I'm still settling into my new craft room and I have the Ikea Alex 6 drawer set that I want to keep right by my desk. To give you an idea of what I have- picture leftovers from Studio Calico kits: random bits and bobs, and small amounts of different things but not a lot of any one thing. I've thought about the theory of "organize stuff the way you would use it. What do you look for?" I would probably say "I'm looking for a wood veneer" or "I need something yellow to tie this together." I think I should try to sort by general color (reds/yellows, blues/greens, neutrals) which worked for me in the past but on a smaller scale- do you think it makes any sense to have a "blue/green drawer" in the Alex? (If not, what do I do with a package of something that's a mix of colors, like enamel dots?! That would keep me up at night!) Do any of you sort all types of embellishments by color and if so, how does that work for you? I'd love to hear it! Thanks in advance for your advice- I am so excited about my new room but the chaos surrounding me is preventing me from enjoying being in here!

I can't really help because I am still evolving in that regard, but GLEVE is designed for the Alex and might help you separate things when you figure ot all out.
I have color embellishments sorted in 4x6 photo boxes and NEVER touch them. So color doesn't work for me. Manufacturer would probably work better for my needs as I tend to keep things by collection (if it isn't stored this way, there is a good chance that I won't touch it because I forget about it).

I have most of my scrapbook supplies divided into DIY kits. So when I bring new items in I build kits that I think work well together. These are what I go to first. I find a kit that I think works well with my pictures and get to work.
If I don't feel like I have enough to work with I then grab color bins that are just full of goodies. If I think I need something pink it's not hard to find something in the pink bin. The color bins not only help me build kits, but help me quickly finish a layout that may not be coming together.
It may not work for everyone, but it's how I think.

I have my embellishments organised by type rather than colour because that's how I think about them. I also pre-sort things into kits to make it easy to grab an envelope and have things ready to go.

I think you are on the right track, ellewood, organizing by how you will be using the materials. I tend to scrap in seasonal binges, so I would put my FALL colours into one spot; then WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER and CHRISTMAS. Right now, I tend to store the dots & stickers, etc with the paper packs, but I DO have separate spots for wood veneer, metal embellishments, washi tape, and--although I don't use nearly as many as I seem to have collected--ribbon, twine, brads & eyelets, & flowers.

The only embellishments I store by color miscellaneous pieces left from sticker sheets or other collection items. I keep wood veneer together, as well as brads, flair, buttons, etc.
I love my Alex drawers.
The top drawer is for adhesive, adhesive remover, stapler, staples, tape - most often used supplies.
Drawers 2 & 3 have punches.
Drawer 4 has ribbon.
Drawer 5 has miscellaneous stuff in little plastic baskets. This includes wood veneer and frames.
Drawer 6 has my CM circle cutters and miscellaneous tools.

I have tried all of the things you mention, but none of them has really worked for me. Most of the time, I just reach in a drawer, stir stuff around and something will catch my eye, and I use it. I'm trying to kick the perfectionist habit!

For my embellishment drawers by color, for small loose items (like brads, eyelets, buttons, etc.) I keep them in a small clear plastic divided box within the drawer. The enamel dots cut into strips by color and put them in the correct drawer. Just like I have a metals drawer, I also have a wooden drawer and a naked chipboard drawer. I treat them as colors. Hope you find something that works for you!
eta: One f the best things about my drawers is that I can pull the drawer out and place it on my desktop to dig through it to see what I have. Can you do that with the Alx drawers? I do think I'd want to be bent over digging through the drawer looking for a 'bit of blue'.

I got the 5 drawer Alex about a month ago. I really like it but wish that all of the drawers were as deep as the lower drawers. I bought 4 plastic divided trays at IKEA to put in them and they only fit in the lower drawers and the trays really are only just over 3 inches deep. 4 was perfect - 2 per lower 2 drawers. The trays were only about 3 bucks each. I put tags in one, pockets, lace/fabric/ fancy. The upper more shallow drawers - One drawer is all minc type things, one is Cricut things.
I store my embellishments by type. It would drive me crazy if they were stored by color and all different types mixed together. I have a few baggies of things by color match I got in a swap maybe 10 years ago and I never even look at them. However I have made iris boxes of some themes - Christmas, travel, sports. Those I pull out when focusing on those themes.

Congratulations on your new space!
I prefer to organize embellishments by type because it's more uniform, easy to sort, etc.. (Storing by color means items of various sizes/functions/materials are together, which seems chaotic, visually unappealling, & still disorganized to me.)
Happy organizing...

I have color drawers that I love. Mine are 2 cubes of 3 drawers from Ms. I use baggies to keep some things together like brads, dots, ribbon pieces. Other stuff is in baskets that I can pull out. For me ot wprks really well. Unfortunately I don't have a drawer for my wood veneer so I frequently forget about them.
