his penchant for extreme packing and storing is going to be the death of me. I'm trying to get out a few boxes of christmas decorations, however I'm not sure which ones I want right now. I've been crawling around in our under-stairs storage area, peeking into boxes to see which ones I want to drag out. He's got it all packed in so nice and beautiful - BUT I can't freaking lift a lid to see what's what! Basically, I'll have to unpack the whole area just to get a box free to see what lies inside. Oy. Love him, but it's always like this . . . let him near a group of things to organize and he's got it all slotted together like a Jenga tower. SaveSave

^^ Well, THERE'S a novel idea! Usually, the boxes will hold different things each year, KWIM? But . . . maybe I'll label as I unpack.

I'm a excessive collector of all things Christmas which means I have enough boxes full of stuff the decorate 3 houses. I was always going through boxes every year trying to find what I wanted to use until I just got fed up several years ago. I knew I couldn't part with any of it but couldn't continue the hunt and search.
My solution, I dragged out every box after Christmas and made an inventory list of what was in it then each box got numbered. Now when I'm ready to decorate I pull up my list on the computer, print it out, stick it up on the wall in the basement and I can find just what I want that year.
The good part of keeping my master list on the computer is I can delete or add as necessary.
Even. after a major purge 2 yrs ago I still have way too much stuff stored away but a day or two of going through it all and doing the inventory I can find anything in a matter of minutes.

I love my Hubs, but he's that person who can't keep on track. He'll become distracted by something that needs attention and lose focus on his original goal.

Put all Christmas in red plastic containers and stack them together. It makes decorating time so much less stressful.

Now I see "you" next to a towering stack of boxes playing Jenga with them. Funny sight. Not fun for you. I agree with the label suggestion. I am getting rid of stuff and repacking, too. Then I am putting labels on all 4 sides of each container.

Sharpies are your best friends right now!
I love my DH, too, but the man cannot close a drawer all the way. Sock drawer, underwear drawer, kitchen utensil drawer - he always leaves them open just a little bit - just enough to drive me crazy!

I am the one in our family with the amazing spacial skills. We refer to it as Tetris, though. They all know if they want to help, just put the ornaments in the appropriate boxes and I will then put those in the storage boxes. When anyone else tries, there are numerous boxes that won't fit. No spacial skills whatsoever.

We have 33 boxes of Christmas items so everything that isn't a tree or a wreath box is labeled. Our crawl space is petty short, so it hard to find that you need.

SaveSaveAfter being really sick over one Christmas, I learned to do what my neighbor does with her Christmas decorations. She has a lot of stuff, but one year decided to separate everything into just what she would want for a "small" Christmas. Small being the years she isn't hosting her entire family or doesn't feel well enough to drag it all down. Those boxes contain tree decorations and a few favorite things that she wants out every year. They are now labeled and always put away last. This way, she has the choice to do just the amount she wants to, without the hassle of checking every box. It was so simple and so smart! I stole the idea from her and you can too! SaveSave

Good grief, you do have a lot to organize. I don't have that many, but I find that every year, I'm still digging through my storage closet, trying to remember where I put stuff, in spite of the previous year's careful packing away and labeling!

I have a friend who is a major holiday decorator. She lives in a 2 story house and has a huge attic storage area accessible from a door in her media room. She has 78 rubbermaid tubs for Christmas alone, then there are all the other holidays. She has so many tubs stored in that huge attic space that the ceiling began to fall and she had to have a contractor shore up the space for her holiday stuff. I limit myself to 6 tubs of holiday stuff. I have a small house & no patience for all the extra decor.

I have 4 tubs for Christmas. They are so well packed that nobody else can put anything away. They'd never get it to fit. I also cringe when we actually get a holiday gift because those boxes are so well arranged that adding something just changes the puzzle and they are already full.
I never thought of having those spacial skills as a burden to anybody. I'm the master packer in this house. DH couldn't pack 2 socks in an extra large suitcase. When we know we will need some space on the way home, I let him pack because there is zero efficiency.

I worked in a Christmas store one summer and found a love of Christmas (other than the music). We have four trees with a ton of ornaments. I have downsized some every year. Perhaps when a kid or two moves out of the house, a tree will follow them.

My husbands job is to stack and unstack as needed.
I have taped inventory lists on the lid of each lis which makes figuring out what each box has and needs to have at the end of the season.
I also write Christmas in thick black sharpie on all 4 sides that way which ever way dh stacked the boxes, I know what holiday it is for.
Do the same for Halloween, Easter, etc.

I had my DH build me a wall of shelves in our furnace room just the right height for Rubbermaid bins. No more stacking! It's the best thing ever.
I have every bin labeled. I also purged a lot of stuff. I'm down to just what I love.

I have clear boxes for storage, and I print out a list of what's in each box twice - it goes inside the box, facing out, one on the short side and one on the long side. DH has strict instructions to stack them so that the list is visible easily - so I just have to go to whichever box contains the stuff I want. I think we have about 12 boxes of Christmas stuff, not counting trees, wreaths and greenery.
I also store off-season clothes using this method, so I can easily find what I want if needed.
