My dh is a SVP in HR and has 12 females and that report to him. He would like to give them each a gift in the $30 range. Last year he gave them each 2 nice bottles of wine. This year we would like to keep it simple and go the gift card route with a nice handwritten card.
What gift card would you like to receive from your boss? I suggested Sephora since I think most females could find something there they use or want. $30 doesn't seem like enough for a restaurant or the movies, or is it?
Any other suggestions?

Visa gift card or Amazon. That's about it. You can give a $25 dollar Visa one with the fee that's about $30.

Here's a helpful thread. I would love a sephora gift card but many some people wouldn't or think its sexist. My office has so many 40+ women who do not wear makeup, not sure what the culture is like in his office?

I would love a $30 gift card for the movies! I also like the Amazon idea. Target would be good, too.

Amazon. I'd stay away from makeup and personal things like Bath and Body works. Personally, I'm not a Sephora fan. I could find something there but it would not be a preference.

Amazon, Target or the Movies!

Movies, if everyone lives fairly close to the same chain Could do a restaurant, centrally located. It wouldn't cover a meal for 2, but it would at least cover the employee plus a bit more.
No makeup, candles, lotion, Starbuck's (unless he knows everyone likes it - I don't actually know many people who DO like it!)

I agree with Amazon (there is just about everything anyone would want or need there) - I also like the Target idea too.

I like the movie idea. A popular restaurant would be nice, too.

I hate going to the movies.
I think you should aim for something generic. VISA would be best. Second vote would be for big box type place - Amazon, target.

I think that's a lot of people to try to please all with the same card. Some of them may not like going to the movies (I know I don't) and some may not be into cosmetics/nails and what have you. Yes there are facial masks and conditioners and other things at Sephora but it still runs the risk of not getting used. Restaurants are tricky because some might have specific food issues or just not like certain places. Really it's a crap shoot anyway you go. You could give a WM gift card and some of them have a problem with WM's clientele or business practices or give a Target card and someone doesn't like their politics. I'm not certain it's possible to please everyone but you need something that has the best chance of being used. Hmm...
A GC to a spa or salon for a foot rub or facial mask?
Is there a favored restaurant near work that he knows about?
What about just a GC for a particular shopping center/mall which can then be used at any of hundreds of stores? I used to get those and loved the freedom it provided.

I'd go VERY generic and get the Visa card. I hate the thought of giving someone a gift card to a place like Amazon or other online retailer. Depending on the size of the card, they might have to use some of it for shipping (if they don't have Prime) or throw some of their own money in to boost up to free shipping. I don't like giving a GC to someone that makes them spend their own money on top of it.

I would love a Visa card. They can use it for groceries, gas or the treat of their choice. Second choice Amazon, but not a specific store unless it's a big department store.

I agree with something general, like Visa or Amazon. Or if that's problematic, how about a comp day? I love getting extra time off.

I'd go with Amazon or Target, because of the fee on Visa.

Don't Visa and American Express gift cards have fees? I like Target gift cards, but that isn't as much fun as a restaurant or movies. Maybe a mall gift certificate so the recipient can choose where to shop?

This thread illustrates why I hate trying to come up with staff gifts. Someone is unhappy or even insulted, no matter what I do. This year, I decided to just take everyone out for a nice lunch. The company will do a small gift as well.

When I'm doing gift cards I usually try to support a local independent business if it's a place someone can easily patronize - a local restaurant or deli, coffee shop, etc.

I think that no matter what you do, someone isn't going to be happy so I would just pick something and call it a day.
I had someone who always got me gift cards to Publix. Every time I got one I would kind of roll my eyes at how ... dunno ... boring? it was. Right up until I swiped that thing and got to use to offset the cost of all that holiday baking/cooking I ended up having to do and was happy as a little clam to have it.
So maybe a gift card to a gas place or a grocery store is boring, but probably would be well used.
(Sometimes you can also get a discount for buying in bulk, so maybe check into that?)

Amazon. I'd stay away from makeup and personal things like Bath and Body works. Personally, I'm not a Sephora fan. I could find something there but it would not be a preference. I would strongly advise you staying away from speciality stores like Sephora and Bath and Body Works. I was working for a company that gave all the female employees little baskets from Bath and Body Works with lotions, soaps, perfumes, etc. Mine was peach. I hated the smell and gave it away. I have my own lotions that I prefer and also do not like to wear scents to the office because it can annoy others. If I do use anything that has a bit of a fragrance, I do so very, very sparingly so as to avoid irritating someone who has to sit in my vicinity. I can't tell you how bad that office smelled with a mixture of peach, lemon, strawberry, celery (?!?), freesia, etc. It was overpowering and offensive. But it was something from the company, so those of us who didn't like the meshing of all the different smells had to just suck it up until people either got tired of it or ran out. The same woman who chose all the fragrance baskets chose live beta fish the following year. As if I didn't have enough to deal with during my work day, I was now responsible for feeding a fish and keeping its bowl clean. I couldn't take it home because I had cats. It was not received well by the majority of the women. I personally ended up giving my fish to one of my coworkers. He kept it in his office and adored having it. He didn't like the name I had for it though. I called it Sushi. He changed it. This woman was relieved of the responsibility of choosing the gift after the fish episode due to too many complaints. The gifts became generic gift certificates and everyone was happy. SaveSave

My MIL gave me spa gift cards for years; I'd accrued a few hundred dollars worth at one point. When they were about to expire, I finally went online and traded them for an ecard to a generic store, taking a 25% or so hit. It was worth it, though, to get a card to someplace I'd actually shop. And I did finally let MIL know that the spa cards were not my cup of tea.
Spas, make-up, candles, Starbucks, specific restaurants, movies, and all that stuff are way too personal for a gift idea for group of people.
I'd stick with something VERY generic: VISA/MasterCard, Amazon, Target, even the local grocery store (our Kroger's has store gift cards)

Amazon or Target, I dislike those Visa gift cards. First, they cost money to buy, then they can be hard to use if the store you shop at doesn't have the software to split a charge.

Amazon or Target. I don't wear much makeup, bath and body stuff makes me sneeze etc. Pretty much everyone can use stuff from Amazon or Target.

On another thread several of suggested cold hard cash- the gift that fits everyone. My boss gives us Barnes and Noble gift cards and at least 3 of us regift them, not because we don't like books - we love them, but usually finding something to spend it on takes time we just don't have. I get most of my books from amazon or the library. My coworker and I usually give ours to our spouses who are both teachers.
Get a roll of gold dollars or something if you want to mix it up a bit.

If they all live locally, I like the idea of a local business. Our downtown actually sells gift cards that are good for the entire downtown business area which has loads of great restaurants & shops.
If not, Amazon is my fallback. I love to have a big old Amazon gift card balance on my account!

It's a gift. He can only try his best. The point is not to give them exactly what they need / want but to give something he thinks they'd appreciate.
Sephora doesn't just sell make up or perfume, it also sells moisturizer, shampoo, cosmetic cases and many items. A woman could find something she didn't even know she wanted. At the same time is it strange for a male supervisor to give his female workers a sephora card? Maybe.
By getting an amazon card you're assuming that the women order items on line. As long as he thinks that's ok.
I love movie g/c. I also think a popular every thing type restaurant is always a good idea around the holidays.
Is there a popular lunch place close to work?
I also think you can't go wrong with a book store g/c.
Paige.
