If I remember correctly, you sometimes help out at an auction house? I have a question, and you might be able to help. I have a big old garage that has been used for storage-the kind where if I didn't know what to do with something, I threw it out in the garage and pretty much forgot about it. I am packing up my house to move and am completely overwhelmed by idea of having to deal with all. that. crap. Someone mentioned that I could call an auction house and they might come out and just take it (maybe even paying me a small amount.) My question is this-there isn't any great treasure out there. It is mostly not so important furniture (as in not antique) and stuff like Christmas decorations that I don't like and other random stuff. And like more than a few bugs. *shudder* Is this something an auction house would be interested in? Or are they going to laugh at me because there is likely no treasure just day to day stuff? I just want to get rid of the stuff with minimal work on my part. Lazy girl that I am.

I don't work for an auction house - but that's exactly what my Inlaws did with my MIL's mother's apartment. They came, they glanced at it, they paid $300, they took it all. Dressers to clothes to stainless steel spoons. Having grown up going to auctions- it's just the kind of stuff that was there.
I'm going to guess it depends on what kind of auction house you call.

You rang? The auction house I work with does everything. We do high end, complete estates. We do liquidations of store inventories. We do compilation auctions with items consigned from many different sellers. And, yes, we do what we call "clean outs" which is basically what you are talking about. The key is finding an auction house like ours. In your case, we would come and load up everything you want us to take. And leave the house/shed/area perfectly cleaned out. We'd take it to our auction house and unload it to sort though. Anything that could stand alone as an auction item would be tagged to do so. The remainder gets put into box lots -- like miscellaneous kitchen items or all random towels or tools & old extension cords. Our standard consignment rate is 20% (that varies by company). So if we sell a total of $1,000 worth of stuff for you -- your check would be $800. Just call and talk to an auction house or two. They'll quickly let you know if they are a fit for you or not. I wish we were there! What fun it would be to do an auction for you!

They came, they glanced at it, they paid $300, they took it all. We do occasionally buy outright, but usually not the stuff like OP is talking about. We do that more with large inventories of jewelry, coins, firearms, etc -- items that have more intrinsic value. Plenty of auction and/or variety type re-sellers do buy outright though. That's certainly an option as well.

It sure would be nice to deal with someone you know. (Oh, and as I call around, do you recommend using the term 'clear out' or asking what they would do with a garage full of stuff?)

Around here, many of the estate sale companies will do the same thing. There are a few who will haul the stuff off to a storefront they maintain, then run the estate sale from there. Just another option to investigate if you strike out with auction houses.

(Oh, and as I call around, do you recommend using the term 'clear out' or asking what they would do with a garage full of stuff?) There are no magic words and that's just what we call it. It's not an official term - lol. Just describe what you have. Virtually every company I know will come out and give you a no-strings-attached estimate of what you might get for what you have. Chances are the first company you call may be the only call you'll have to make.

When fIL died we called the same auction house that had sold him all of the giant hoard in his basement. They came, looked at the untouched box lots he had bought there from them, and said No Thanks, not even for free. Jerks! Lol. We ended up having to rent a dumpster (construction sized) and we filled it completely and still didn't empty that basement.
You could also try pickup by your local Salvation Army, DAV, or whatever places you have local; some will come and load all that up, but that varies by location.
I hope you get an auction house to do it for you, that would be wonderful!
