My sewing machine quit working years ago. Well, it sews forward, but on the reverse stitch it just gets all buggered up. Also the piece that stops the thread spool from flying off disappeared. I know I could probably replace it, but that's more money.
Fixing it will cost around $125. There are new sewing machines at that price point and slightly above. I don't need or want anything fancy. I HATE sewing. So I just use it for hemming pants and such. Also I have some gifts I want to make that will require a machine. I've looked at a few on Amazon, but really I'm in the dark about sewing machines. So any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Go to your local sewing shop and tell them how much you want to spend. Then buy the best one you can get for the money. If you want to spend $200 I am sure he has a machine for you.

I've always been happy with the quality of Singer machines. If you're just looking for a basic model you can get one on Amazon for less than $100.00.

Costco has the Brother machine on sale right now. I have that one and it's great! Strong enough to go through denim but careful enough to go thru paper for my craft projects. I thought no its $144 right now.

I have 2 Janome machines and I am very happy with them. One is a basic model that my mum bought me when I first started sewing. The other is an embroidery machine that I've never actually used for embroidery. And now I don't even sew any more except for repairs. A couple of the features that I really like on my more expensive machine is the automatic needle threader (especially now that my eyesight is not as good as it once was) and the automatic buttonhole function/foot.

I stick with Kenmore. I have one that is now about 38 years old. I had it totally overhauled a few years ago at a Sears depot, and have used it ever since. About three years ago, I decided to ask for a new one for Christmas. My wonderful DH drove to a city about an hour from here on Christmas Eve day to get it for me, as he had researched where they were available at last minute [of course!] and that was the closest Sears to us. I was thrilled and especially when he told me what he had had to do to get it for me. And you know what? I haven't even used it yet. I still use the old one. I keep telling myself that I have to sit down and take a few minutes [hours?] and learn the new one, because it is a bit different, but just haven't found those minutes or hours yet. What a terrible ungrateful wife I am.

A baby lock 9 is $200. I just saw it online for $149. It is a basic machine that sees through jeans if you need to. And it is all metal inside.
I bought the brother from Costco and you will be hard pressed to find somebody to fix it.

There are no more Kenmore sewing machines. My original Kenmore (a cheap machine I bought for $60) was actually made by Janome, as were many other Kenmores in years past. That's why they were such reliable machines!

I bought the brother from Costco and you will be hard pressed to find somebody to fix it. I've had 2 brother sewing machines in 20 years and I've never had to have them repaired. First one worked great but I replaced it about 4 years ago when Costco had a sale I couldn't pass up. I also had a Brother serger that I had serviced at a regular sewing machine place. Never had a problem but I liked to get it cleaned and serviced.

I had a Bernina that lasted for 30 yrs. When it finally gave out a few months ago, I got a Bernette - Chicago 5 model. I'm very pleased with it.

I just saw this listed on Amazon. It looks pretty basic and the price is great. About 15 years ago my husband bought me a basic sewing machine from Walmart and I'm still using it. I have no need for anything fancier. I use it mainly for hemming jeans, repairs, and basic sewing. I've been working on flannel pajama pants this weekend. Singer Sewing Machine
