Just curious, which way do you like multi color highlights. Evenly spaced like the first pic, or more of a scattered look?

Definitely the second one, I hate that stripy look of the first.

More scattered, definitely, and I don't like them that chunky. That feels dated, to me.

More scattered. The second is best but not really my style and looks a little tacky, imo. I would prefer more realistic hair color and highlights that are more similar to the other hair color. I realize others have different opinions, though.

I'm doing the three colors like the first pic, just don't want them so "perfectly placed"

Neither!! I usually do 2 colors, and thinly spaced. I don't like chunky or even. I want it to look realistic. Like it's my real hair....

I don't like either
The first one is stripey and unnatural to me. I like the colors and tones. Maybe if the hair was less straight it would blend more. I like blended highlights.
The second one is too many to be 'highlights' the contrast is too much for me and that tone can look gray as it settles in. The second one would look great with a warmer tone I think.
But I'm not a hairstylist so take all that with a huge grain of salt.

Neither. Both of the pics are tacky and dated.

Number 2 for sure. I don't like the striped look.

Number 2, but with a much more subtle color of highlight and fewer of them. My hairdresser does a balayage thing where they're kind of painted on randomly. I like it.

Those who think they are tacky, what do you consider nice looking highlights. I love the look of the 3 colors. I also like colored hair (pink, blue) on some people..not myself personally...

None of those. They all look skunky. Blended highlights look best. Look at painted on color that's blended.

I'm not a hairstylist and have naturally red hair that has only been colored a few times so I may not know what I'm talking about. But when I look at the first photo in the Op, not only is the striping horrible but I think the red would fade at a much different pace than the rest. And that might turn out to look really bad, depending how it faded.

The second one could be ok but the white is too white and needs a toner to warm it up. OP - I think your hair is an auburn tone from your pic? If so you might go with some lowlights a few shades darker than your current color, as well as highlights a few shades light, so that you get contrast.

I realize others have different opinions, though. Ugh, I'm with you and twice this past year my stylist has given me the dated chunky look. What is so hard to understand about highlight, one shade lighter then my natural color, lowlight, one shade darker then my natural color. NOT blond and dark because YOU think it adds more depth!

I don't like either. The striped one is awful. Both are over done and harsh that can make you look older than you are. I think subtle, blended highlights look the the best. You don't want your hair to look processed.

I love them as well but with my hair color don't think it would work. me neither... blonde over here. i have always envied people with darker hair since i think they have more options... but perhaps just a case of "grass is always greener".

I definitely prefer the more scattered look in the second picture. I sometimes get 3 colours in my hair, and they are pretty much the 3 colours in the first pic! To be honest, when I do that my hair looks a bit more like the first pic (not quite as obviously stripey though) rather than the second. My mum asked me one time why I got tiger stripes in my hair!

Neither of the two options appeals to me, since I prefer more blended/natural, less obviously color-treated, highlights.
