I was a teenager / in my early 20s back in the 80s. The other day I was telling a girl at work that I wished banana clips were back in fashion, because I loved the way they made my fine hair look so much thicker. (FTR she had no idea what I was talking about - she's about 7 years younger than I am and clearly never wore banana clips.) Then today I noticed kelly316 's profile pic and got nostalgic all over again!

Oh, and spiral perms! I'd love to have a perm again. The last time I had a perm was 1997 when I was pregnant with DD. I had to BEG my hairdresser to do it for me. She only caved in when I did the whole sob story about how hard it would be to look after my hair with a newborn.

Yes!! I loved banana clips. And I adore Neon so much. I guess in a way neon, done right, is in style but I want to see more of it. I have a Pinterest board of gorgeous neon!

I have a ton of thick, curly hair. Banana clips were the only thing that ever held it back. I would love for them to be back in style.

Scrunchies.
I have thick, wavy/curly hair, and the looser softness of a scrunchie always worked better for my ponytails.
I did see some at Urban Outfitters recently, so that gave me hope!

Ah, spiral perms! I never had one, because I have hair thick enough for 19 people and a few animals to share, making it rather difficult to get it to do anything you ask it to do. But man, I loved those perms on other people.

I also have fine, thin hair and I wouldn't mind if perms came back. It was on the list of things to do before school started! I've heard about body perms and kind of want one! I was a bigger fan of 90's fashion.

I loved all the good tv movies and miniseries back then (now that I am older maybe I wouldn't be as impressed?) and also the juicy books some of them were based on:
North and South North and South Book 2 The Day After Lonesome Dove I Know My First Name Is Steven East of Eden The Blue and the Gray War and Remembrance The Winds of War The Burning Bed Hollywood Wives The Two Mrs. Grenvilles Murder In Texas Lace Lace 2 Scruples The Executioner's Song The Thornbirds Desperate Lives A Death In California V I'll Take Manhattan

Kilts and monogrammed sweaters- my preppy look back then. I wore them all the time in HS and still have them here in a trunk. Of course, I'd probably wear them anyway if they still fit!

Paper boys! I was talking to a twenty-something at work and mentioned I missed when we had an afternoon newspaper and the neighborhood boys delivered it after school. It was often a kids first job. I called them kid-carriers and my co-worker had no idea what that was.

I was obsessed with boat shoes. I have seen them back in style, but they don't have the colors I loved. I had 15 pair in '82. I worked at the mall and couldn't resist.

So...umm...I'm wearing a scrunchie in my hair right now. I make my own. I have the same kind of hair and it's how I have been putting it up every night before I go to bed since the 80's. heeheehee Just typing that made me so embarrassed for my lack of progressiveness in the "hair back in a ponytail" regime.

I am not being rude and unkind when I say this....but it always baffles me, when I hear this kind of commentary. You're not wearing something or achieving a particular look, because others have deemed it "not in style". I just don't understand why? Individuality is what makes you who you are. If you're doing what everyone else is doing, then it's all the same. If you're not doing what you want, then you're not really be you, your authentic self. To each, their own. If you like something, wear it, do it, use it. Or, lack thereof...whatever the latest bandwagon is, doesn't mean everyone has to get on it. Do want you want, not what you think society deems is the thing to do, or lack thereof.
I don't care what anyone else thinks. I live my life, my way. If you like me wonderful, if you don't then feel free to excuse yourself from my life. I wear what I like and what I want, and vice-versa. If someone else doesn't like it, then whatever.
If you want to wear a banana clip or get a spiral perm, then do so. Don't worry about other peoples judgement.

Hammer pantsI don't like the way they look, but sooooooo comfy! I did like the preppy look, though - and it made getting dressed so EASY in the morning.

It's too bad we can't go back to the 80's Bill Cosby.*
*I know he was not truly good then, but it's rather thinking he was a good guy and we could watch the Cosby Show without cringing.

AussieMeg ....Girlllll....if those clips made you happy AND made your hair look better---GO GET SOME, and ENJOY them! Don't worry if something isn't "in style"....life is too short! I'm trying to think of anything I miss.....thinking back to some of the things I wore (like shoulder pads!) plus, my BIG HAIR , omg--and stone-washed jeans!!! ---Hmmm...I don't miss 'em! Although I DID like that shoulder pads gave blouses, dresses, and jackets a nice shape, and IF I missed any of these things, I'd still wear 'em ! I like to look nice; but I've never cared about being trendy.

I think we should meet up and have a mini-series marathon and book club event! I love all of the same ones!!! Sounds good to me! We may have to go back to the 70's and also watch the miniseries that started it all for me, I was just a kid but my Mom watched it and I was hooked.... "RICH MAN POOR MAN".

If you want to wear a banana clip or get a spiral perm, then do so. Don't worry about other peoples judgement. Oh trust me, if I could find any banana clips I would buy one. They are not in style which means nobody sells them. It's supposed to be a fun thread, not a serious vent about me worrying about being judged.

Truthfully, style-wise, banana clips would be the only thing that I would consider a possiblility. The rest of the 80s style -- just say no!

Don't forget Irwin Shaw's "Evening in Byzantium" (as the tv commercial always breathlessly announced) or "Shaka Zulu". Actually, I never watched either of these but I remember a local Los Angeles station advertising them heavily.
