My 7 year old "won" a Pokemon card yesterday, from his OT teacher. Now he wants more, his logic is "It's not fun trading with my friends if I only have one card." So at least he's being logical... Anyway his 1/2 birthday is tomorrow (which he reminds me 10,000 times a day) so I thought I'd get him a pack. I have no idea what kind of cards are what, and they only seem to come in $12 packs.
Anyone want to educate me on Pokemon so I get the right type of cards?
Thanks!

I have no idea what the significance of the cards are or what times do what. I'm not sure my 8 year old real does, either. He just picks a pack and has fun seeing what's inside. There usually are $4-5 packs as well at target and Walmart. Sometimes look by the register or the game section.

The only thing I know about them is that my sons are 28 and 31 and I still have a box of them in my attic

Not a lot of kids my son's age trade them - they battle them though.
We get the small packs at Target where they have all the football, soccer & other cards (not in the toy area but by the registers).
The mega EX's are preferred by my son.
Charizard, Lunala, Solgoleo are popular ones.

Target sells packs for as little as 4.99 or even 4.19. I buy those for DS. And for my older DS if he wants some right now. If there is time to wait, you may be able to find a bug old pile of used ones or picked over ones on Amazon or ebay. I figure the cards I give to my first grader are going to get beat to heck, lost, and traded away. So it doesn't matter how good they are or if they are new or expensive or not.
