I'm so sorry about your pets and your home. My best friend's house completely burned down 2 years ago. The advice she would give is to not rush everything. The inventory takes forever and you should give yourself all the time you need to figure out what was in every drawer and closet. As far as your clothes go, just get new ones. State Farm is a great company to deal with.
Can you tell me what your favorite Little Golden Books were? I was thinking about parting with some and would be happy to send you a few! PM me your name and address please.
And as far as all the people helping you-accept their help. They want to do it! Hugs to you.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your fur babies, as well as everything else. I know there was a pea who had a house fire and lost everything, but I cannot remember her name. Maybe she'll see this thread and have some good advice for you.
Again, you have my deepest condolences.

Oh my god!!! You sound like you are still in serious shock to me. My first thought to you is for you to take some time and just not think about this. I have not gone through a fire, but my neighbor did and she had young kids. It took her three months I think to completely rebuild and by the end she was very happy with how things turned out. I am so sorry about your animals. And everything else! Just because I had to clean a smoked up house out before, I don't think the clothes are worth it.it sounds like you did the smart thing and calling a restoration company. Many good thoughts and prayers with you right now.

I'm so sorry for your loss of home and family pets. I have no advice, but do remember being a little kid when our house burned down, so I have few baby pictures.

I am so sorry this happened. I don't have any words of wisdom in dealing with the aftermath, but I do want you to know I'll be thinking of and praying for you as you start the recovery process. I'm so glad your community has supported you in such helpful ways.

I am so sorry - what terrible losses. I agree with the advice to not rush into any decisions, and also to think about letting go of things that can be easily replaced.

I am so sorry, we went through something similar when I was a kid, but thankfully my sister was home and got the animals out.
10 of us lived at the Holiday Inn for 6 weeks in two rooms. Yuck.
I was 13 but it has been discussed a lot in my family it was a big part of our history.
So for those of you who have the gone through this: Is it worth going through closets and having clothes sent to be desmoked? Does it work? Yes it worked. It is worth doing Is it worth going through all my (extensive) crafting closets and documenting all the supplies etc?I would think to try and save tools etc, but I imagine the paper will never be useable. Document, Document, Document everything has a value. I'm talking one big closet full of all my sewing/jewelry making/painting/needlework/and every other craft known to man supplies as well as a scrapbook room with cabinets full of supplies. How would I begin to estimate the value of everything, let alone remember everything I have in there. We had to estimate in the 1970's but use the internet. There is no way you will be able to remember/list everything but take the time to try and list everything you can. If you have any video footage or pictures they will help you remember things. I have an extensive collection of old childrens books and Little Golden Books. They will always smell of smoke, right? Advice on how to just let it all go? or is there an alternative solution? Before you get rid of them do you research you may find someone who can help with that. After Hurricanne Ivan I know a lot of people who just trashed their computers, but I also know a lot who were able to send their hard drives off and get priceless photos off of them. (different scenario I know but there might be some hope) How will I handle the next 6 to 8 months of living in "not my home"....We were out for 6 weeks, and it sucked. It will be hard.
I am so sorry you are going through this. Come here for support.

Is it worth going through all my (extensive) crafting closets and documenting all the supplies etc? I'm talking one big closet full of all my sewing/jewelry making/painting/needlework/and every other craft known to man supplies as well as a scrapbook room with cabinets full of supplies. How would I begin to estimate the value of everything, let alone remember everything I have in there. I'm so very, very sorry for the loss of your home, but especially your pets. Such a heartbreaking thing to go through. About 40 years ago I lost everything in a fire while at college, but it in no way compares to the loss of an entire home and beloved pets. You are most likely in adrenaline fueled overdrive now, but please be aware that you may experience a 'crash' in the coming days or months when things begin to settle down. Please make sure you have someone who can talk you through that phase and just be there for support. (((hugs))) As for your question, if you can you do need to document everything. You have no idea how quickly it is going to add up. The quickest thing is to to take photographs of everything, then sit down and make your list from there. Your insurance agent should be able to give you guidelines on how much detail they want, as well as pricing advice. The last time I had to make a detailed inventory for a move, I spent a lot of time on the internet price checking. For vintage items, you can use eBay or Etsy as price guides. Do you have family or friends who would be willing to help you with the price searches? That would be something you could ask those people who are offering to help to do for you.
