My dh is a SVP in HR and has 12 females and that report to him. He would like to give them each a gift in the $30 range. Last year he gave them each 2 nice bottles of wine. This year we would like to keep it simple and go the gift card route with a nice handwritten card. Curious if his budget is $30 per person, and last year he gave 2 "nice" bottles of wine, how much was the wine?

Here's a helpful thread. I would love a sephora gift card but many some people wouldn't or think its sexist. My office has so many 40+ women who do not wear makeup, not sure what the culture is like in his office? They don't wash their hair or use soap? Perfume? Not everything has to be foundation and lip gloss.

I like Amazon.
Perhaps your mall has a gift certificate that can be used at any store there - that gives some variety and allows for different tastes.

Put me on the bench for the more generic cards (Target, Amazon) or just plain cash. Personally I prefer the cash because then there are no restrictions whatsoever as to what I can use it on or where I can use it. Like I said in the other thread, it's always the right size, always the right color and I can't think of anybody who complains about getting it.
Honestly, I've never even stepped inside a Sephora. I can't remember the last time I was in a mall and I live in an area surrounded by them.

I would suggest Target, Walmart or Amazon. Sephora is just asking someone to be offended. Some people may not like going to the movies. Everyone can find something at Target or Walmart or Amazon. I understand but disagree with what someone said about Amazon could be bad because they may have to pay for shipping. Well, any gift card could "force" someone to pay for something if it doesn't cover the exact amount of the item.
The couple of times we've been given a Visa gift card it was a pain if we didn't spend it all in one place. We had to keep track of the balance & it had to be keyed in just so by the cashiers (who usually had never seen one.) Now that could be the type of Visa gift card we got & others could be better.

Not everything has to be foundation and lip gloss. I think Sephora is overpriced and I get super overwhelmed in there so while I wouldn't complain about a GC from there, it's not a store I normally shop at and it would probably either not be used or regifted. Thanks to young kids, I haven't been in a movie theatre in a few years so that is something my DH would use before I would. Restaurants are a crap shoot too. Go as generic as possible so that would mean Amazon, Target, or Visa prepaid card. This is why my company just gives cash every Christmas. My kid's school has teachers fill out a gift preference questionnaire each year and it is AMAZINGLY helpful to avoid all the generic gifts that people tend to give when they just don't know. They ask everything from favorite sports team/color/flower/beverage/restaurant and if they had a spare day to themselves what would they would do. Maybe your DH could have his direct reports fill out something like that the beginning of the year?

Does he only have females that report to him or does he want to do something for the male vs female employees?
I'd go neutral like Target or Amazon.

Target. They can order online or go to the store. The bigger, newer Targets by me also have Starbucks inside them, which accept Target and SB gcs. So someone who wants coffee or a snack can use the Target gc there.

I would do something gender neutral particularly coming from a man. Amazon or Visa

I'd stick with Target, Amazon or a restaurant. I personally would love the Sephora gift card but know many people who wouldn't. Sephora can be a bit pricey and there aren't many things you can buy in the $30 range. Some of the travel size stuff is under $25 but some people wouldn't like to buy small lipsticks, masks, etc. At least with Target, you can buy makeup if you want to but also books, DVDs, a cute sweater, grocery items, etc.

Not everything has to be foundation and lip gloss. No my non-makeup wearing co-workers do not wear perfume to work and have basic wash and go hair, I don't know if they'd be into pricey shampoo. $30 doesn't get you far at Sephora, especially with perfume. Not everyone wants to use scented philosophy body wash. They wouldn't get both shampoo and a conditioner for $30. Body wash runs $20 a bottle. I'm in there every month but I imagine if you're not familiar with the store it would be a pain to go there and then be overwhelmed.

Another idea is Trader Joes, if you have one near you. Most people I know like shopping there and it is more fun than a regular grocery store, at least to me.

$30 seems appropriate to me. One way to make it stretch is buy it from somewhere they would likely shop anyways--either a grocery store, Walmart, Amazon. Someplace universal. Sephora--maybe not everyone shops there (I don't) and the ones who don't might be annoyed to have to go there.
We got a grocery card for a wedding gift and I used it to buy thanksgiving dinner then photographed it for the scrapbook. We also got a Walmart card and I bought kitchen appliances.

Could he have someone discretely ask around about favorite places? Or, maybe get ten movie cards, ten gas cards, ten Amazon cards, etc, and let people pick?

I'm clearly a still grumpy Scrooge. I don't think individual gifts is appropriate. The relationship is professional, not friendship. Bring in lunch or take everyone out... a group gift.

Visa gift card or Amazon. That's about it. You can give a $25 dollar Visa one with the fee that's about $30. some banks will do the visa gift cards free if you have an account. TD had done this in the past

As I put on another thread, I think giving alcohol as an office gift is a bad idea. Chances are more than one person in a group doesn't drink, has an alcohol problem or in my case, I have an allergy to alcohol where even in food I have a bad reaction. Now I don't expect a boss to be aware of everyone's drinking habits or preferences, but frankly, I consider that no one's business in a business setting.
Cater a nice lunch and let people have a half day off after the party. That's a gift most people could enjoy.

We had a competition at work today and my team won. They gave Starbucks cards. Aaarrggghhh. I have several in my wallet already. But you won't please everyone, I would go with the movie gc because most people go to the movies or if they don't it would be super easy to regift.

Amazon, Target or the Movies! Sephora is pretty expensive, but Amazon and Target have lots of things for lots of interests. SaveSave

Also if you have children check into if any of their activities have a scripp program those gift cards have minimum ( or no ) fees and benefit the activity. A good way to get more bang for your buck.

Totally agree with target or amazon. I would love a GC from either of those! (Too bad you weren't shopping a few days ago as target just had 10% off gift card purchases on Sunday only!)

based on the replies here it seems like you're never going to please anyone. A gift card is basically plastic money, and the $ amount is printed on the cards, so it's not like it's a mystery - so why not just cut to the chase and give them the actual money? There's plenty of websites/pinterest etc that can give you ideas on how to do this in a creative/fun/cute way. One I just saw was money folded into Christmas trees with a sign "[husband's name] Christmas tree lot LINK then you could add something like: "please select your tree for Christmas" etc. Or put the money in little coin purses and add a note about "having a little splurge on us - see a film, go out to eat, buy some coffee or a little make-up treat" Or get those clear /craft Christmas ornaments designed to put your own things into - put the money in that and add a gift tag with each lady's name. Something along those lines. Don't just put money in a Christmas card, but do something just a little fun with it (nothing overboard though) - that way everyone can get what they want/need. For someone it might mean an extra toy for their kid for Christmas.

Something like Darden which is several restaurants including Olive Garden and Bahama Breeze. It also was still including Red Lobster (at least a few months ago) even though they don't own them now. There are about five or so restaurants to choose from at different price points so there are a number of restaurants from which to choose.

One or two would be a difficult task, pleasing 12 seems impossible. I would love a Sephora gift card, but never use one from a movie theatre.
Instead of gift cards would it be possible to take them out to lunch one day, or have lunch catered?

A restaurant they frequent for lunch or get togethers would be nice gesture, or something more generic as others have said (Target, Vida, Amazon or B&N).
I think this must be one of those times where my experience doesn't align with OP's, my reaction is so different. Sephora would be seen as patronizing by a male boss to his female employees/team/coworkers. And alcohol given by someone who works in HR? That would NEVER happen- I can't even compute that.
