For many, many years I used the last quilt top my great grandmother ever pieced as our tree skirt. Because it wasn't quilted there wasn't a lot of bulk to deal with. Once I realized exactly how old it was, I finally put it away and now use a length of Christmas fabric instead. Oh,Gypsy! You should continue to use that sweet quilt top & tell your kids about your great grandma.... what else would it be used for? And eventually, your great grandkids won't understand because you won't be there to tell the story. I have the same problem with my grandma's quilts. I finally realized my grandma wanted me to USE them, not tuck them away.

We actually just use some burlap fabric. When we first got married, we had some leftover from a project and we just temporarily stuck it under the tree until we got around to purchasing a real tree skirt, but we ended up really liking it. Seven years later and we are still using it!

I finally realized my grandma wanted me to USE them, not tuck them away. It was beginning to show some signs of wear (loose seams, etc) so I decided to put it away for a while. But I agree they should be used! I think most of the older generation made them for use, not to display or as art works like many do today. We use nearly all of the old quilts that we have. I have close to 40 just from my grandmother...and 1 child who isn't as interested in them as I am. So I figure I need to use them now while I still can! Save

Whatever is under there, it is a cat magnet at our house and becomes the favored place for wrestling matches until gifts cover it.

Last year I used a 3 or 5 gallon crock for a smallish tree. It was cute. This year I have a 15 gallon crock with a round glass on top with tree on top of it. It isn't decorated yet but that's where it'll be this year, I think. And we are decorating it Star Wars this year. The star on top will be the Death Star with light saber garland I'm making and SW ornaments.
But the skirt on top of the glass, which was the original question (sorry) is going to be simple white (think Hoth) fleece or a piece of Star Wars fleece if they have something I like when I hit Joanns this week.

Oh, a table cloth. Good idea! Off to look around. This is what I currently use. I found a tablecloth that I loved at Walmart and bought the round shape. I cut a hole in the center (we have an artificial tree) and then made a slit up to the hole. I hemmed everything on my sewing machine, which only took a few minutes. It wraps perfectly around the tree, is relatively flat, and looks great. I've been super happy with it.

I used a plaid Christmas tablecloth for a couple of years. No photos though. It worked well!

I use a long piece of red and black plaid fabric just gathered around the base. It was left over from a Civil War repro gown I made. There are generally gifts piled up on it anyway, but I think it looks nice enough.

That picture you posted is really pretty. I don't us a blanket but I don't use a tree skirt either. I actually use a plain white cloth tablecloth. It looks like snow and is easy to clean. It was given to me as a gift but my table is too short and we aren't formal enough for tablecloths so I use it for the tree.

I'm trying to remember what blog I saw this on, but they used a white faux fur rug and wrapped it around the base of the tree. It looked great - very different, but great!

Dang what a dummy I am.. never thought of using something else other than a skirt.... I do have a skirt I actually found at a garage sale many years ago for $2. It's actually cute, not quite what I would really want but for $2 bucks, it works. The presents cover it anyway.

I actually found a giant rectangle shaped piece of white faux fur today at the thrift store for $2.99. I was going to use it as snow for my Christmas Village. Maybe I'll lay it out tomorrow and see what I can do
