Tarek and Christina, who have had a recently very public break-up - why does HGTV keep running their commercial about the Holidays, and it's just "all about being together and spending time together"? Also, for several days last week, it was almost a marathon of Flip or Flop - I kept turning on HGTV while I was cooking, wrapping gifts, etc - and it seemed that their show was almost the only thing playing. I like their show fine - but with this recent publicity of their breakup, it's hard to watch them talking about being such a happy family during the holidays. First world problem, for sure!

I have to agree with you. Just so super hypocritical when the rest of the press is running articles on their breakup, he's dating the nanny, she's dating a contractor, etc. I think this is truly the fakest "fake" show I have ever seen on HGTV.

The deal is, tv programming and advertising is set months in advance and it isn't just changed on a short notice later. Whoever bought that ad space, paid for it, will have to bear the expenses of reshooting the ad. They aren't likely to do that. They will just go with the ad that was shot until the holidays are over and the next ad campaign kicks into place.

I agree but it's no different than people "faking" a happy existence (the perfect life) on social media and then finding out later that they are splitting up.

But I think the OP is talking about HGTV's own commercial for the show. They could easily run an older commercial for the show, or just switch it to a commercial for one of their other shows. There are other holiday HGTV ads being run right now. Maybe it's HGTV's way of telling us that the show will go on, even with T and C's breakup.

My husband and I made that same comment this weekend. It just seemed tacky in light of what has been publicly said. I feel so bad for the little girl whenever she smiles in those commercials. I believe the line is "being with family" is Christina's favorite thing at the holidays and now it makes me want to watch the show less than I already did.

So much of the "family" brand is just that - a brand. It's a word people toss around to cement their credentials as "good people" and much of it is just a scam designed to lure people to the brand using it.
It's good to be reminded of that every time we see these commercials about what good "family" people they are and how much they care about "family" while we now know what's been going on behind the cameras.
Family is the people who make you feel valued and loved and respected. Family often has nothing to do w/blood relationships and nothing at all to do w/selling product.

I agree, the ad for the holidays was set up and taped months ago...now were they faking it back when they taped it, could be. I think I read they split in May so they flew under the radar with that for quite some time. I agree but it's no different than people "faking" a happy existence (the perfect life) on social media and then finding out later that they are splitting up. Completely agree with this statement also, there are so many people out there "faking it." My dd refers to Facebook as fakebook! Most times you really don't have any idea what is going on with people, as much as you think you might.

oh, I totally know what you mean! we watched an episode the other night where she was pregnant, and I just couldn't quite feel the same way about it. Knowing what I know now, about him later firing the nanny so that he could date her, and about her dating a contractor, and everything...

Totally agree. Those commercials need to go away. I had already tired of the show but these commercials are uncomfortable to watch. I am also sick of Fixer Upper... My sister is currently flipping her fifth house...says the shows are not realistic at all. On Fixer Upper, none of the furniture stays unless you buy it from her.

MONEY. money money money. if their show makes money for HGTV , the network will peddle whatever commercial or promo they need to in order to sell advertising for that show. if they think that showing the El Mopussas as a happy couple will bring in more viewership, they will do it. HGTV does not exist to live up to anyone's moral code. they are in it for the money. once FLIP OR FLOP is no longer a money maker, they will get rid of the show like so many previously loved shows on the network. me, I don't like FOF so I wouldn't care if it disappeared off their programming.

It is part of the home staging...showing the homeowner what their new home could look like.
If I had a home done from them I would want some of my own items mixed in with some of hers.
I think they do beautiful work and love just about every home they do.
In my opinion it's a great show.

I expect there's a business reason the couple announced their separation, after managing to keep it secret for six months & while the holiday commercial (in which they seemed less awkward than any of the episodes snippets I've seen) is airing. Perhaps HGTV just learned of the split, Christina/her alleged contractor boyfriend pitched a new show, or another scenario that prompted their public revelation. As a viewer, my hope is the Flip or Flop time slot is replaced with a quality past-programming-inspired decorating show. Best wishes to the couple & their children!

I wish we would all stop watching fake-y curated "family" crap that exists primarily to remind people how not-cool not-hip not-trendy not-hot not-together they are. When we do this, we'll all be a lot better off (IMO).

I always fast forward through all the unnecessary blather and get to the before and the afters. Everything else in the middle is just fluff, which mostly I find annoying because its always the same plot line.

That's what I was going to say in a nutshell.. at this point you can't really change all your programming until it runs it's time. (I would say if something really tragic happens they could change the line-up, but in TV world I am sure this isn't considered tragic, it's considered big bucks)

I just haven't gotten around to taking it off the que but I will.

YOU may have discussed this before, but I'd never heard that this is how it works and I would wager nor do most viewers. It's slimy to present the finished home w/all that product and never once mention that the woman is basically making money on the show and then trying to make more money selling product to the owners w/o ever mentioning that to the audience - many of whom are left w/the impression that the furnishing are part of the "makeover" - I sure was. I'm glad I know now that 's it's just another way for the couple to make money, but it would have been far less slimy for HGTV to be honest about that up front.

But the viewers aren't the ones buying the house. We're there for the makeover. The furniture makes the makeover look it's best. We're not being shortchanged anything by the fact that the home owners don't keep it. The home owners know from the very first that the furniture isn't included. It's part of the contract and it's explained very well to them how the show works. I'm having a hard time seeing why any viewer needs to take this arrangement personally.

Everything else in the middle is just fluff, which mostly I find annoying because its always the same plot line. That's how I watch every HGTV show. Love it or List it is the worst! I can watch it in record time. I miss the old shows where they gave more explanations of what they were actually doing and naming the products, explaining the design process... I didn't give much thought to Tarek's? and Christina's relationship. I thought they were both a little awkward on camera. I was personally fine with less lovey stuff on the show. I wanted to see the makeover.

Frankly, for me, her decor work is the only thing that makes that show different than any other. Or an improvement over any work I've done myself for that matter. Part of the shtick of the show is the budget and sticking to it. So, to me, the big reveal should only show what the budget and owner paid for. Otherwise, it's window dressing to cover the fact that all they could actually do was replace the flooring and fixture and knock down a few walls. It's like buying something in real life: if I tell a salesperson my budget, I expect them to show me things within or near that mark. Not something that will need heaps more additional purchases to look that good. Don't show me a car with everything I want but say the wheels are extra and don't sell me a dress but make me pay extra for a zipper. Yes, I understand that wheels and a zipper are more important to the end product than some would say her decor is, but I don't see it that way. Without her bobbles, those rooms aren't worth televising.

I knew about the furnishing and not every thing is from magnolia, although much of it is now. When you look at the staging there is sometimes a price tag still on it or if you watch a marathon you'll see some of the pieces being reused. I don't have a problem with it.
