I recently finished watching two radically different shows... one on Netflix and one on Amazon Prime both of which I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend if you're looking for something new to watch over holiday break.
The Netflix show is "Travelers." It's a sci-fi television series starring Eric McCormick as a time traveler who, along with 4 other "travelers", comes back to our time to stop events that have led to earths near destruction. When I say they come back it's actually that their consciousness enters the body of someone about to die here in our time. Sounds like another corny sci-fi premise but it's very well done and the characters are diverse and well written. I've finished all 12 episodes and hate that the next season won't be out for another year. I understand that it's still currently playing on Canadian television so perhaps some of our Canadian peeps might voice their opinion on it.
The other show is on Prime and is an Irish offering called "Red Rock." It's a crime/character-driven drama done in a half hour format, something we haven't seen here in the States. Without commercials each episode is only about 21 minutes long. It's different but the format really works well. On the show, Red Rock is a neighborhood of Dublin and the show centers around a Red Rock garda station and the officers who work there, as well as their families, and the cases they work on. As I told my daughter, once you start watching it's hard not to click onto the next episode... the proverbial "bet you can't eat just one." If I'm remembering correctly there are about 80 episodes available to watch now. Such a good show and very well acted.
I'd love to hear what any of you think of either of these shows. Did you like them as well as I did?

I just finished binge watching "Travelers" this morning. I really liked a lot of it. I am not usually a Sci Fi person, but this one caught my attention.

We are watching 'Travelers' at present. DH ran across it. It is perfect for me. He's been grossed out a few times.
Instead of reading or being productive, I am watching Netflix and movies. So far, I have watched the first season of 'The White Queen' (looking forward to next season), finished the second season of 'The Man in the High Castle' (thoroughly confused, but still interested), and watching the second season of 'Outlander' on my own.

Thanks! I've added them to my list. I'm watching Trollhunters with my sons and we are really enjoying it. I also watched Unconditional on Netflix and was bawling my eyes out! But it was so good!

I just started watching Travelers last night and really enjoy it so far. I will check out Red Rock too.
I saw something on my Amazon Prime that looked interesting. It is called The Sniffer and this is the intro info:
They call him The Sniffer. He's the proud owner of an extraordinarily acute sense of smell. He can detect things about you that you desperately want to conceal. He'll find that needle in the haystack. Don't ever doubt his extraordinary skills! But the truth is that his sense of smell is as much a curse as it is a gift.
It sounded interesting. The guy works with police to help solve crimes. He has to wear nose blockers the majority of the time because his sense of smell is so acute. BUT, it is not in English. I get so irritated when I find something that looks interesting and then discover it is all in a foreign language, Russian in this case, because I cannot read and keep up with the show at the same time. I tried, but ended up frustrated. I wish they would some how mark those so I don't get interested before finding out it isn't in English.

We just finished Travelers last night. I was upset because I didn't realize it was BRAND new and I was hoping the next season would start soon.

Try The OA on Netflix. It's excellent. Strange but very good. Yes, I've watched this one too. (Can you tell I don't sleep well?) It is strange. Without giving anything away, in the end I wasn't sure what was real and what wasn't; what had really happened and what hadn't. I liked the beginning of it when she was in Russia. Such a beautiful little girl.

Thanks for the recommendations. Travelers showed up in my suggested shows list. I don't usually watch sci-fi but will give it a try since I powered through Marcella in a couple of days. It was confusing in parts as stories entwined and I still have questions after finishing the 8 part season. I didn't love the ending as not all the story lines were wrapped up. It will be interesting to see if those stories are part of the next season, but I kind of doubt they are. shaniam I finally finished all of Shameless. I think the first couple of seasons are the best, but the Gallagher family is a trainwreck you can't stop watching.

It has 8 total. Really, really like it.

I just watched the Colony and the second season of Man in the High Castle. Enjoyed both.
For more science-fi, the 100 is a good binge watch.

Not quite the same thing, but DD9 and I binge-watched Just Add Magic on Amazon recently, and it's actually a really good tween show. FAR better than the live-action laugh track crap on Disney. Nothing objectionable, either. It'd be fine for younger kids as well - they just might have a little harder time following the story. The basic theme is 3 girls who find a magical cookbook and use the recipes to try to solve various problems. While it's targeted at girls, there's a male secondary character, and boys interested in either magic or cooking might enjoy the show as well. For myself, I've really been enjoying The Crown on Netflix and was disappointed to find out I'd reached the end last night!

Okay, I have several of these now added to my list. Right now, my guilty pleasure is on Hulu, the ABC Series "Mistresses." It's awful and bad and so easy to watch mindlessly, which is what my brain has needed after the stress of the holidays. I hate to watch foreign movies with English subtitles. Even though I am used to watching closed captioning on my regular shows, I can still hear my language so that makes it different. I just don't watch subtitles from other languages. But I took a chance recently with the film (on Netflix) called "The African Doctor." And I throughly enjoyed the movie and will have to give others a chance when my dh wants to watch something with subtitle.s

Finished OA and really loved it. DS (27) asked me to wait and watch "Travelers" with him, so I'm waiting on that.
Started 3% last night and I'm pretty much into it. It's hit a bit of a lull and I'm not sure if I'll continue. I think I'll go a bit more and see how it goes.
I don't mind films or shows with subtitles at all. At first I used to a tiny bit but DS (who studied film in college) quickly cured me of that. After awhile I don't even realize I am reading the words. And I've always loved the German films because I used to speak German until I was 5 or 6 and we moved to the USA and I learned English. The teachers forbid my parents to speak German in the home so my sister and I could learn English faster and I've forgotten my German. Watching German movies gives me a chance to hear German again and I realize I know every 3rd word or so.
Anyway, there are some really great films and shows in other languages. My favorite movie is "The Royal Affair" and that is in Danish.
Back to the thread-thanks so much for the many suggestions. Lately Netflix has been short on films and heavy on shows. It's great to hear different viewpoints and suggestions for shows that are good.
