Why do we have the same dreams over and over, sometimes for many years? In my case, I have four recurring dreams. Three of them are happy, and I always wake up smiling. The first is that I find extra rooms in my house that I never knew were there. They're usually big, shady and dusty. The second is probably common to many people; I can fly really easily, just by concentrating enough. I spend all night swooping through green valleys. The third has me shopping in Century 21 in NYC, and finding lots of bargain Swatches and handbags! The stressful dream always involves me driving at speed, but in reverse, and the brakes never work. I've dreamt each of these so many times, that I still remember many many details. They puzzle me - why do they keep coming back? Do they connect with issues in my life? If so, these issues must have been around a long time! What recurring dreams do you have?

My flying dreams involve close-call navigating of power lines, and trying to haul people while I fly, which makes me fly low and laboriously. The flying dreams also often involve showing people 'look! I can fly!' and the people not being that impressed.
I've had the 'no brakes on the car' dreams too. Do you push and push on the brake in your dreams, trying to get it to work?
My mom has the extra rooms in her house dreams.
I have 'stuff stuck in my teeth' dreams that reoccur. Never-ending strands of dental floss that I pull out, hand-over-fist, and stiff chewing gum that's lodged in and impossible to pull out completely.
Sometimes stressful dreams seem to reflect my current life, but usually they seem random.
The first night after I had a miscarriage, I dreamed that flowers were coming up through snow-covered ground, and I was upset that it was too early for them to survive. That's the most symbolic dream I recall having.

I have the extra rooms dream too. I've had it for 30 years. Sometimes it's my home, sometimes I'm moving to a new home, sometimes it's my grandmother's home. The rooms are usually filled with something that I would enjoy-rocking chairs, fire places, yarn, books, baby furniture. Only once did this dream turn ugly, when my grandfather came to me in it (he died in 1970 when I was 7 years old) and told me that I was being selfish and needed to share everything with family members who I had never met. He was quite angry with me, and wanted me to leave.
I documented them for a while to see if I could gain any insight, but nothing turned up, and I got bored with the experiment.

I don't recall ever having a dream of flying. One of my reoccurring themes has been automobile out of control, usually going backwards over a cliff or something similar.

I've had recurring dreams also. One that I found really weird/unpleasant and one pleasant I googled "what dreams mean" or whatever and found what made sense in my instance and I never had the dreams again. It was kind of like once I figured out what my subconscious was trying to tell me, it did not need to anymore. I miss the pleasant one.

Ever since I graduated from college, I've had a dream occasionally that I'm late for a final for a class that I'm going to fail unless I get an A on the final. The building is always the same, but it looks like a high school, not a college building. I'm always late and always have problems getting to the classroom. Um, did I mention that I graduated 24 years ago? Think it's time for me to get over this one.
The other one I've had a lot (although now that I think of it, not recently) is about a house that we're looking at or living in; it varies each time I have it. It's a HUGE house, very difficult to describe. The strangest thing is that years ago we went to an open house and one of the hallways was EXACTLY like what I've seen in this dream. Totally freaked me out at the time. The rest of the house was completely different, though.
I think I need therapy... LOL!

This extra rooms thingy seems to be a common one. I often dream along those lines, but it is my childhood home, not my present one.
I also dream about the library I used to go to when I was a child too.
Another one which crops up is the loss of a tooth. Always my lower right canine. Weird.

I have a recurring dream where my DH is kissing another woman. I just get so floored that he does it brazenly right in front of me like to throw it in my face. He would never, ever do such a thing.
And then I have a recurring dream that I'm still married to exhusband and my current DH is trying to convince me that I'm really married to him and I'm not believing him.

She mentioned it in passing one time while we were at my grandmother's house, and my grandmother looked at her and said "don't you remember??" Apparently, when she was really little, she and my grandmother witnessed a plane crash. We think that my mom was so young that she didn't really understand what she saw and it was her subconscious's way of trying to put the crash in some kind of order. After that conversation, she never had the dream again.

My repeating dreams involve an old house and frightens me. The other is one where I can't get where I'm going, making all the wrong turns and choices.

Ever since I tried snorkeling (when I was on my honeymoon 19 years ago) I LOVE it. Adore it. Can't get enough of it. I've always loved the sea and swim like a fish. I don't just float on top of the water but take deep breaths and dive deep down, swimming around exploring and adoring the sea life. My problem-not enough vacation time. I've only been on 3 vacations where I could snorkel, but they've been far in between in 19 years. Most of it is DH's work schedule. Haven't been in about 10 years.
So here's my recurring dream. We're at a tropical location and it's the very last day. Something has happened (like it's rained every day we've been there) and I haven't been able to snorkel and I've only got 2 hours before the plane leaves. So I try and do everything I can to get to the beach and get in the water. This dream occurs over and over.
Last dream it was an indoor pool like aquarium, and there were two injured, practically dead people on the bottom that the rescue divers were trying to save. I didn't care. I dove in anyway just so I could see my fishies. Hey, it was a dream. I'm not responsible for acting like a jerk in a dream.
I know we need a vacation BAD! Had a trip planned to Hawaii before DH got this last job. It's an 18 month contract with no vacation days. After I told DH this last dream he said I might have to go on a quick trip on my own. I wouldn't feel right though, but I am thinking about it. Have to save up some money first though.

Wow, I didn't realize I was having extra room dreams at all. But after reading the posts, I realize I have those dreams frequently where I keep finding rooms. What does this dream mean? Guess they never made enough of an impact that I even remembered having them. Or I moved on to a more memorable/scary dream.
I used to have the naked dream. Probably a traumatic memory b/c in middle school home econmics, they had little curtained rings where they made you change clothes IN class. And the year I was in home ec, we had boys in our class. Had that one for a really really long time. Only it was in my high school instead of middle school. That is rare anymore.
I had the forgetting to take one final so I didn't graduate from college dream. And it was in my high school not my college. I can't remember the last time I had that one but it's been a while.
I frequently still have the falling or car out of control/no brakes dream. Probably a refletion of feeling my life is out of control.

I have these same recurring dreams as mentioned above:
I can fly, but I do it by running and flapping my arms. The brakes on my car won't work. I haven't gone to classes all year and it's finals and I don't know why I haven't been going to class! It's horrible. My other school one is the one where I can't find my locker or else I lost my schedule and don't know where my class is. One time I dreamed that the hallway to get to my next class was full of zombies. That was different.
I also have the dreams about extra rooms in my house, but one time I dreamed I had an entire wing that I didn't know about. I am always disappointed when I wake up and realize where I do live. LOL!

I have a recurring nightmare that we adopted new pets - small ones like hamsters or birds - and that I forget to take care of them. I wake up in a panic knowing that when I go in the room where I left them months ago, I will find their emaciated remains.
I have this dream several times a week and usually wake up standing in the hall outside my bedroom, heart pounding and utterly confused.

I had no idea so many people had the extra rooms dream! It's fascinating. I too, am disappointed when I wake up, and it's just my regular old house again. I especially like when it's a bathroom that I find. It has a fireplace, walk in shower with stone walls, jacuzzi tub and shelf after shelf of bath salts, lotions, etc.

I have two. One that I enjoy and one that I don't.
The one I enjoy is the one many people have already mentioned about finding really cool "extra" rooms in a house that I never knew were there. We moved several times when I was young and many times the houses I dream of are ones I lived in as a kid. I'm always disappointed when I wake from these! I looked up the meaning of these sorts of dreams once. If I remember correctly it symbolizes unlocking your hidden potential and the anticipation of something new and exciting happening in your life.
The one I don't enjoy is one where all of my teeth are falling out and I can spit handfuls of them out into my hands. This one freaks me out!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who dreams about extra rooms.
Here's one interpretation that I found:
"To dream that you find or discover a new room suggests that you are developing new strengths and taking on new roles. You may be growing emotionally. Consider what you find in the discovered room as it may indicate repressed memories, fears, or rejected emotions. Alternatively, such rooms are symbolic of neglected skills or rejected potential."
Interesting.

I have had a variation of one frequently, for a few years now. I'm in my car, on a busy road- like a highway, but the roads often go straight up. Not a gradual 'up' like a hill- straight UP. I think it's insanity- cars are not meant to drive like that. But there is no other option, and I see tons of cars around me doing fine, like it's no big deal. There are always people in the car with me, and they do not seem worried or alarmed either. I am petrified that my car is going to fall off the road and just flip right over backwards into space. And then it does. I wake up before I hit the ground, but my heart is always racing and I'm scared out of my wits.

I had that flying dream as a very small child and up into my preteen years. I could never get down as hard as I tried. I just kept flying faster and faster over unknown places. When I was about 12 that dream stopped.
Now most of the time my dreams are scary. Sometimes I wake up with my heart pounding. Sometimes I'm just scared. Most of the time I don't remember what scared or terrified me. Probably a good thing.
I would just like to have a few nights of no dreaming at all.

I have the extra room dream also, and sometimes the extra room is from my grandmother's house and she is there. For several years after I divorced [HASH]2, I would dream that we were back together and I'd be asking myself, "Why did I do this? I was happy without him," and then I'd wake up and realize I was still single and be SOOOOOOOO relieved. My 3rd one is easier to interpret: I'd be running all over a building trying to find a bathroom and they would all have the doors off, or the toilets would be unusable, and when I'd wake up, guess what - I needed to go to the bathroom. Guess my dream was a way of keeping me from wetting the bed.

I've had the many rooms dreams- just last week, I think. Sometimes it's a house I've lived in, sometimes not. I always get stressed about how much more space I'll have to clean.
Last week I dreamed I was floating around inside a mall, while holding onto a balloon- just floating up and down- it was fun!
I used to have creepy teeth dreams fairly often- I look in the mirror and see that I have rows and rows of little baby teeth. It would always creep me out! More often, I dream that one or two of my teeth are loose and/or falling out. I'm sure I'm awake and it's really happening this time, but when I finally do wake up, it's all good.
I really hate the "Inception" type of dreams where I dream that I wake up. I move my hands and do all sorts of things to prove to myself that I really am awake, only to really wake up a little later. Or when I dream that I'm struggling to wake up but can't.
It always amazes how long some dreams seem, only to wake up and find out I've been dozing for just 10 minutes!

My dream involves college. It seems like I've had it thousands of times. I enroll in a class and then forget to go the entire semester...until it's final exam time, and then I suddenly remember and am in a panic that I missed all the classes & previous tests and that I'm going to totally screw up my GPA. And I can never find the professor to explain. You'd think I'd realize in my dream that I've had this dream before. But nope. Same story, same panic!

I have some of the same recurring dreams as the rest of you.
.... I am driving my car and the brakes do not work - I pump hard on the brakes but cannot get the car to stop. .... I am jumping on a trampoline and going so high I can see the whole neighborhood - I am terrified that I will miss the trampoline and land splat on the ground! .... I am packing to go somewhere and I can't find everything I need. It's taking me so long to pack that I am going to miss my flight. .... I am running to the train station and I have to buy a ticket. The train is coming in but the ticket machine isn't working or the person in front of my is taking too long. I'm about to miss the train. .... I go hunting through my hand bag to find my secret stash of cigarettes and go outside to smoke one. This is a strange one because I gave up smoking a gazillion years ago.
I also have a lot of violent dreams. Each time someone dies, but not always the same way. Sometimes is is by shooting, by stabbing, an axe through the head etc etc. 3 nights ago I had one that a 4 year old boy was shot in the chest 3 times by masked gunmen. I quickly called the ambulance and for some reason his parents grabbed him and put him in their convertible to drive him around the neighborhood. I was worried that (a) the gunmen would shoot him again, and (b) he would bleed to death. When the ambulance arrived we had to try and find the little boy. So weird.

GrammyJ's post reminded me that I also have the one where I need to use the bathroom and can't find one that isn't stopped up or otherwise filthy, etc. Sometimes in those dreams I just sit in a chair and pee. I am always horrified by that when I wake up. I haven't stopped to notice, but I imagine that I need to pee when I get up and it is just from that, too, but holy cow. What a weird thing to dream!!
when I was younger I had a nightmare several times and it scared me every time. There was a scarecrow hanging outside the kitchen window (it may have been in a field, I can't remember) and while I was looking at it, the scarecrow drew its index finger across its throat while looking at me. I always woke up with my heart pounding.
Sometimes I have what I think may be night terrors or something, I don't really know. I will be lying in bed and think that I feel someone sit down on the bed or lie on it, etc, but there is nobody there. I will try desperately to wake myself up, and do everything I can to will my body to move, but I am paralyzed. Those are extremely frightening when they happen. I don't think I ever had these when I was a kid, but they happen to me now. I am always scared that someone has broken in and is going to hurt me or something.

I used to have the extra rooms dream when I was really young. The specific details are sort of fuzzy because I haven't had the dream in years, but at one point I had it quite often.
My other reoccurring dreams involve:
-suddenly realizing that I'm still on the local Walmart's employee work schedule...even though I haven't worked there in over 14 years (when I was in college).
-being separated from dh and not being able to remember his phone number to try and call him.
-losing all my teeth
