I am seriously considering getting a roomba to help keep our hardwood floors cleaner, My hubby is going to crap at the expense, but with 4 dogs + 3 teens and 1000+ sq feet of hardwood floors, I can not keep up some weeks. I am sweeping 2xs a week and sometimes every day. I have a few questions though I am hoping some of you can help me with.
Which roomba do you have? Do you feel like the roomba cleans well? even picking up the little stuff / dust? or do you feel like you still need to sweep / swiffer sometimes?
It says it only covers about 300 sqft per running time.. Do you have more space than that? Our whole 1st floor is wood, 300 sqft is not a lot. If you have more space than 300 sqft, do you feel like it cleans enough? Our floor plan is very open, So moving it from room to room would not be an option for me.
Any thing you really love or really hate about it?
TIA!!!

My Roomba is hanging out in the basement at the moment, so I can't tell you the number. I can tell you that it does a fantastic job on our hardwood floors that run through the kitchen, dining, and front entry way. Not sure if the square footage, but it has no problem doing all the hardwood in those rooms in one shot.
We do have 3 rooms off those areas, living room, play room, and library. For those rooms I actually "lock" Roomba in there so that it can only focus on those single areas at a time. Otherwise it would run all over the house trying to clean all the rooms at the same time.
I am very satisfied with how well Roomba cleans the floors. It gets all the stuff on the floors. I do have to follow up with the broom in the corners, but there's very little in those corners. Roomba is round, so it's hard for it to grab the stuff in the corners. It does have this little sweepy arm that reaches out to brush things in front of the machine so it can suck them up, but it doesn't reach all the way into the corners.
I love our Roomba! It is my favorite appliance. My parents got it for us last year for Christmas. It's fantastic! In the event it ever needs replacing I will not hesitate to shell out the money for a new one!

I don't have one but have been thinking of getting one. That said, I work with this guy who is like our own personal Consumer Reports person. He has tested all the "robot vacuums" and he says that the Neato one is way better than the Roomba. It is square on one side so it gets in the corners that the round Roomba can't. It's the same price as Roomba, but BB&B excludes Roomba from their coupon but not Neato.

We've had a Roomba for about 4 years and love it. I think it is actually much better on hard surface floors than carpets. It just doesn't have enough sucking power to pull the stuff up out of carpets. That said, there are definitely some other bot vacuums out now that are rated very well, if not higher than Roombas and many of them are less expensive. I would definitely buy another one, but will look at other brands too.
For battery, ours seems to run about 90 minutes on a full charge. Our house is about 3200 sq ft, but I close off the carpeted rooms so I would guess it covers about 1700 sq ft of hard floor. It isn't on any kind of set pattern...it's like a june bug appliance. Moves about until it bumps into something, then just turns a little and keeps going so there are sometimes areas where it doesn't do as well because it has wasted time elsewhere randomly bumping about.
Overall, it's a lifesaver for the dog hair tumbleweeds that our two dogs profusely scatter throughout the house.

I just recently got a german shepherd which apparently are major shedders! My dog had some medical work done before I got him where they shaved him, so his hair is not fully grown in yet. I need to get one before his coat grows back!

I have a Roomba. Not sure of the number but, it came from Costco a couple of years ago.
It is a timesaver for sure. It does a pretty good job. As mentioned above it does have the flight plan of a gnat, it doesn't methodically vacuum like we do. It goes here and there, bumps into things and goes this way bumps into something else and goes another way. Sometimes it gets the whole room other times it misses part.
It definitely does a better job than I do, I can't vacuum every day! I clean on the weekends and I run my regular vacuum then.

We just got our 2nd one after about 3-4 years. We LOVE Roomba. We do the same as above regarding closing off rooms. But our foyer, dining and great room are all open. Costco has one on sale for $350 until the end of the month.

We've had ours for years, so it's definitely an older model, but we love it. We don't have hardwood, we have tile and our floor plan is open too. Much of the rooms are carpeted so we let it do just certain tiled areas at a time and I think it really does a good job that way. It has electronic gates that keep it confined to the area you want. In some areas our floor plan is so open, that I use the electronic gates and some physical barriers as well, but it works. As someone said above, if it dies we WILL spend the money for another. It was a great with the dog hair when we had our dog - he was a major shedder.

3 dogs and we love ours, we've had it fo 3 years. We run it on the hardwoods in the main living area/kitchen and it's probably 1100 sq ft. It cleans good and does go over rugs. I have the dining room blocked off bc I don't want it to go over that rug

I have the Roomba 880, one of the intermediate models. It's quite expensive but having owned many roombas over the years I thought they were well worth the investment. We have hardwood floors and I only mop it about once a month. The sweeping is all done by the Roomba. It definitely covers more than 300 ft on one charge. The only annoying thing I find is picking up items off the floor so the Roomba can clean.

I have the Roomba D80 and I love it. Our downstairs (about 1600+ sq feet) is all hardwood with a few scatter rugs and we have 3 dogs, 1 cat. It does a great job. When I start it up, it does ¾ of the downstairs, and then goes back to recharge. I clean out the filter and then in about an hour it starts back out and less than 30 minutes it is done. The places it can't get, like under the sofa, etc, I run a duster under first so that the dust is out in the floor for it to pick up. I also put the dining room chairs upside down on the table. It goes much faster if it doesn't have to go around all those chair legs. My house feels so clean after I use it. The best Christmas present I ever got.

We have an ILIFE and a 1600 sq ft house, all of it is hardwood and I absolutely LOVE it! I think it does just a good a job as the Roomba for a whole lot less money. The only thing I do is pick up the small scatter rugs I keep in front to the bathroom sinks, otherwise the ILIFE will get caught up on them.

I have an older model Roomba and love it for all floor surfaces. When I needed to replace the battery, I looked for info online and found out there is a whole wealth of information on diy repairs and that MANYof the parts cam be replaced. I've had it for about 5 years, and the only issue I've had was eventually needing a new battery. You can get them refurbished, which is a great way to save some money.
Also for hardwood, you might be interested in the Braava, which is from the same company. It's considerably less expensive than the Roomba. I got mine on a lightning deal from Amazon for $200. It uses either Swiffer dry/wet cleaning cloths or the reusable terry cloth type cloths. So it sweeps and mops, but doesn't vacuum. The vacuum is probably better for pet hair, but I love it on the kitchen tile.

It does have a hard time with thin throw rugs, the kind with no rubber backing. I would think it would have issues with a rug with tassels on the ends depending on the length of the tassels.

I love my Roomba! If it died tomorrow I'd be Amazon Priming a new one. I have a Weimaraner that sheds like crazy and run my Roomba every other day. I have the base model... the $400 one, I'm. It sure what the more expensive models do different but this model does a great job, so I'm good. If you're concerned about the square footage, section off the rooms and let it charge in between.
