My parents lived there before his reign, and they were able to leave Cuba after he took over. My dad's wish was always to go back, unfortunately it will never happen for either of my parents. If my dad was here, I don't think he would be sad to hear the news. I can't wait to tell my mom.

Yeah, no great loss. I'm sorry, I guess I'm not a very nice person after all.

My son messaged me the news, and commented that he never thought that Castro's death would be officially acknowledged. He'd simply fade away. While his death is not unexpected, and he won't be mourned by many outside his country, he did have a significant effect on how the world was during the Cold War.

I'll be honest - I thought he had died years ago.

I'll be honest - I thought he had died years ago. Same here. When I read the news I said to DH "am I the only one who thought he'd already died a while ago?"

Not that it was a shock, but it was a surprise. Last pictures I saw of him he looked so frail but he was still truckin' on.
One can hope that without the shadow of Fidel that Raul will mellow even more, but good gravy he's pretty up there too. I need to read up on who will take over when Raul goes.

I was in Cuba a few years ago during his birthday celebration.
We've been going on and off since the fall of the SU and the changes we've seen over that time have been fascinating.

I am Cuban born refugee who left when I was a year old. I can truly say my life would have been very different without him in this world. And I like my life, who I am now, however my parents did go through a lot of struggles and suffering because of him. He was a harsh dictator who hated Americans so all I can say is, about time, one less evil person in this world.

This is one of those times where if I am to follow my mother's rule "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." then I guess I'll just be quiet.
Aside from my own opinion of the man, though, I hope that this can be something somewhat healing to those whose lives were made painful and difficult because of him.

I have a college friend who was born in America shortly after her parents fled Cuba during the Revolution. Her dad was a doctor and became very successful in America. My friends' parents raised a niece and nephew in addition to their own two children. The parents of the niece and nephew were political prisoners in Cuba for many years (I think it was about twenty).
My friend's parents are elderly, but they have outlived Castro. I can't imagine the emotions Castro's death must have stirred up.

The Castro brothers have run Cuba forever and I don't think I've ever heard another name mentioned as a future leader. SaveSave
