Check the history or photo board for the free 2 Peas Photo Class. Practice, practice and practice is the only other tip I can think of. I don't think you need a cd, can't you just transfer the photos from your SD card? I have never used a CD to transfer photo s before. If you do need the cd, I imagine that the program would be downloaded from the Canon site. Do you need lens suggestions? The 50 1.8 is inexpensive and a good starting lens.

You shouldn't need the canon cd to download pictures. There is a cord that can connect directly from your camera j to your computers USB port. Or better yet, buy a card reader that you pop your SD card into that plugs into your USB port. Then you can open your picture files from the sd card and drag and drop them into a folder on your desktop.
Enjoy your new toy!

He did get me a lense too, it's not in front of me so will have to see what it is. Could I transfer with USB cord too?

The 2 laptops I have are old are unreliable. My husband has a new 17" tablet and I think I may be the reader and attach to that.

I would recommend buying an external hard drive to store your pictures on. I'm not sure how much memory your tablet has, but I know I would have mine full of pictures in just a couple of days!

Yea good idea. I do love to take photos, and my phone takes decent...but this is so much better. Especially things like full moon, sunrise/set pics, etc which I love to take !

It is best to use a card reader, I think using the USB drains the battery like crazy.

So one of my laptops has a card slot...but when I put the SD card in the pics I took on Xmas aren't showing up. Think it could be that the laptop is pretty old and out of date? I did Google and saw something about a switch on the SD card and I changed that... Will go buy a reader tomorriw to try it on a newer computer. Wish I could post all my Xmas pics! Lol

check the format of the photo files the previous owner might have set it to 'raw' you'd only see those in photoshop or lightroom
you can tether your camera to the computer with a usb or you can use a card reader - either plugged into the usb slot or if the system has one integrated
enjoy

if you want the canon software you can download it from their website right here - at canon.comyou don't need the software but it might make things easier for you to navigate when you tether/insert sd card - your computer sees it as an external hard drive all you have to do it drag them from that location to your computer (i use the desktop as the first stop) gina

The newest device we have is my husbands 17" tablet. Thinking I'll get a reader and see if I can move there..

Are you using a card that says "SDHC"? If so, it could be that your older laptop doesn't recognize the HC part of the card. My old computer was the same way, so I had to get a card reader. Did you try the card on your husband's pc?

I download my photos using a card reader rather than the software that the camera comes with. It is better to use a card reader - it is quicker, it doesn't drain the camera battery, and I also read somewhere once that it is better for the internal mechanics of the camera, not as much wear and tear (I can't remember the exact reason).
If I'm downloading to my laptop I put the card into the slot on the laptop and download that way.
The only thing to be wary of is bending the pins on the card when you take the card in and out of the reader. It's never happened to me though, and I've been doing it that way for many years.
