up the base were more like mashed potatoes. Weird.

Well....first my oven caught on fire...the pumpkin pie overflowed and the next thing I knew there was smoke and flames. My rolls weren't too good. Same recipe, but they were kind of crusty. I feel bad because my daughter was telling her friend that my rolls are the bomb, and they weren't this time. I think they got too hot in the second rise. I burnt the bottom of my stuffing. Otherwise everything else was good. The turkey was the bomb!! Nice and moist.

I burnt my mashed potatoes. Since I was working on other stuff I just left them to continue boiling until I was ready to mash them. Then it stared to get really smoky and I realized all of the water had evaporated and the potatoes were getting scorched All of my guests tried some and told me they weren't that bad. But we definitely didn't save the leftovers.

For me, my dressing was too moist. I'm not sure what I didn't wrong And the mashed potatoes not right either. Too pastee. Youngest son liked them tho.

The pumpkin pie. DH isn't a fan but it's not Thanksgiving without it (last year we tried pumpkin bread and I missed the pie). So I decided to try something new and made pumpkin ricotta crostata from the Martha Stewart cookbook on pies.
I'm not sure what happened... the kids used the leftover filling and made their own tiny pies, and those tasted good, but the next day the big pie had NO flavor and was kind of mushy. Even the pine nuts on top did not have any taste. I guess one night in the fridge sucked all the flavor out or something. I was expecting subtle pumpkin flavor not no flavor at all... I'm not able to make pie on the day of Thanksgiving, so next year I'm going to have to try a different recipe.
The pecan pie (from the same cookbook) turned out great though.

My only fail was forgetting to put the cranberry sauce out. We ate about 4 pm and I didn't even realize it until DH said something about 10 pm last night. Oops! Oh well, it will go well with all the leftovers later today!

My turkey was slightly over-cooked. I always have turkey timing issues. It's either not done or too dry. My other problem is getting everything ready at the same time. I always end up with something that needs heated in the microwave.

We had a bunch of Sister Schubert's rolls in and we sat around waiting and waiting and waiting...every thing else was done. Finally after multiple checks we finally figured out that someone turned the oven off and we were waiting for the rolls to cook in a cold oven. We started on everything else, the rolls showed up on the table eventually.

My sweet potatoes with maple bourbon sauce and apples and pecans looked amazing but the taste was not great. I am going to think of a way to salvage the left overs as an ingredient in a casserole tomorrow.

No fails for us this year! DH brined the turkey and roasted it in the oven this time since last year he deep fried it and it got a little overdone and dried out. This year, perfection! I made my rolls and the pumpkin pie the day before, recipes I've made for years that I could do in my sleep. We also had corn, mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes, none of which ever give us any trouble. So for once, we were all good here! I guess if I have to claim a fail, it would be that my biggest Tupperware bowl still smells like brine! Hopefully soaking it in vinegar will get the stink out.

Not really a huge fail and not really all my fault but I'm still a little disappointed. I started the ham in the crockpot around 6am knowing it would be done around 1:30. At noon I put the veggies in the oven to roast them and the sweet potatoes on the stove for mashed sweet potatoes. Well both side dishes cooked quicker then I thought they would and dinner was ready at 1 instead. I wasn't to worried because I told the BF to be here at 1:30. Well he fell asleep and didn't get to my house till 2:30. I was so upset because for an hour and fifteen minutes I had to try to keep dinner warm. I finally gave up and just reheated everything when he got to the house.

That happened often enough as I was growing up that "brown n serve" rolls are known as "black n flings" Wasn't my cooking but my mil undercooked the turkey today, even after 4 hours. She used an instant read thermometer in the breast, and not a thigh. When I went to cut the turkey off the bone the juices were not just not clear, they were RED. We cut the turkey off and put it back in the oven but the dark meat ended up quite rubbery. In retrospect, I think she had the temp too low by about 25 degrees, and the cook time should have been more like 4.5 hours at least, for the size of the bird she had.

The whole meal - UGH!
We went to a restaurant for the first time ever. Usually I host, but this year there were several reasons i couldn't. SIL recently downsized her home, so she couldn't pick it up. I found a riverfront restaurant in MIL's town that had a reasonable price, so we took MIL there. SIL said she and BIL didn't care for that restaurant, so she cooked for her kids at home. I thought she was just being a food snob, but WOW she was right! The turkey was so tough and dry that DS couldn't even cut it. The veggies were steamed with no seasoning whatsoever - and there wasn't even salt & pepper on the tables. The sweet potatoes were gluey and inedible... I could go on and on. The salads and the pumpkin pie were good, but the other desserts were downright terrible. Our niece was supposed to be with us, but she missed her train, and there wasn't another for 2 hours.
On the upside: the waiter was awesome and charming. The room was quiet enough that I could converse with the whole table (not just the people on either side of me), and we did have a lovely view. As soon as we got in the car, we all cracked up at how terrible the food was! Luckily, we're not a high-maintenance bunch, so nobody felt like their holiday was ruined.
