Did you try something new this year? How about all of you making AKathy's caramels? A tip or recipe you'd like to share? I tried a new peanut brittle recipe on a whim. Microwave Peanut Brittle It is surprisingly good. I rarely use the microwave so I don't often try microwave recipes. This was super easy and has good flavor. It makes a nice thick brittle. I'll be replacing my regular recipe with this one in the future.

That sounds good! I made simply apple rose tarts- they are not as pretty as the website- but I needed to try one before I bring them to my sister and BIL's tonite- just in case they were horrible-- really yummy! Like a mini apple pie but in a puff pastry! www.simplyorangejuice.com/recipes/rose-tarts

I made an Italian pear cake, my DH made a marzipan partridge to put on top. Can't wait to try it.

I ordered pretty colored foil squares with the intentions of making the caramels, but haven't gotten to it yet. The brittle and the roses look interesting. I've marked both of them for trying out later.

To keep it simple, tried the pretzals but with Hershey's kisses instead of rolos--kisses were an epic fail!

I tried a new rolled sugar cookie recipe and it was a disaster. The cookies spread and turned into a terrible mess.

My first batch of Mexican Wedding Cakes turned out flat. They only thing I can think of is that I didn't ad enough flour. On the plus side, they were a delicious crsipy cookie.

It took 3 tries to make peppermint bark. The first time the brown chocolate and white chocolate wouldn't stick to each other. The 2nd try the white chocolate melted then immediately turned into a giant blob. Attempt #3 worked out, there was not going to be a an attempt #4 (DH was taking this stuff to a potluck at work).

My family has plowed through the four different kinds of cookies I already made. DH is marathon training and has been doing 18- and 20-mile runs, and will come home and eat a dozen cookies "because he can." Stinker. Chocolate crinkles, lemon thumbprints, iced sugar cookies and ginger snaps were all big hits. Today I'm making America's Test Kitchen's Rich Chocolate Tart for tomorrow's dessert, and their Anytime Banana Pecan Muffins for tomorrow's breakfast, because the recipe promised I could make the batter ahead of time and bake it tomorrow morning, which is what I plan to do. The tart is a little more complicated than stuff I usually make - wish me luck!

I made these late last night. Rice Krispie BuckeyesGot the PB, butter and sugar mixed when I saw that I had purchased vanilla Rice Krispies. No big deal. Then I realised I didn't have any semi-sweet chips so I had to attempt to sweeten squares of unsweetened chocolate. It was 11pm when I finally finished. Thank goodness they actually taste good.

I made chocolate creme brûlée and it got good reviews. I'm not a big chocolate person so I haven't tried it.

I made 5 new cookie recipes. One was coconut macaroons. Three dozen turned out perfect. Went to make another 3 and ran out of coconut, so added some peppermint. I guess that was to much sugar. It turned out to be runny, coconut goo. But my DH and boys love it. So even though it tastes good, not being included in the cookies we are giving away.

I made a akathy's caramels and they're super delicious but very firm, I might try again and heat them to a lower temp, I stopped around 250 but they're still very hard to cut and you need to keep them in your mouth for a while til they soften. I did discover if you heat the knife under the faucet and dry it then spray it with coconut oil or Pam you can cut a few strips off much easier. I can't decide whether to make more caramels or to make honey comb candy, the kind that's like crunchie or violet crumble. I was going to try to flavor the caramels with Irish cream but dh finished the bottle with some hot cocoa, and I don't want to go to Costco on Christmas eve!

My goal for 2016 was to make the perfect pie crust. Sadly, another failure is currently in the oven. Everyone says my pie tastes fine, but the crust needs work. IMHO, the crust is still ugly. I used Vodka per America's Test Kitchen, but I can't get my crust to roll out long enough to nicely cover the apples. Plus, I have a heck of a time getting it neatly off of the dough board and onto the pie pan. I use a lot of flour and try not to play w/the crust. ARGH.
I think I'll make some cookies so that I feel better about myself. I bake a white chocolate raspberry cookie that seems to be a hit.

My back is a fail...i'm about halfway done baking cookies and my back wants to be done. It has dawned on me that making something like I pie that you can put together the ingredients then bake would be less time consuming than watching cookies bake

DD got a cupcake maker from my parents for an early Christmas present so we made these vanilla cupcakes (they turned out almost perfect--just stuck to the wrapper a bit). Then she wanted to make a peppermint frosting to go with it so we made this and it just didn't quite taste the way we both felt it should. OK, but not quite as delicious as we'd hoped. I also made some Salted Caramel Chocolate Fudge to send to a friend. We sampled a few bites and it came out quite well (considering I forgot to add the vanilla-whoops!). We also made some peanut butter blossoms using this recipe, and it was one of the best batches we've had. We had to tweak a few things with the cooling times but she had some great tips on how to make them look and taste great.

Nothing smells like failure quite like burnt sugar. First batch of English Toffee was a fail. Second batch was perfect so I'm hoarding it like gold. Cupcakes, truffles (choc rum, choc mint Baileys and peanut butter) were all perfect. The easy caramels turn out every year but this year were a dud. Candy can be temperamental!

Despite the somewhat complicated directions for the crust, it seems to have turned out OK. The whole thing is in the fridge and looks good! I envy those of you who make candy - I've tried my mom's peanut brittle once or twice in the past, but we're having a humid Christmas this year and I know it wouldn't turn out, so I didn't even bother. Same with the caramel corn. Humidity and candy do not go together.

To those of you with failures, I'm liking your posts in sympathy. Nothing like spending time and money in the kitchen only to have it flop! 😠As long as the flop is due to how it looks and not how it tastes, it doesn't go to waste, right? During all the years that I helped my mom make all the cookies for her many gift trays, the only cookies I got to eat were the "uglies" and the misshapen end pieces. Any good looking pieces went on someone's tray. I used to hope she flubbed up on a few just so I could eat them. Unfortunately, Mom had been baking these same recipes for so many years that she hardly ever had any overcooked, lopsided, or broken cookies. Tomorrow is the first Christmas without her, and I'm sure her cookie trays will be missed by every banker, hairdresser, dentist office staff, doctor's office staff, and whoever was fortunate enough to make it onto her list of recipients. I sure miss helping her bake and fix up the trays. Delivery day was a lot of fun too.

We made cherry cheesecake cookies and ran out of cherry with another 3 cookies worth of dough left. We thought it would be brilliant to put a couple of rolos on them...The little boys that were here for dinner called them elf poop cookies. Kind of a win/fail...They thought it was hysterical.

I made up a new flavor of fudge this year: mojito. It came out great. The chocolate orange has been pretty popular as well.
I haven't done much baking. With eight batches of fudge in the house i figured we didn't need more sugar.

Did you test your candy thermometer to make sure it's registering the right temp? Even being a few degrees off can make a big difference with this stuff. I usually take mine off the heat at about 242 degrees because I really don't like them that hard!
