DH applied for disability this past summer and we received word that he was approved.
Back story: He was severely burned as a small child and has had ongoing issues with his right leg through his life. Although his last job was a "desk job" he had issues with pain, arthritis, and infections in his legs since his injury. Last year he decided to retire early due to his health and, as a result, received reduced Social Security retirement benefits.
Although I am still working, with our reduced income we were just making it (no complaints, we have what we need right now). We know that he will eventually have to have the leg amputated, and we were at a loss as to how we were going to be able to afford to modify our home to accommodate his needs when the time comes.
But now, the disability payment he receives will equal what he would have received if he had retired "on time" and we will be able to bank the money to be able to finance the modifications that we will eventually have to make. It is truly a blessing to us and a huge relief!

What you face seems so hard, but will be so much easier with the disability money. Great news!

I am glad it came through for him. Also, if he's not already Medicare eligible, he will be eligible after two years from the date he filed.

I am so glad! I am still 22 months into this nightmare. Will he get back pay from when he applied? I hope so. I am not sure how it all works even though I am in the process. It's so stressful. I hope you both can relax a bit now.

Also check with your State etc to see if they would help finance the renovations. Here in Alberta we have Aids to Daily Living that can help with wheel chairs, modifications in the home etc

wow, that must be such a huge weight off of your shoulders! I'm very glad for you, this is what disability was meant for, not all those cheats who bilk the system you always hear of. Have a wonderful Merry Christmas, New Year, holiday now!
