I'm going on a river cruise in the US soon. I know there will be some down time when my DH will probably be in the room sleeping. (He has Parkinson's.).
I start to get antsy if I don't have a craft project to work on. I was thinking of making and bringing card kits to work on in the library - and bringing lots of kits so I could invite people to make a card with me. I'd put a note on the table saying "Make a card with me" or something similar. Full disclosure, I'm a Fun Stampers Journey coach and would put my business card in each card kit.
(I would not be promoting FSJ in any other way. I'd say they could see some more project ideas on my blog which is listed on my card.)
What do you think? Would you make a card for free with someone on a cruise? Do you think the cruise director would stop me from essentially offering free make and takes?

I would take kits for me to do, not for others to do. Yes, the cruise activity director will likely put an end to your offering a free class. It is too easy to mistake it for a sanctioned cruise activity and if someone gets hurt in any way the ship has a liability to look out for. It also looks like the cruise line is endorsing the stamping company.

I've been on quite a few cruises and I do stop and talk to people who are reading a book I'm interested in or ask to see their knitting/craft project, but I would not join them to work on a project.
And to be honest I think the cruise staff would frown at you for offering an impromptu activity.
I say bring your kits, work on them yourself and if people stop and ask about them you can tell them about your business, but I would not offer a free kit or display a "make a card with me" sign -- unless of course you check with the cruise staff first. You don't want to be in competition with their activities.

Ugh... honestly if you have to ask and don't automatically see how inappropriate that is, it is inappropriate.
Make your cards, share if people ask, but leave out the business cards. ,,

Ah, ok. I pretty much figured that would be the reaction, but I wanted to see if there'd be other ideas. Thanks everyone!

What river are you cruising on and with which cruise line? I have done river cruises in Europe but not in the USA.

I 100% agree with the previous posts stating that the cruiseline would not want you doing anything that could be misinterpreted as being endorsed by the company.
However, if you want to do something because you get 'antsy' if you don't have a craft project on the go and if you want some genuine company while you do it, there is nothing wrong with getting to know a couple of people and mentioning to them that you will be making cards and do they want to join you - without the business card. If your priority is company while you craft, go about it the right way.
I get that every setting can offer a business opportunity, but I would also say that this is not the 'right' setting - enjoy the time with your husband, the experience and use crafting as a way to truly engage with others on a personal level. Who knows, one or two may approach you wanting to know more anyway.
As for 'would I make a card for free'? Totally, if I knew you and thought that you were just generous enough to share a little. Absolutely not if I thought you were trying to 'sell to me' in the longer term.
I hope you have a great time on your cruise - I've been thinking about doing a river cruise, but in Europe.

I'll just bring a few biz cards with me then, in case someone asks for one, and I'll bring the card kits with the hopes of making some new crafting friends.
