What works for you when you have lower back pain? I have pain in the middle of my lower back (around the backbone). I didn't do anything specifically that made it hurt. I haven't worked out in a long time, but went to the gym last Tues. and may have overdid it a bit (meaning walked longer and faster than I should have first time out). I did some weights too. Also under some stress last week and maybe stress can do it?
I went to urgent care today and was given a prescription for flexirol and for physical therapy. I feel like I need to walk stooped over! The doctor says it sounds like a muscle sprain or spasm.

I did three months of physical therapy plus core strengthening exercises and stretches at home ever since. I was really surprised by how much it helped/helps.

Was your back pain in the center or side? What did you do to injure your back? My back feels like I need to "curl" up for pain relief to relieve that "arched" back feeling. I know this sounds crazy!

I know exactly what you are describing. I have degenerative disc disease and have chronic pain like you are describing. The heating pad helps mine.
Stretching helps too....stand with your feet together and bend over making your back flat and put your hands on your knees. Your back should be flat enough you can look forward, say at the TV or something in front of you. You should feel it pull in your lower back.
Another thing that helps is while standing, turn your toes in and then side step about 10 times while holding your toes inward and then side step in the other direction. My fitness trainer says that loosens up those back and hip muscles.
HTH and that you feel better quickly!

Due to my scoliosis I have lower back pain and have for years. The best things for me are my chiropractor, strengthening my core (slowly), stretching and ice (not heat) My back hurts more when I'm stressed, it seems stress settles in my lower back. Some times my back will hurt more then normal before I will realize that I'm stressed about something. I also have back aches instead of cramps each month. And I always had back labor.

I have osteoarthritis at L4, L5 and S1 and weak stomach muscles after having a C-section almost 7 years ago. Back pain is mostly at the center. I had been seeing a chiro for about 4 years at that point and he resolved all of my other back pain except that. I had a particularly bad episode a year ago and went to see a PCP. She did x-rays and saw some narrowing of the joint space there, but thought physio would be the best option to start since it wasn't too bad yet. After getting the OA diagnosis, I told my chiro about it and he started adjusting my lower back differently and that has helped some too. I was surprised that many of the stretches that the PT recommended are actually for the legs and SI joint. She said that when those muscles get too tight they can adversely affect your lower back too.

Chiropractor has been a life saver for me. I have severe degenerative disc disease in my lower back and neck, and I lived with excruciating pain for a around 7 months before I finally dragged myself to a chiropractor. My back is not perfect, but, it is so much better.
I need to get a prescription for Flexeril. I have taken it before, and it was very helpful, too.
Best of luck! Erin

I don't like ice because I'm always cold I forgot I also have an awesome heating pad with massage. That massage is so nice. I just don't use the heat any more.

Thanks for all the back advice!
Gmcwife, that is interesting about stress causing back pain. I am very irrationally squeamish about back things. I have been since I was a kid. I can't have anyone touch my back or touch someones back. I use spray sunscreen for my husband and the kids backs at the beach. Well, my 17 yr. old hurt her back at dance last Wed. night. My husband was out of town, so I took her to the Children's Hosp. ER as our doctor told me to do. I was very stressed about my daughter worried that she did something really wrong. When the doctor was examining her and doing back/nerve evaluations, I had to leave the room. I thought I was going to pass out. I found a place to sit down and was very dizzy. Crazy! But I think that stress and worrying about her may have been a related to my back pain. My daughter ended up with a muscle sprain and is feeling better! She does these chin stand and contorsion stuff that I cannot watch.
